Since this four-star seafood restaurant is right on Fisherman's Wharf, the view cannot be beat. It specializes in Sicilian seafood and the photographs lining the walls depict the owners' fishing background. A variety of tasty fresh fish meals with pasta are available, but the cioppino is the specialty of the house and is terrific. The wood-burning oven cranks out some great steak and lamb dishes as well. The wine list is eclectic, topping out with the usual USD200 Dom Perignon and an Italian Red, Tignanello, Marchesi Antinore at USD132. The service is family-like and locals frequent the place on a regular basis. See website for menus, videos, and more.

The flavors of coastal France, Spain and Italy are brought into play at this restaurant, serving as the inspiration and the culinary backbone for such dishes as Bouillabaisse Marseleillaise and Osso Buco Fandango. Dishes are peppery, flavorful and rich. Order a selection of tapas as an appetizer. The bill will be high, but the place encourages diners to follow the European habit of stretching dinner into a three-hour experience. The interior is warm and handsome. Encompassing nearly 5,000 square feet, this Tudor-style British pub claims to be the original one in the area. It has a load of beers and ales on tap as well as 60 single-malt scotches available. You can relax in the heated garden patio with its own fireplace, or hang inside, where you can enjoy live entertainment six nights of the week. Food is traditional pub fare: bangers, burgers, and fish and chips. There is no better beer selection in Monterey, and the happy hour is constantly being voted the best in town by locals. It is always fun here. See website for menu, beer list, specialty drinks, photos, and more.

Passionfish

Fresh Fish & Fine Wine
701 Lighthouse Ave
Monterey and Carmel, CA 93950
United States
+1 831 655 3311
In spite of its somewhat suggestive name, this restaurant is a model of propriety. The dining room is comfortable yet sophisticated. The cream-colored walls are adorned with just a bit of artwork, but not too much. Low lights and proper white table linens add a refined touch. The specialty of the house is its ever-changing selection of fresh, locally caught fish. The wine list has won awards in the past, and the restaurant is proud to offer many of the vintages at very affordable prices.

Peppoli

New to Spanish Bay
2700 Seventeen Mile Drive
Monterey and Carmel, CA 93953
United States
+1 831 647 7490
It is easy to guess what this restaurant's focus is after you learn that it is the namesake of a famed Italian winemaker. Do not visit for a good glass of porter. Instead, select from the impressive list of rare and expensive wines. The Tuscan-inspired cuisine is a treat with or without wine. Start with Cacciucco alla Livornese, a tangy seafood soup seasoned with saffron, and move on to the cheese-stuffed Cannelloni al Forno. Almost all of the decadent desserts have been thoroughly soaked in liquor. The restaurant is handsome, dignified and graceful, perfectly conducive to either hand-holding or deal-closing.

Stillwater Bar & Grill

Braised, grilled, roasted or raw
Seventeen Mile Drive
(Lodge at Pebble Beach)
Monterey and Carmel, CA 93953
United States
Like the other restaurants at Pebble Beach, this place has a deceivingly folksy name to go with a decidedly up-market atmosphere. The decor is modern with exposed beams, hanging deco-style lamps and abstract artwork. The menu features an array of creative, mouthwatering seafood dishes such as Oyster Chowder ($7), Cedar Plank Roasted Salmon Roulade ($19.75) and Applewood Smoked Sea Bass ($21). The raw bar offerings change nightly, but there is always a Raw Fish Board to appease the sashimi lovers in the house. There is great service, too.

Vegetarian since 1969
111 Central Avenue
(near Eardley Street)
Monterey and Carmel, CA 93950
United States
+1 831 373 0335
Consistently named "Best Restaurant for Vegetarians" by local publications, Tillie Gort's is a great place to hang out and enjoy fresh, healthy meals. Though the vegetarian (and even vegan) options are plentiful (don't miss the veggie-laden pastas or the "No Meat" Loaf), carnivores are looked after as well (chicken enchiladas or a cheeseburger with sauteed mushrooms ought to do the trick). Breakfast is popular, probably due to the alluring array of scrambles, omelettes and benedicts (not to mention the Artichoke Frittada or the Cinnamon French Toast). Beer, wine, an assortment of coffee and tea drinks, as well as a nice selection of exotic juices are available. See website for menu and more.
