Munich definitely has lodgings to suit every budget and every taste, but the fact that the city attracts over 6 million visitors a year and is a major trade and convention site, means that rooms are often booked months in advance. It's not always possible to be spontaneous here, so think about your accommodation in advance!

City Centre

The most famous hotels are all in the City Centre, which is probably the most expensive area to stay. Being so centrally located means that these hotels are all within walking distance from the Marienplatz, which makes them ideal starting points for both shopping and sightseeing. The City Centre is probably the most expensive area to stay but most of the hotels here are first-rate; choose from luxury hotels such as the Platzl, the Bayerisher Hof , or the sumptous Vier Jahreszeiten.

Railway Station

The area around the main railway station (Hauptbahnhof) is also popular with tourists. It's a good area for those who are in Munich on business as you can reach any place in the city or the trade centre easily. Try the Drei Löwen Residenz, the Exelsior or the Mercure, which is next to very near the city's exhibition halls.

Airport

Should you need to be near the airport, then try the Arabella Sheraton, which was built primarily to cater for business people. One other option is the Kempinski Airport Hotel.

Backpackers

Backpackers and young travelers may wish to take advantage of one of the city's youth hostels, all of which are well kept and centrally located. Try the friendly and well-located Jugendgästehaus.

Those wishing to stay in one of the city's more distinct quarters, should try the traditional Lehel area, which is situated between the English Gardens, the Maximilianstraße and the Isar. Hotels with character in this area are everywhere. Try the Splendid, Blattl's Parkhotel, the Hotel Advocat or the Hotel Adria, which is nice and quiet.

TheNymphenburg district, which is extremely picturesque, has a number of hotels. Many of these are especially family friendly and only a short walk away from the castle. The Hotel Kriemhild Garni, the Hotel Orly and the Hotel Bären.

Useful information

1. Be sure to book early and remember that popular hotels are likely be full months in advance. You really do need to make a reservation. 2. Be prepared for higher than average rates when the city is host to some of its most famous events such as the Beer Festival (Oktoberfest) or during Fashion Week (March and September). 3. The best time to explore the city is in spring or during the summer holidays. 4. Find out about public transport links to and from your lodgings - driving in Munich is no fun. 5. Don't be afraid to ask for special rates. Many hotels have a variety of deals, which they will only reveal when asked. Some large hotels also have discount rates for expense-account business travellers. 6. If you do arrive in Munich without having made a reservation, then go to the Main Train Station (Hauptbahnhof), where the Tourist Information Bureau (Touristeninformation should be able to help.

City Centre

Munich
Germany
Munich's historic city centre lies between Karlstor, Isartor, Sendlinger Tor and Odeonsplatz. Splendid neo-baroque buildings stand in the shadows of futuristic glass and steel constructions. For an excellent view of the city, climb to the top of St Peter's Church, affectionately known by locals as 'Alter Peter', or 'Old Peter'. The historic centre also boasts numerous other churches, including the Asamkirche, Theatinerkirche and Dreifaltigkeitskirche, as well as the city's most distinctive landmark, the twin-towered Frauenkirche. Street performers entertain the crowds at Marienplatz, but everyone's attention is immediately drawn to the show on the town hall's bell tower when it begins to chime.

Englischer Garden

Munich
Germany
If you haven't fallen in love with Munich yet, then you will when you see the English Gardens. The lush lawns, romantic hideaways and boisterous beer gardens offer something for everyone. Sun worshippers can improve their tan at the Eisbach, tea lovers can take part in a traditional tea ceremony at the Japanese tea house, while others may prefer to savour that inimitable 'Munich feeling' in the beer garden near the Chinese Tower. The view from the Monopterus - a former haunt of the flower power generation - is well worth seeing. This inner-city oasis is a must for visitors with a bit of time on their hands.

More so than most hotels in the city, the Bayerischer Hof has a fascinating history. It was built in 1840 by King Ludwig I's architect Maffei to provide first-class lodgings for visitors to the nearby palace. The Montgelas Palace, which the hotel bought in 1969, was initially a Minister's residence and later became the seat of the royal administration. Elegant and sophisticated, this is one of the leading hotels in the region, with spacious rooms reflecting a variety of stylesHotel Bayerischer Hof—part modern in Laura Ashley vein, part traditional and classical in the style of the Montgelas Palace. Its various restaurants offer quality cuisine, with contemporary international dishes in the idyllic Garden Restaurant, Asian specialities in Trader Vic's and wholefood and vegetarian fare in the Palais Keller. The Bayerischer Hof Nightclub is one of Germany's top jazz venues.

Germany

A modern, medium-sized hotel in the higher price bracket, well furnished and located close to the Hauptbahnhof (main railway station). Its position is not exactly quiet, but on the other hand, the surroundings are lively and the city centre, as well as most of the city's major attractions, are accessible on foot. The rooms are generously proportioned, bright, welcoming and functional, although the ceilings are a little low (the building is a post-war construction). All rooms, of course, have bath and WC, as well as telephone with fax and modem connections.
