No German city is better known for relishing the culture of eating and drinking than Munich. Spending hard-earned cash on culinary extravagances has become second nature to the locals. The city boasts several restaurants ranging from the good to the very good, however it should be noted that the quality of the cooking is not the only thing that is high; prices are fixed accordingly. Restaurants are mostly located in the inner city areas: Altstadt, Schwabing, Maxvorstadt and Isarvorstadt.

Luxury Class Restaurants

The flagship of Munich's gastromical community is Tantris, which has won several awards by the dreaded Michelin Guide critics. Munich's luxury class of restaurants also includes small and intimate places with a loyal regular customer base; such as Boettner, which has remained true to its elegant tradition for generations, as well as Kleinschmidtz, which has in recent years successfully transformed itself from a wine merchants into a popular venue for those in the know.

Traditional Bavarian Cooking

Of course Munich is not without its share of traditional Bavarian cooking and is famous for its roast pork, dumplings, cabbage and white sausages. Those who fear the tourist crowds of the famous Hofbräuhaus should head for the Andechser am Dom, where they serve beer brewed by monks at the Andechs Monastery, 50 kilometers outside Munich. Traditional dishes from Upper Bavaria, prepared in the good old-fashioned way are available at Weißes Bräuhaus. The Wirtshaus zum Huterer has a small yet refined atmosphere, and for those who have had their fill of Bavarian beer, there are always the fine wines of the Pfälzer Weinprobierstube.

International Cuisine

International cuisine is served at Hunsinger Pacific, which offers "Fusion Cooking" and a luxurious ambience, at the higher end of the price scale. Slightly lower prices but a higher perspective is offered by the Metropolitan, where you can enjoy an outstanding view over Marienplatz and the town hall. Kays Bistro has been a favorite of Munich's VIPs and celebrities for several years.

European Cuisine

Some consider Munich to be "Italy's most northern city", which is confirmed by the sheer number of Italian restaurants. Pizza at Bei Mario, traditional Italian cooking at Osteria Italiana and the unique Italian way of life at Acquarello to name but a few.

Unimpressed by Italian domination of the culinary lanscape, the French influence is also at work here: Chez Philippe is more like a living room, serving delicacies by our western neighbors. Fans loyal to La Bretagne treasure it for the freshly prepared fish dishes from the Atlantic and Mediterranean. The Spanish taste for fish has also left its mark on Munich, in cosy restaurants with a relaxed and laid-back feel to them, such as Spado's or the earthly Andalusian El Perro y el Griego.

Asian Cuisine

Those who relish a skillfully prepared fish dish should try one of the Japanese restaurants - their numbers are increasing rapidly in Munich as Sushi become more and more popular. Good Sushi restaurants include Enshu and Tokami. Other options for fans of Asian cooking are Hong Kong Bar, Man Fat (Chinese) and Shida (Thai) or the Indian Tandoori and Ganga.

American Cuisine

Even the USA has gastronomical ambassadors in Munich, they include; Munich's First Diner, Bobolovsky's and Dillinger. Young people congregate in the fashionable Tex-Mex bars such as Enchilada, Tijuana and Zapata.

Greek & Turkish Restaurants

Away from the noisy crowds of the trendy bars, Greek and Turkish restaurants are pleasant places for families. Schwimmkrabbe is a favourite meeting place for locals, Robinson often hosts jam sessions and Lucullus has the additional appeal of reasonable prices.

African & Australian Cuisine

What about African? Specialities from the African continent are to be had at the Blue Nile as well as Sahara City, which also offers the dubious pleasure of water pipe smoking. Those who have tried and tested it all should perhaps head for the land down-under; Outland offers the exotics of Australian cuisine.

Andechser am Dom

Beer brewing monks
Weinstraße 7
Innenstadt
Munich, Bayern 80333
Germany
+49 89 29 8481
The monks from Andechs, also known as the 'Holy Bavarian Mountain', have recently opened up a new establishment opposite the Frauenkirche in the centre of town. The beer-brewing monks have found an experienced partner in innkeeper Sep Krätz and word has got out that the new place is just as good as the old. Rainer Maria Latzte, a former Beuys pupil, decorated the ceilings with his 'Dream of the Bavarian Sky' and guests can order all kinds of traditional Bavarian fare, including a fantastic Fleischpflanzerl (meat loaf with potato salad).

