Fun at the fair |
Hirschgartenstrasse 1 Hirschgarten Munich, Bayern 80639 Germany +49 (0)89 6975 9393 (Organisers) http://www.muenchner-volksfest... |
Although the Magdalenenfest has been celebrated since 1728, its venue shifted to the beautiful and massive Hirschgarten only in 1959. Celebrated around the time of the St. Mary Magdelene feast, it has something for everyone. Scores of vendors selling wares like clothes, jewelry, household items and more, tempt you into loosening your purse strings; while the food and drinks compel you to loosen your belt a notch or two. Rides like the mini scooters and Ferris wheel will keep the kids occupied. So pick up a chilled beer or some candy and explore the fair. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Ruppertstraße 28 (Isarvorstadt) Munich, Bayern 80337 Germany +49 89 721 2749 http://www.substanz-muenchen.de/ |
Poetry Slam did not originate in Germany but, like McDonald's and Levi's, is a popular import from our American brethren. The idea of a verbal acrobatics competition with the public as the judge was first thought of by Chicago poet Marc Smith in the mid-1980's and was exported to Munich a decade later. The event takes place in the Substanz pub at 8p every first Su of the month. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Strong beer festival |
Am Nockherberg (Paulanerkeller) Munich, Bayern 81541 Germany +49 89 2339 6500 |
Starkbierzeit (Strong Beer Festival) is like the Oktoberfest without the tourists. Known by locals as the 'fifth season', this centuries' old festival harks back to the Paulaner monks who used to brew an extra-strong beer to help sustain themselves throughout the fasting period of Lent. Every year on St. Joseph's Day (17th March) the first barrel of Starkbier is tapped amidst great celebrations. Local beer halls like Paulaner and Löwenbräu lay on special dances, parties and other events during the ensuing three-week period. Anyone intending to visit Munich during the strong beer season is advised to start training now. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The festival takes place every summer and winter, featuring live rock and pop acts as well as a smattering of jazz and world music bands, theatre ensembles, comedy and cabaret shows. There are plenty of vendors selling arts, crafts, food and drink. The little ones will enjoy several playgrounds, theatre shows and cultural workshops. Free admission. Review © 2007, Wcities |
