Montreal, "The Paris of North America," essentially consists of a downtown, or modern city, and Old Montreal (Vieux-Montréal), the original city nestled around the Old Port (Vieux-Port). While most of the better hotels are located downtown Old Montreal boasts some of the city's finest restaurants and historical sites and has a real sense of old world decor and charm. Many European style hotels are available in this area, where many tourists visit but few stay overnight.

A modest hill separates the two areas, and both are accessible via the subway, or Metro, as it's called locally. In the winter, one need never even venture outside: Old Montreal is linked to Downtown via the World Trade Centre and the Underground City. In fact, Montreal is one of the easiest cities to navigate in North America: no matter where one stays, one will never be too far from the action.

Downtown

Downtown is the modern heart of the city and is where most businesses and upscale retail outlets are located. Virtually all of Downtown is concentrated within a 10-block area, connected through the aforementioned 30-kilometre Underground City of shops, restaurants, theatres, banks and hotels for those who don't want to brave winter temperatures.

Ste-Catherine Street is the main shopping area for modest to middle-income budgets, while Sherbrooke Street houses most of the city's best art galleries, high-end clothing stores and top-quality hotels. The Ritz-Carlton is the grande dame of local hotels, featuring splendid 19th-century architecture. The bar here is a favourite watering hole for locals and visitors alike. Nearby, the Hotel Omni serves as a preferred locale for visiting film and rock stars. The Hôtel Le Germain, meanwhile, is Montreal's leading boutique hotel, offering cutting edge style and high-end amenities at astronomical prices. Mid-range Sherbrooke Street area hotels include the Best Western Ville-Marie Hotel and Suites and the Marriott Residence Inn.

Downtown West

The eastern and western fringes of the downtown core reveal their own range of accommodations, from budget to high-end. The luxurious Le Meridien Versailles at Sherbrooke Street is a good example of a popular smaller hotel for out-of-towners. It is situated a stone's throw away from the west-end Guy Metro station, as is the more mid-range Hôtel du Fort.

Downtown East

Another significant cluster of mid-range hotels centres around Sherbrooke Street just east of McGill University. The Quality Hotel, for example, just off Sherbrooke Street on Avenue du Parc, offers good value and is a five-minute walk from Place des Arts and the Metro station. Other popular mid-to-high range hotels on the eastern fringe of Downtown include the Delta Montreal and the Sheraton Four Points Montreal.

Old Montreal

Old Montreal's 18th- and 19th-century architecture makes it a favourite location for film shoots, where it often doubles for 1920s Chicago or New York. So unique is its character that it was declared a historic site in 1964 by the Quebec government and afforded special protection. This area was originally a fortified town and the centre of commerce before many businesses gradually moved uptown at the beginning of the 20th century.

The area has enjoyed an enormous revival and has seen a number of hotels spring up, notably the Hotel Inter-Continental across from the Palais des Congrès Convention Centre. This is the only truly modern hotel in Old Montreal, although architecturally it blends wonderfully with the surrounding older buildings. The Holiday Inn Select, in nearby Chinatown, is the nearest mid-range option.

Budget

For those eager or willing to leave the name brand hotels behind, Old Montreal offers a host of charming, reasonably priced options. These include L'Auberge du Vieux-Port and, for the truly budget-conscious, the attractive Backpackers of Old Montreal hostel.

If it's Good Enough for Old Ben…

The ultimate Old Montreal accommodations can be found at Hotel Pierre du Calvet, a converted home—built in 1725 and restored in 1966—where Benjamin Franklin once stayed. The magnificent 10-room hotel, located in the eastern part of Old Montreal near the IMAX Theatre, is accessible from the Champ-de-Mars Metro. This is a rare opportunity to spend a night in European-style opulence.

During the summer, Old Montreal is a favourite spot for visitors, thanks to its outdoor cafés, cobblestone streets, musicians, artists, calèche rides and boat cruises. In winter, the area comes alive with ice sculptures, light shows and a huge outdoor skating rink. For travelers really looking to immerse themselves in Montreal's charms, it is a great option.

This ideally located hotel was renovated recently, and the result is some of the area's most spacious rooms at extremely reasonable prices. Each features a coffee maker (and daily coffee) and minibar, while business rooms and suites offer large desks, data ports and Jacuzzi baths. Aside from a pleasant décor and professional service, the hotel could otherwise be considered "no frills." Zawedeh offers casual Lebanese fare, while Olio serves grilled sandwiches and excellent coffee.