Where Africans go to eat
Siegesstraße 22a
Schwabing
Munich, Bayern 80802
Germany
+49 89 34 2389
This simple restaurant without romantic frills is an excellent introduction to oriental and Ethiopian cuisine. The dishes are prepared according to traditional recipes without concessions to the European palate. It will take a moment to adjust before you get into the swing and you will have to learn to eat with your fingers! The pleasant staff will help you out if you are struggling. After a couple of glasses of honey wine, all your inhibitions will disappear anyway. The fact that many Africans eat here speaks volumes about the quality of the food.

Boettner

An institution in town
Pfisterstraße 9
Innenstadt
Munich, Bayern 80331
Germany
+49 89 22 1210
This old Munich institution had to move from its old home to new lodgings just in front of the Hofbräuhaus. However, the Boettner has remained true to itself and to its clientele. The old furniture was transferred and even the menu has hardly changed: traditional dishes are prepared in classical style by Frank Hartung and Wilhelm Eichinger. There is a great wine list and a lovely garden.

Fish the French way
Rablstraße 37
Haidhausen
Munich, Bayern 81669
Germany
+49 89 48 7220
This pleasant place concentrates on fish cooked the French way. With the fish shop L'Océan just around the corner, you can be sure that only the freshest fish is served. The preparation is simple yet perfect; the fish is often served grilled with assorted vegetables. The five-course meal EUR 37 is good value and should ideally be accompanied by a bottle of the house Muscadet. Main courses cost about EUR 17.50-20.

Dillinger

High-cholesterol American cuisine
Hofmannstraße 19
Sendling
Munich, Bayern 81379
Germany
+49 89 7874 9022
This restaurant took its name from one of America's most-wanted bank robbers. The decor, however, is not at all American. Dillinger's is located in a lovely arched cellar hung with bright paintings. The food, on the other hand, is typically American: giant burgers, fries, steaks, everything you can think of to take your cholesterol level to new heights. At weekends it is essential to book. You can even bring your dog.

El Perro y el Griego

Andalusian tavern
Belfortstraße 14
Haidhausen
Munich, Bayern 81667
Germany
+49 89 48 2553
This restaurant has the atmosphere of rural Andalusia - down to earth yet romantic. Just sitting here is pleasant enough, but you'll be even happier when the tapas arrive on the table. The wine racks used to decorate the restaurant can't help but tempt you to one of the Spanish wines. Whatever the time of day, El Perro y el Griego is always full, so it can get quite loud and the mood is fairly upbeat. Staff are excellent and always manage to keep on top of things despite the constant throng of customers.

Enchilada

Party, party, party
Gabelsbergerstraße 97
Maxvorstadt
Munich, Bayern 80333
Germany
+49 89 52 2297
http://www.enchilada.de
A typical Tex-Mex bar, Enchilada has become particularly renowned for its hectic party atmosphere. The clientele is mixed but mostly young. People start the evening with a bang at happy hour (5p-8p) and then continue through to 11pm, when the 'margarita hour' starts. Rumour has it that the food isn't bad either, but you have to be a certain type to want to tuck into your fajitas for EUR 12.50 while teeny-boppers scream and dance. Your time is better spent flirting.

Located in the midst of the lively Glockenbachviertel, a neighbourhood brimming with bars and restaurants, this trendy place offers great northern and southern Indian cuisine. The mostly young clientele come here to fill up on a curry, thali, or biryani before heading out into the night; others stay on to drink an Indian beer in the comfort of this fairytale-like and tastefully decorated establishment.

This most famous of pubs draws people from all over the globe, even at nine in the morning! Its unique charm comes from the Bavarian music and the handful of regulars who gather at the bar. Beer and Schmankerl (roast pork with trimmings) complete the set up. In the summertime 'real' locals make for its wonderful courtyard, while the Festsaal room hosts a Bavarian evening with music every night, costing EUR 4.50 admission. Main meals cost EUR 10-15. A litre tankard of beer costs EUR 5.70 and small mealsEUR 4.45.

