Adria

Late-night munchies
Leopoldstraße 19
Schwabing
Munich, Bayern 80802
Germany
Adria is a traditional meeting spot for those who get the munchies late. Orders are taken from 10:30a-3a. You can go for classics like pizza (from EUR 4.50) and pasta ( EUR 5.35) or try one of the numerous fish or meat dishes. The helpings are very big and the prices reasonable. Adria also does good business with its take-away service. For (1.75) you can get a lasagne, a slice of pizza or a vegetable bake to take away. Drinks cost (EUR 1).

Aficionado

Cigars aplenty
Leopoldstraße 25
Schwabing
Munich, Bayern 80802
Germany
+49 89 3308 9292
A bar-cum-restaurant with a bouncer and self-assured clientele, which sells good if slightly overpriced Caribbean food. The atmosphere is very casual and the clientele is mainly made up of 'successful' business people who come here to eat and smoke a cigar (from the in-house humidor) while discussing the latest share prices. The Aficionado has large rooms, a separate bar and a pleasant terrace on the Ludwigstraße in summer.

This restaurant offers high-class Italian cuisine in quiet and sunny surroundings. Although located in up-market Solln, it is not just a haven for the wealthy. You will look in vain for pizza on the menu: the main emphasis is on exquisite pasta and traditional main courses, with the fish dishes being particularly good. The wine list is excellent, although a bit pricey. In the summer, guests can sit outside on the sunny patio.

Asam House

Grandiose aristocratic house
Maria-Einsiedel-Straße 45
Thalkirchen
Munich, Bayern 81379
Germany
This was once the home and studio of Cosmas Damian Asam, an important painter of the late baroque period. The facade of the Asamschlößl is a rare example of the sort which was once so widespread in Munich. The painter acquired the estate in 1724, added a studio and started to decorate the facade with his work. At the time, the grounds also included buildings for the workers, a geometrically designed garden and a chapel built by his brother Egid Quirin. The house was rebuilt after the War by Schleich and the paintings on its facade restored. Quality regional cuisine has been served here at reasonable prices since 1993. The dining rooms are traditional and comfortable, comprising the Tirol Room, a lounge with a clay oven and a beautiful garden. Celebrities from the nearby film studios in Geiselgasteig are regular guests here.

Brauereigasthof Aying

Traditional brewery with good food
Zornedinger Straße 2
Aying
Munich, Bayern 85653
Germany
+49 8095 9065
The Inselkammer family has been producing a very drinkable and much-loved beer in the traditional Aying Brewery since 1878. The menu features typical Bavarian fare (including a type of bread soup) as well as a good variety of regional cuisine with an international flavor. There is a beer garden with seating for 200.

Bräustüberl Weihenstephan

The oldest brewery in the world
Weihenstephaner Str 1
Freising
Munich, Bayern 85354
Germany
+49 81 611 3004
The Benedictine monks have been brewing beer here since 1040, making this place the oldest brewery in the world. The brewery now belongs to the state, but still attracts customers with a selection of Bavarian specialties served in enormous portions (from 11:30a-10p). The beer garden offers a great view of the mountains north of Munich. An old law allows you to bring your own food, but there's really no need!

Café Reitschule

Show jumping and coffee
Königinstraße 34
Schwabing
Munich, Bayern 80802
Germany
+49 89 333402
Situated next to the university riding school, this café has the particular advantage of offering a view of the riders practising their show-jumping techniques in the riding hall. Once popular with Munich's high society, the clientele now consists of business people, yuppies and law students coming and going in a continuous stream. Good food, wonderful terraces with a view of the English Gardens, separate rooms for larger parties and, of course, excellent service.

Cafégarten

The name is deceptive
Nymphenburger Straße 92
Neuhausen
Munich, Bayern 80636
Germany
Although called 'Café-Garden', this place is not really a café and doesn't boast much of a garden. In fact, it is just one of those typical establishments found in almost every urban district, which serve breakfast until the evening, coffee and snacks the whole day, good, hearty lunches and hard drinks in the evening. The lunchtime menu normally features salads, sandwiches and pasta dishes, which taste good and are not expensive (EUR 6.50 for pasta). Small dishes such as soups are offered the whole day and cocktails are served in the evening. Unfortunately, the 'garden' is situated right by the main road, meaning that it is not as idyllic as you might hope.

Much thought has gone into the design of this restaurant (modern and simple, yet excellent) to ensure it runs with the minimum of fuss. The same high quality is to be found in the food, the style of which is difficult to summarize in one word, as it takes in the best aspects from many different world cuisines. The set menus are highly recommended, each one providing a real culinary tour of the globe. Service is top class, being friendly and competent; meals can also be eaten outside in summertime.

What a menu! This place sells crêpes filled with delicious things which take you back to childhood days; sweet, brightly-coloured and seductive. You can have them flambéd or cold with ice-cream. Sheer heaven for those with a sweet tooth! As well as sweet crêpes, you will also come across the less-familiar savoury galettes. These are stuffed with ratatouille, for example, or with a meat filling. The menu also offers a crêpe-free section, including various large or small salads, as well as a set menu with dishes like 'magret de canard aux poivres vert' (duck's breast with green peppers).

