Carnival season
Viktualienmarkt
Munich, Bayern 80331

http://www.muenchen-tourist.de
Munich's two-month long carnival season (during which hundreds of parties and events take place) starts with the official "coronation" of the carnival Prince and Princess on the Marienplatz and reaches its peak on Shrove Tuesday with the dance of the market women on Viktualienmarkt. On Ash Wednesday locals queue in front of the Fischbrunnen fountain to rinse their purse. This, apparently, will ensure it will soon be full again. Make sure you can get to one of the carnival events if you are in Munich in January or February. See website's "event" section for listing of yearly happenings.

Although the Magdalenenfest has been celebrated since 1728, its venue shifted to the beautiful and massive Hirschgarten only in 1959. Celebrated around the time of the St. Mary Magdelene feast, it has something for everyone. Scores of vendors selling wares like clothes, jewelry, household items and more, tempt you into loosening your purse strings; while the food and drinks compel you to loosen your belt a notch or two. Rides like the mini scooters and Ferris wheel will keep the kids occupied. So pick up a chilled beer or some candy and explore the fair.

Great news for all those who like the beer-swilling, oompah band kind of atmosphere but find the crowds at the Oktoberfest too much. St. Martin's Day

The day of the goose
Downtown District
Munich, Bayern
Germany
+49 89 212 3970
A favorite holiday is St. Martin's Day. In remembrance of the 4th century bishop, it begins with a children's lantern procession through the town that begins in the morning. It culminates with a meal of roasted goose, the animal symbol of St. Martin. Admission to the event is free, but make your reservation at a local restaurant well in advance for the goose dinner.

Strong Beer Festival

Strong beer festival
Am Nockherberg

Munich, Bayern 81541
Germany

Starkbierzeit (Strong Beer Festival) is like the Oktoberfest without the tourists. Known by locals as the 'fifth season', this centuries' old festival harks back to the Paulaner monks who used to brew an extra-strong beer to help sustain themselves throughout the fasting period of Lent. Every year on St. Joseph's Day (17th March) the first barrel of Starkbier is tapped amidst great celebrations. Local beer halls like Paulaner and Löwenbräu lay on special dances, parties and other events during the ensuing three-week period. Anyone intending to visit Munich during the strong beer season is advised to start training now.

The Tollwood Festival has established itself as a firm favorite among locals, quite probably because it makes a pleasant change from the oompah-band, beer-swilling type of festivity Munich is otherwise known for. The festival takes place every summer and winter, featuring live rock and pop acts as well as a smattering of jazz and world music bands, theatre ensembles, comedy and cabaret shows. There are plenty of vendors selling arts, crafts, food and drink. The little ones will enjoy several playgrounds, theatre shows and cultural workshops. Free admission.
