Some say this is Munich's best Italian restaurant. Highly decorated by Michelin and Gault Millau, Acquarello transports its guests to the world of Italian cuisine beyond pizza and chianti. Located in the upmarket district of Bogenhausen, the restaurant is perfectly situated to attract a rich clientèle. Traditional recipes are rustled up using daring new combinations. Try the ravioli in white tomato sauce or the braised beef.

You will detect a subtle French influence in the fish, poultry and game dishes, all of which are meticulously prepared. The emphasis is on traditional cuisine. Main courses start with the turbot fish being highly recommended. Only the service leaves something to be desired, but most of the patrons, who consist of business people, Munich dignitaries and the generally affluent, do not appear unduly troubled by it.

Run by star chef Fritz Schilling (with the help of another renowned chef, Eckart Witzigmann, who is a consultant here), the restaurant uses the best ingredients and offers the finest wines, which should be no problem, as this is also one of Munich's best delicatessens.

People are divided about the quality of the food: some think it is traditional Mexican fare, others think it is just mush. What everyone likes, however, are the cocktails, perhaps the reason for the Palenque's abiding popularity. It can't be the service, which is mediocre at best.

By day, it is frequented by business people and lawyers from local offices and chambers, while in the evening it attracts a mixed crowd of theatre-goers. Prices of the food reflect the high standing of the owner, Zampano Käfer, and its quality is sound. In comparison, breakfast is good value for money and is popular among students.

The food is international with a definite Mediterranean influence; the fish dishes and desserts are particularly good. The trendy, nouveau riche clientele that patronise the restaurant includes numerous TV celebrities (Bogenhausen is just around the corner). The staff can sometimes appear a little too self-important for their own good however. Hot food is available from 6:30a-3p and from 6p-midnight.
