Lively Mexican joint |
7166 Carmel Valley Road Monterey and Carmel, CA 93923 United States +1 831 625 2252 |
With all the vintage auto memorabilia hanging on the walls of this place, you will think you are back on a racetrack in 1910. Dine on the heated patio, which has a great view of the valley, or have an indoor feast. The place somewhat resembles a gas station, but the margaritas are dynamite and it serves up a wealth of reasonably priced Mexican dishes. There are daily specials and occasional live music out on the patio. The friendly staff attracts a wide-ranging clientele. Review © 2007, Wcities |

47 Fisherman's Wharf No. 1 Monterey and Carmel, CA 93940 United States +1 800 843 3462 |
Since this four-star seafood restaurant is right on Fisherman's Wharf, the view cannot be beat. It specializes in Sicilian seafood and the photographs lining the walls depict the owners' fishing background. A variety of tasty fresh fish meals with pasta are available, but the cioppino is the specialty of the house and is terrific. The wood-burning oven cranks out some great steak and lamb dishes as well. The wine list is eclectic, topping out with the usual USD200 Dom Perignon and an Italian Red, Tignanello, Marchesi Antinore at USD132. The service is family-like and locals frequent the place on a regular basis. See website for menus, videos, and more. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Jalapeno jelly and tofu tacos |
San Carlos Street (between Fifth and Sixth avenues) Monterey and Carmel, CA 93923 United States +1 831 626 1997 |
Some of the Oaxacan specialties on the menu at this place seem more nouveau than any California Cuisine chef's latest offering. Take, for example, the grilled fresh catch topped with a banana saute. The flavors are new to many diners, but they are traditional to certain regions of Mexico. Less adventurous eaters can stick with enchiladas, tostadas and fajitas. The wine selection is practically nil, but the selection of rare tequilas more than makes up for it. The decor strikes the right note: elegant, but not too stuffy. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Voted by Coastal Weekly as Monterey's best new restaurant, this place is, as the title suggests, for those who have a passion for large portions and living life to the fullest. The decor tkaes one back to the 1920s prohibition era where the martini was king. A great place for lunch or dinner, and the service is excellent. The wine list features a variety of California wines. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The offerings on this menu go far above and beyond pastrami on rye. Sample Chopped Chicken Livers, Gefilte Fish, Noodle Kugel and other Jewish favorites. Conservative eaters can go for a sandwich or meatloaf. Breakfast is served all day long. The decor of the restaurant is simple but not as sparse as in many delis. The funky chairs, green carpet and mood lights make for a rather Art Deco ambience. This is a casual, inexpensive place for a filling breakfast or lunch. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The kitchen and rotisserie are completely open for all to see in this colorfully decorated bistro that combines American, Italian and French cuisines. The interior is fancy and sleek, but the attitude is very casual, which accounts for the wide-ranging clientele. It won Esquire's award for "best eatery of 1995" for plates such as Grilled Gulf Prawns over Caramelized Leek Risotto and Veal Cheeks over Mustard Whipped Potatoes. Beginning at around $20 for the house varietals, the impressive wine list includes some alternative whites and adventurous reds. The friendly service will bring you back many times. The dramatic, panoramic view of Big Sur is probably this restaurant's primary claim to fame, but the cuisine and wine list have also earned a reputation among well-heeled travelers to the Monterey Peninsula. Dine on creative and contemporary dishes like Roasted Day Boat Sea Scallops or Grilled Colorado Rack of Lamb. Most of the vegetables and many seafood items are harvested just outside the hotel. 2700 Seventeen Mile Drive Monterey and Carmel, CA 93953 United States +1 831 647 7490 |
It is easy to guess what this restaurant's focus is after you learn that it is the namesake of a famed Italian winemaker. Do not visit for a good glass of porter. Instead, select from the impressive list of rare and expensive wines. The Tuscan-inspired cuisine is a treat with or without wine. Start with Cacciucco alla Livornese, a tangy seafood soup seasoned with saffron, and move on to the cheese-stuffed Cannelloni al Forno. Almost all of the decadent desserts have been thoroughly soaked in liquor. The restaurant is handsome, dignified and graceful, perfectly conducive to either hand-holding or deal-closing.
