Barnyard

A shopper's paradise
At the corner of Highway 1 and Carmel Valley Road
Monterey and Carmel, CA 93923
United States
+1 831 624 8886
For almost a quarter of a century this shopping center has been one of the best of its kind in all of California. With unique shops, galleries, salons, clothing stores and first-class restaurants, there is something here for every discerning shopper. The place is also surrounded by gorgeous gardens and brick walkways. You should not make a visit to Carmel without coming here. It is a great place for old-style shopping and the absence of any major department store makes it even more attractive. Credit card acceptance varies by store.

With dishes like Dumb Luck Coconut Shrimp and Lt. The place is usually packed and noisy, making for a great night out amidst the lights. The place has its own line of hats, shirts and other souvenirs. You will never find a wider variety of shrimp dishes anywhere else, and the service is excellent.

Huge shopping mall
1410 Del Monte Center
(Hwy 1 at the corner of Munras Ave)
Monterey and Carmel, CA 93940
United States
+1 831 373 2705
This shopping mall encompasses more than 600,000-square-feet of retail space filled with just about everything you could possibly want. This is not really an upscale touristy place like The Barnyard in nearby Carmel. It is your basic, run-of-the-mill suburban mall. You will find a Macy's, a Mervyn's, bookstores, art galleries, eateries, lots of clothing stores, gift shops, stationers and more. Make a day of it at this shopping Mecca.

Executive chef James Waller makes the most of Northern California's bounty at this epicurean outpost in the Monterey Plaza Hotel. House-made pasta, fresh-caught seafood and organic produce figure heavily into the menu. It changes seasonally, but items might include Steinbeck's duck, roast rack of lamb or broiled swordfish. The dining room is sophisticated and richly decorated with Oriental carpeting and floral-patterned upholstery. Glass windows along two sides of the restaurant afford excellent views of the Bay. The service is terrific.

Grasing's Coastal Cuisine

Coastal cuisine with wine
Northwest corner of Sixth Avenue and Mission Street
Monterey and Carmel, CA 93921
United States
+1 831 624 6562
This new restaurant was voted the best by Adventures in Dining Magazine's readers' poll and it offers a delicious variety of Central California coastal cuisine. Locals haunt the place. The selection of wines is designed to perfectly complement the dishes: a 1998 Honig Sauvignon Blanc is paired with Mustard-crusted Halibut, for example. You can eat inside, surrounded by polished wood surfaces, or on the patio. Entrees average USD20-25. It is a great bet for a reception or an intimate dinner. The service is warm and friendly.

The decor of this upscale restaurant in downtown Carmel is sophisticated yet comfortable. The airy dining area has an exposed-beam ceiling, arched windows and white linen tablecloths. The menu features Beef Carpaccio, Duck Ravioli and a number of other items that balance on the fine line between eclectic and pretentious. John Pisto's Abalonetti Seafood Trattoria

Seafood favorite by a respected name
57 Fisherman's Wharf
Monterey and Carmel, CA 93940
United States
+1 831 373 1851
Vaguely nautical from the outside and quite contemporary from the inside, this restaurant is one of four ventures by Peninsula celebrity chef John Pisto. The interior is white on white on white with a few indoor trees and potted palms adding patches of green. The paint job plus the amount of light that filters in through the oversized windows causes the place to almost sparkle when the sun is at its peak. Guests dine on fresh fish, seafood pastas, wood-fired pizzas and, the house specialty, calamari prepared in one of a half-dozen different ways. See website for menu and more.

Big portions and martinis

Pacific's Edge

Famous view and cuisine
120 Highland Drive
(in the Highlands Inn)
Monterey and Carmel, CA 93923
United States
+1 831 622 5445
The dramatic, panoramic view of Big Sur is probably this restaurant's primary claim to fame, but the cuisine and wine list have also earned a reputation among well-heeled travelers to the Monterey Peninsula. Dine on creative and contemporary dishes like Roasted Day Boat Sea Scallops or Grilled Colorado Rack of Lamb. Most of the vegetables and many seafood items are harvested just outside the hotel. The several-course prix fixe menu can be ordered with or without wine pairings. Needless to say, the ambience is elegant and exclusive; dress accordingly.

This is the only restaurant in the Monterey area that is right on the ocean. The inside is subdued, but it offers huge windows that are practically on the cliff. Watch sea lions, pelicans, and everything else as the waves come crashing in. The service is impeccable for the locals, tourists and wedding parties here. Specialties include swordfish steak and Filet Mignon. The wine list is fairly extensive. Day or night, the view is awesome.

Long popular with locals and tourists alike, this restaurant has several special features--each with its own appeal: its oak bar is nearly 200 years old, while the Cannery Row room has a pirate-like atmosphere; the conservatory is alive with statues, and the Captain's Room captures days-gone-by with its Barbary Coast feel. Tillie Gort's Cafe

Vegetarian since 1969
111 Central Avenue
(near Eardley Street)
Monterey and Carmel, CA 93950
United States
+1 831 373 0335
Consistently named "Best Restaurant for Vegetarians" by local publications, Tillie Gort's is a great place to hang out and enjoy fresh, healthy meals. Though the vegetarian (and even vegan) options are plentiful (don't miss the veggie-laden pastas or the "No Meat" Loaf), carnivores are looked after as well (chicken enchiladas or a cheeseburger with sauteed mushrooms ought to do the trick). Breakfast is popular, probably due to the alluring array of scrambles, omelettes and benedicts (not to mention the Artichoke Frittada or the Cinnamon French Toast). Beer, wine, an assortment of coffee and tea drinks, as well as a nice selection of exotic juices are available. See website for menu and more.

Wickets

Intimate bistro at Bernardus
415 Carmel Valley Road
(Bernardus Lodge)
Monterey and Carmel, CA 93924
United States
+1 831 658 3500
The food at this pleasant bistro is prepared under the same direction as the fine cuisine at Marinus, but the ambience is quite a bit more casual. Indoor and outdoor seating is available. The outdoor seating overlooks the croquet lawn, hence the restaurant's name. Visitors and locals dine on light California-Mediterranean fare. Try the Yellowfin Tuna Tartare for an appetizer, followed by a dish of rich Paella. A glass of Bernardus wine makes the perfect accompaniment. The place is appropriate for family dinners or for relaxed cocktailing.

Will's Fargo Dining House and Saloon

Classic western steakhouse
Carmel Valley Road
(11 Miles from Highway 1)
Monterey and Carmel, CA 93924
United States
+1 831 659 2774
This classic western steakhouse has been serving up massive portions of meat and seafood for more than 40 years. You have the choice of dining inside amidst the turn-of-the-last-century decor, or outside on the patio. Either way, you will be able to choose exactly how you want your steak cut and cooked. The service here is dynamite. Go for the 22-ounce Porterhouse or the rack of lamb with pesto. This place includes a neat saloon, and you can even buy meat to take home.