The film and art scene in Munich would be all the poorer without Kai Wörsching's fantastic restaurant, a place which brings the famous and the wannabee-famous together. The guests are not the only interesting sight in this restaurant and bistro, however. The decor is equally impressive and is changed every few weeks to reflect a certain theme; the cooking is adapted accordingly. With all this glitz and glamour, it's also a good place to come just for a drink and possibly get to know the man or woman of your dreams.

This up-and-coming restaurant attracts some of the trendiest people in the city, so customers may have to wait a while for a table and kill time in the foyer with a complementary prosecco. Once shown to a seat though, you will revel in the stylish and relaxing atmosphere. The meals are fairly light, with French and Italian influences. The wine list meets the highest expectations, as does the service, which is friendly and efficient.

Lucillus consists of a long, narrow room, usually very overcrowded, but ideal for striking up conversation and even romance. Those who fancy something more serene should try sitting on the leafy patio - a great place to enjoy excellent food, especially by candlelight. The menu is reasonably priced and the service is pleasant and unobtrusive, making for a great evening all round. The platters of assorted grilled meats and fish are particularly popular.

A popular Chinese restaurant. Inside, it's like Asian kitsch never went out of fashion. The customers are a mixed bag and lap up the food which, a favorite among locals. There's a huge menu but little variety, featuring many soy sauce-y and 'five spice' dishes. Students or tourists in need of a fast fix will find it handy and fulfilling. Prices are cheap and the staff very friendly.

Outland

Down Under
Weißenburger Platz 3
Haidhausen
Munich, Bayern 81667
Germany
+49 89 211 1140
What the name promises (or threatens), the Outland provides. The restaurant is fitted in the style of an outback bar, the decor is rustic and simple, and the walls are painted with symbols from the dreamland of all German drop-outs. The clientele is mixed and relaxed - how could it be otherwise in such a place? In the summer time, you can sit outside to eat. But the most remarkable thing is the menu; if you are curious and not afraid to experiment, you can choose the likes of shark steak or fillet of kangaroo.

A real Munich institution, situated in the former Royal Guardhouse and especially popular with theatre-goers, this traditional Munich tavern fills up at the end of performances in the nearby theatres and concert houses. Try specialities such as the excellent Stuffed Stomach of Pork - it comes highly recommended. The wine-tasting bar was opened in 1950 by the Landesverband der Pfälzer in Bayern (a regional Bavarian-Palatinate association) to provide a culinary reminder of the ties between the Palatinate and Bavaria.

When you go into this restaurant, you will find yourself transported into the magical world of 1001 Nights. The Lebanese dishes are prepared with loving care. Guests are spoiled for choice, but the attentive staff and the friendly owners, a married couple, are always ready to assist. After you have eaten, the high point of the evening comes: a deep draw on a water-pipe, filled, of course, with fragrant tobacco.

Schwabing

Munich
Germany
The Countess of Revenlow once said that "Schwabing isn't a place, it's a state of mind". Once home to colonies of artists, bohemians and other alternative types, Schwabing is now teeming with affluent young professionals. But don't be fooled, this part of town has many different faces. Visitors can admire the regal magnificence of 19th century Munich on Ludwigstra?e, home of the university and numerous Bavarian government ministries, while the ultra-modern, high-tech city is clearly visible in the area behind the Siegestor. If you want to strut your stuff, then head to Leopoldstraße. Lined with cinemas, bars, restaurants and shops, this is the place to see and be seen.

For some years, Tijuana has reveled in the reputation of being one of the best Mexican places in town. The cocktails, the snacks and the food are all great. Its fine reputation has a price, because you have to reserve in advance or at least grab your table early. Otherwise you will have no chance against the hoards of yuppies and law students. Even if you manage to find space, you cannot rely on being able to relax. The service is often not up to coping with the numbers and long waits are far from unusual.

Many locals are convinced that Zapata is the best Mexican restaurant in Munich. That would be one explanation for the crush. The room is cosy and not overdone. The staff are pleasant and brisk and the music drives rather than accompanies the evening, sometimes a little close to the pain threshold. You are rewarded, though, with authentic Mexican food at very reasonable prices. And if you add a delicious cocktail (or two), the evening will be rounded off in style.