The rooms all feature individual touches, including some with fireplaces, lending a homey touch to the accommodations. Downtown

Montreal
Canada
This district was once the wealthiest neighbourhood in Canada. It is estimated that the few hundred families in the district held an astonishing 70 percent of the entire country's wealth! Massive homes such as Ravenscrag-a 60-room mansion on des Pins Avenue West-were typical. You can still catch glimpses of this grandeur, where upscale apartment buildings, boutiques, restaurants, art galleries and museums have replaced many former residences, especially north of Sherbrooke.

Run by the Germain-des-Prés Development Group—the visionary hotel designers behind Quebec City's Hôtel Dominion 1912; this boutique property occupies a decidedly nondescript mid-rise office building in the depths of downtown Montreal. Inside, however, guests enjoy cutting-edge design, top-of-the-line furnishings and high-quality artwork. The elegant, ultramodern mezzanine lounge is the ideal place to unwind with a coffee or cocktail after a hard day. For those in need of an accommodation experience far beyond the typical midtown hotel, Le St-Germain is a stylish (if also very expensive) option.

Parc Avenue

A transformed place
Parc Avenue at Sherbrooke Street
Montreal, QC H2V 4G9

Beginning at Sherbrooke Street, Parc Avenue runs north through a diverse series of neighbourhoods and landscapes. North of des Pins the street widens and runs directly under Mount Royal and Jeanne-Mance Park's bongo players and tobogganing. Further north, Parc is the main drag of the city's Greek area; Milos is just one of many excellent Greek restaurants. The Fairmount and St-Viateur bagel shops, both just east of Parc, are remnants of the once huge Jewish community.

Quality Hotel Downtown

Functional and central
3440 Parc Ave
(Near Sherbrooke)
Montreal, QC H2X 2H5
Canada

Popular with groups because of its central but not upscale location, this modern eight-storey hotel is situated more or less equidistant from Old Montreal, downtown and the nightlife of the Plateau Mont-Royal. Rooms and decorations are typical of the Quality Hotel chain: functional, attractive and immaculate. The restaurant features a pleasant terrace overlooking bustling Parc Avenue, while a convenience store on-site allows guests on a budget to lead a self-sufficient existence while in Montreal.

This magnificent hotel, the oldest in the Ritz-Carlton chain, offers what are undoubtedly Montreal's most posh accommodations. Guests enter the opulent lobby, where men must wear jackets and ties, under a beautifully restored awning from Sherbrooke Street. Inside guests find flawless service, luxurious rooms of various sizes and no less than three Montreal institutions: the soothing bar, where many celebrities stop in for a drink; Les Jardins du Ritz, which is famous for its afternoon tea; and the Café de Paris, one of the city's best French restaurants.

Sherbrooke Street

Stylish and elegant
Sherbrooke Street
Montreal, QC no zip
Canada
Running from the far east end of the city to the far west, this broad street is one of the most stylish and elegant in Montreal, with much of the architecture still preserved both in private homes and in the various businesses and institutions along the way. Olympic Park dominates the east end, and the street's downtown passage is defined by the McGill University campus and high rise towers. To the west lies what is called the "Golden Square Mile," home to elegant buildings and the Musée des Beaux-Arts.

Ste-Catherine Street

Main commercial artery
Catherine Street at Westmount
Montreal, QC
Canada
This incredibly diverse street could be considered the city's chief east-west artery. At its western extreme lies the posh boutiques and restaurants of Westmount. It then runs through the heart of the downtown shopping district, past Simons, the Eaton Centre and Birks' Jewellers, to name just a few. Farther east, the street becomes the main drag of the Gay Village, with its charming bistros and seething nightlife. Vendôme Métro serves Westmount; the Green Line travels along Ste-Catherine as far east as Papineau.

World's largest underground pedestrian network
800 de La Gauchetière St W
(Montreal Public Transit Authority)
Montreal, QC H5A 1J6
Canada
+1 514 843 8000
http://www.toutmontreal.com/en...
The world's largest underground pedestrian network shelters Montrealers from both the scorching heat of summer and the frigid winter winds. More than 30 kilometres of passageways link the stations of Montreal's Metro and contain (at last count) 1,600 boutiques, 200 restaurants, 34 cinemas and 1,600 apartments. Some 500,000 people use it every day. Although the area stays open as long as the Metro stations themselves, the best time to visit is between 9am-11am and 2pm-4pm, when it is least crowded. Contact the public transit authority for transportation information.
