Babani's Kurdish Restaurant

Authentic Kurdish restaurant
544 Saint Peter St
Minneapolis, MN 55102
United States
+1 651 602 9964
Babani's claims to be the first authentic Kurdish restaurant in the United States. The unfamiliar menu items may keep some away, but once you try it, you will definitely come back. The richly aromatic cuisine is prepared using fresh vegetables and organic herbs and spices. The Kurdish chicken soup, dowjic ($3.50 cup/$6.50 bowl), and tabbouleh ($3.50/$6.25) are nicely complimented by naska nan wa paneer ($3.50/$6.95), an addicting, delicious house-baked bread. For those looking for a taste bud-tingling entrée, don't miss the kubay sawar ($11.75), ground beef stuffed in fried wheat dumplings, or chicken tawa, chicken layered with potato, green pepper, onion and dried lemon. Prices are reasonable and portions are enormous.

Birchwood Cafe

Appetizing, reasonably priced
3311 East 25th St
Minneapolis, MN 55406

Appetizing, reasonably priced and full of surprises, this cheerful neighborhood restaurant is an excellent place for breakfast, lunch or dinner. The atmosphere has an old-fashioned "take a load off and sit a spell" feel about it. The menu is on a blackboard as you enter, then place your order at the counter. The menu consists of mostly vegetarian and organic fare. Soup, salads, sandwiches, pasta and pizza are the mainstays. Desserts are too good to pass up, so save room. Juices, soft drinks and coffee are served.

Brother Hogan's

Hoagies, hoagies and more hoagies
56 Sixth St East
Minneapolis, MN 55101
United States
+1 651 293 0883
One of many skyway level eateries downtown, this is the place to go for sandwiches, where the breads and salads are always fresh and tasty. The special of the day includes a fresh hot or cold hoagie, with fillings of your choice and a cup or bowl of homemade soup. All of the soups are great (try the beer cheese, tortellini or tomato), or try the Texas Chili Salad, a huge bed of greens topped with cucumbers, carrots, cabbage, sprouts, tomatoes, onions, shredded cheese and green peppers and a spicy mound of Texas-style beef and bean chili. A selection of drinks is available. No eat-in tables are available.

Cafe Brenda

Serene & Stylish Getaway
300 1st Ave N
Minneapolis, MN 55401
United States
+1 612 342 9230

This cafe is a serene and stylish getaway for vegetarians and fish lovers. The high ceilings, floral carpeting and pale peach walls are nicely accented with green plants and comfortable seating. The restaurant features pleasant views of the Warehouse District. Owner and chef Brenda Langton's nouvelle cuisine showcases organic ingredients and eschews red meat in favor of chicken, freshwater fish and an occasional seafood selection. The idea of sugar-free desserts does not sound tasty but you are in for a surprise. The chocolate caramel tart is a superb ending to a delicious meal. Brenda's features an excellent selection of imported beers and wines.

Prairie Star Coffee

Break away from the urban bustle
2399 University Ave West
Minneapolis, MN 55114
United States
+1 651 646 7827
Not all coffeehouses are created equal. And the proof is right here. This coffeehouse has broken from the pack with its smoke-free environment and huge, art-adorned room. The seating is comfortable and plentiful inside and out. What makes it unique are the poetry readings and traveling minstrels performing throughout the year. Five different coffees are brewed daily and over two dozen teas are available. Iced coffee, iced tea, soft drinks and juice are also served. Baked goods are brought in fresh daily from Bon Appetit. Vegetable soups and sandwiches are served from mid-morning until closing.