Idyllically situated near the banks of the River Isar, yet not far from the city centre, this restaurant - housed in a 19th century neo-Renaissance villa - is soberly decorated in black and white, but offers delicious French cuisine at fairly reasonable prices (the fish dishes are particularly good!). The main attraction is the beer garden, which is tucked well away from the traffic and also offers hearty Bavarian fare.

Specialising in exquisitely prepared Bavarian fish and game dishes, the food is excellent although slightly pricey. It is, however, well worth the splurge and there are beautiful views from the beer garden of Lake Starnberger and the Alps (weather permitting). But it is not the end of the world if you have to sit indoors as the interior decor is extremely cosy.

Charmingly located in Isartal, this popular Bavarian establishment serves up high-quality traditional cuisine at mid-range prices. Waldwirtschaft is known for its large beer garden (2,500 seats and a children's playground with swings), which offers local grilled specialities and live jazz and dixie bands. Some time ago, complaints from residents about the music led to the introduction of an early closing time, but local landlords organised a 'beer garden revolt' which resulted in the closing time being extended to 11p.

This small cabaret theatre in the Wirtshaus am Hart inn is situated in the northern suburbs. A dependance of the highly respected Schlachthof, the reputation of the former has stood it in good stead. As a result, world famous cabaret stars and local personalities like Eisi Gulp and Faltsch Wagoni are prepared to make the trek out to this quiet residential suburb. The beer garden is a great place to relax in summer and every Friday the tempo picks up for 'reggae night'.

Il Grappolo

Stand up for your pasta!
Adalbertstraße 28
Schwabing
Munich, Bayern 80799
Germany
It is hard to say why, but the ambiance at the Grappolo is somehow very Italian. Probably the best Italian eatery in the university district, it has small tables, where you eat standing, and the food is delicious. The pasta dishes are so good that it is worth going just for them, but the antipasti and the meat and fish dishes are equally tempting. If you can find a space outside in the summer, you will notice that there are just as many students here as business people.

Nymphenburger Straße 162
Neuhausen
Munich, Bayern 80634
Germany
+49 89 168 9241
This restaurant, situated on busy Rotkreuzplatz, looks slightly out of place: it is a low building surrounded by giant multi-storey edifices, and its beer garden borders a major road junction. Yet the minute the sun appears, this place gets jam-packed. And it's slightly hard to understand why. The food isn't great (although it is cheap); and the clientele aren't the youngest bunch either - although they do seem to like the Augustiner beer!

A traditional Bavarian pub with first-class local specialities, a beautiful beer garden with seating for 2,500, a small sun-terrace and a service station (including a pump) for cyclists. The latter tradition goes back to the days of Franz Xaver Kugler, the landlord in 1922, who topped up his glasses of beer with lemonade during the post-war beer shortage. His innovation was named 'Radler' (cyclist) after his regular customers, and the drink (half beer and half lemonade) has now become famous throughout Germany.

Another of the numerous cafés in Munich's university district, News Bar is bright and comfortable, and offers the usual choice of meals, coffee and cakes. One slightly unusual feature is the enormous selection of newspapers and magazines. It's a pity that you have to buy them, but at least this place is quiet enough to read in peace. The staff are very new-Munich and slightly arrogant, just right for the high-powered student clientele who can take the opportunity to practice the assertiveness they will need later in life.

Like many other beers, Hacker-Pschorr is now produced out of town, but is still sold in the original city-centre building, which has now been renovated after damage in the Second World War. The beer is accompanied by tasty Bavarian specialities such as roast pork. Old photographs and other bits and bobs document the history of the brewery; the Silbersaal hall and the sculpture by Johann Hauttmann (of Schloß Linderhof fame) in the foyer are well worth seeing.

What the name promises (or threatens), the Outland provides. The restaurant is fitted in the style of an outback bar, the decor is rustic and simple, and the walls are painted with symbols from the dreamland of all German drop-outs. The clientele is mixed and relaxed - how could it be otherwise in such a place? In the summer time, you can sit outside to eat. But the most remarkable thing is the menu; if you are curious and not afraid to experiment, you can choose the likes of shark steak or fillet of kangaroo.

The ambience of this Turkish restaurant is as far away as you can get from a doner kebab snack bar. It is simple and classy with salmon pink walls and dark wooden furniture. The food, on the other hand, is substantial and the portions are ample. Prices are almost embarrassingly low. This is certainly a reason for the popularity of the restaurant, where the atmosphere is pleasant and friendly and sometimes so exuberant that you can't hold a conversation. During the day, it pampers business people with two different lunch menus every day, at(EUR 4.95 and 7.90) apiece, while it caters mostly to guests from Neuhausen in the evening. Despite the small tables by the window, this is a discrete and first class restaurant with low lights and that traditional Italian ambience. The food is excellent and satisfying (very different from many run-of-the-mill pizzerias), catering for a variety of tastes.
