This place provides excellent batting practice and training for all ages. Lessons are $20 for an individual half-hour lesson, or you can get team and group specials. The place also sells a huge variety of baseball and softball equipment from all around the country. Also known as Mission Carmel Basilica and more formally, as Mission San Carlos Borromeo del Rio Carmelo, this was the second of the nine missions founded by Father Junipero Serra. The area was originally chosen for its agricultural possibilities in 1771, but the temperate climate and exquisite landscape soon made it Father Serra's favorite. Indeed, he is buried, as per his wishes, in front of the church's main altar. The building, which fell into ruins in the 19th century and has since been completely restored, exhibits classic Mission-style, fortress-like architecture, with thick, bougainvillea-covered adobe walls and a central courtyard. A Moorish-style bell tower contains nine bells and is open to the public. Though some may find the climb up the steep staircase taxing, the views from that vantage point are magnificent. Want to sail out from the Monterey Bay and explore the process of deep-sea fishing? If so, climb aboard one of Chris' boats. These are spectacular tours led by several experts in the field. All of the skippers have been fishing Monterey Bay for most of their lives. Several boats are available, each one being over 50 feet long. Cod trips are USD35; salmon USD45; and for USD125, you get an albacore trip, which includes live bait and lasts 12 hours. Children pay less and group rates are available. Enjoy a spectacular two-hour tour where you can see thousands of whales in the Monterey Bay. In the early part of the year, you can see the gray whales as they migrate to and from Alaska. Also in sight will be sea otters, sea lions, and many dolphins. The tours are guided by skilled skippers, each of whom have been doing this his or her entire life. Naturally the service is great, as you are accompanied by true experts in the field. It is an excellent adventure for the whole family. This is one of the best designed aquariums going. A unique feature is the two-story tank, home to a kelp forest in which swim sunfish, sharks, and the occasional diver tasked with squeegeeing the algae off the tank walls. Sand dabs are displayed in shelf-like tanks ideally suited to the flat fish, and a school of sardines swim in an endless circle in their cylindrical tank home. If you want to interact with some aquatic dwellers, you're invited to pet the bat rays (oddly velvet-like). The jellyfish display shows that they are like something from another planet. Since the mid-1980s, this place has been introducing people to the fun activity of kayaking, with the added bonus of educating the customers about the preservation of marine life in the Monterey area. The store sells and rents all sorts of kayaks and has a variety of classes. The staff members are all accomplished experts, and many corporate group programs are available. See the magic of Monterey Bay Harbor from a glass-bottom boat. You'll see otters, seals, and sea lions as you travel the gentle waters. The guides are extremely knowledgeable and the service is great. For a little more, you can take a longer sunset cruise, which takes you past Lover's Point and the lighthouse. One of the most scenic drives anywhere in the world, this stretch of highway runs between Pacific Grove and Carmel. You will see incredible beaches, six golf courses and more mansions than you can count. You will drive by several epicurean restaurants, all of which will refund the USD8 toll fee that you pay to drive this road. Pedestrians and cyclists can enter for free. The road snakes its way like a serpent, along the California coast and then through the Del Monte Forest. This drive is an absolute must for anyone visiting the Monterey Peninsula.
