Blattl's Hotel Altmünchen

Old and new Bavaria
Mariahilfplatz 4
Munich, Bayern 81541
Germany
+49 89 458440
Centrally located on Mariahilf Platz, but nevertheless a little off the beaten track and away from the hustle and bustle of the city, Blattl's Hotel Altmünchen makes an ideal base for exploring the city on foot or by public transport. The emphasis here is on Bavarian lifestyle: the decor bears a strong, southern German stamp and the staff will leave you in no doubt about where you are. Nevertheless, standards are international class and are a wonderful example of the 'new Bavarian outlook' (encouraged by the government) of Laptop and Lederhosen. Even the service has given up traditional Munich grumpiness in exchange for a friendly, helpful attitude.

This hotel is located in the buzzing Haidhausen district, known for its pubs and cultural life. The Gasteig cultural centre - home to the Philharmonie concert house and city library - is next-door. Although it is situated on a main road, the windows of this eighties building are of course sound-proofed, though many of them face the rear anyway. Very good service and a superior interior with a pleasant lobby make this a good top-end choice. Two hotel restaurants serve Bavarian and international cuisine.

Don't let the exterior of this hotel with 396 rooms fool you. The property may stand on the site of the Munich Post Office and does have a 19th Century look, but the hotel has enough technology built into it to fascinate the most demanding gadget lover! One can browse the net using Wi-fi in the minimalist yet comfortable rooms, or head down to the solarium instead of catching the afternoon sun. But it's not just the gadget geeks the hotel caters to. The fitness centre and the sauna are a big hit with all visitors and so is the heated pool. Gourmet lovers can enjoy the food at one of the restaurants, or party at the discotheque. The Dorint Sofitel Bayerpost Munchen also caters to the business fraternity and offers a self service business center and various conference rooms.

More so than most hotels in the city, the Bayerischer Hof has a fascinating history. It was built in 1840 by King Ludwig I's architect Maffei to provide first-class lodgings for visitors to the nearby palace. The Montgelas Palace, which the hotel bought in 1969, was initially a Minister's residence and later became the seat of the royal administration. Elegant and sophisticated, this is one of the leading hotels in the region, with spacious rooms reflecting a variety of stylesHotel Bayerischer Hof—part modern in Laura Ashley vein, part traditional and classical in the style of the Montgelas Palace. Its various restaurants offer quality cuisine, with contemporary international dishes in the idyllic Garden Restaurant, Asian specialities in Trader Vic's and wholefood and vegetarian fare in the Palais Keller. The hotel is part of the Augustiner restaurant chain and the food and beer are therefore extremely good. Despite being in a lively part of town, this hotel is situated on a quiet side street, the city centre being only a short walk away. Hotel Herzog Wilhelm has been in the Farngruber family for three generations and the owners do their best to maintain its long-standing tradition. In general, the hotel is simply furnished and the standard is acceptable for a mid-range hotel. It was renovated in the 1970s, so the hotel's long tradition is not always immediately obvious. It is, however, noticeable in the service, which is as friendly and accommodating as of old.

Mandarin Oriental München

First class hotel in tranquil surroundings
Neuturmstraße 1
Munich, Bayern 80331
Germany

For many people, the former Hotel Rafael, run by the Mandarin Oriental chain since 2000, is the best hotel in the city. Having said that, it is considerably smaller, more exclusive and dearer than other top-notch hotels. Its location in a tranquil part of the city centre is not the finest of addresses, but it is nevertheless peaceful and very central, with the National Theatre, Schauspielhaus and Marienplatz only a few minutes walk away. In terms of style the hotel is modern and spacious and the interior is second to none. The hotel restaurant, Mark's, serves excellent haute cuisine.

Pension Beck

Good value, friendly and central
Thierschstraße 36
Lehel
Munich, Bayern 80538
Germany

This guest house is named after the elderly lady who runs the place. The location in Lehel is perfect - quiet, but close to the city centre, the River Isar and the English Garden. All rooms have telephone and TV, but only a few have bathrooms. Some rooms do, however, have the luxury of a balcony and there are a couple of extra-large rooms with cooking facilities for families.

Pension Geiger

A trip back in time

Ideally located within easy walking distance of the Pinakothek, Königsplatz and the pubs in the university area, Pension Geiger oozes charm. Decorated a bit like an old Bavarian sitting room, it may be slightly kitschy, but it's definitely cozy and comfortable. Not all rooms have showers and toilet.
