Aroma Kaffeebar

Cosy coffee house
Pestalozzistraße 24
Glockenbachviertel
Munich, Bayern 80469
Germany
+49 89 2694 9249
This tiny cafe in the cool Bach area is loved by residents and the hip alike. Its many different types of great coffee (still served with a glass of water) and excellent homemade cakes, croissants, muffins, toasts and more. Leave no breakfast stone unturned. The friendly staff, the relaxed clientele and the simple light wood decor create a really good atmosphere, which isn't spoiled by high prices.

Baader Café

Fine spot for a Sunday brunch
Baaderstraße 47
(Gärtnerplatzviertel)
Munich, Bayern 80469
Germany
+49 89 201 0638
A firm fixture in Munich's in-scene since the eighties, Baader is a favorite haunt for writers, artists, lifestyle journalists and nightlife veterans. The decor at Baader Café (big windows, light walls and dark furniture) hasn't changed much since the good old days, but thankfully the music has moved on. The standard drink is beer (unfortunately only Löwenbräu), and tasty, reasonably priced snacks such as toast, pasta and chilli con carne are served. Sunday brunch is a popular favorite.

Bachmaier

A beer garden for bad weather
Dachauer Straße 185
Nymphenburg
Munich, Bayern 80637
Germany
+49 89 1597 0062
http://www.bachmaier-wirtshaus.de
This pub on Leonrodplatz offers original Bavarian fare "like Granny would have cooked"; and like then, the food is mainly home-made. There are numerous soups, desserts, salads, and of course, typical Bavarian meat dishes. Vegetarian food is available every day, and at weekends one you can enjoy breakfast until 3pm. This includes quark (a low fat cheese dish), jam, honey etc. at a buffet. The most notable features of this beer garden are its roof, outdoor heating and service until midnight!

Big Easy

Great food, great jazz
Frundsbergstrasse 46
Ecke Ruffinistraße
Munich, Bayern 80634
Germany
+49 (0)89 1589 0253
http://www.thebigeasy.de/
If you're looking for quality jazz performers, the Big Easy is the place to visit. A big place for tourists, the laidback ambience is a draw, where patrons order drinks and sit back to jazzy beats. Another plus is that it's child friendly, with a kids' area complete with toys. The Happy Hour from 5p-8p sees a wide range of spirits and beer being guzzled. Buffet, brunch, regular jazz events, non-smoking area, and contemporary cuisine are other attractions. Service takes long on crowded days, but after the dining experience you'll have little to complain about.

Bobolovsky's

The big breakfast
Ursulastraße 10
Schwabing
Munich, Bayern 80802
Germany
+49 89 3408 9965
http://www.bobolovsky.de/
Bobolovsky's is a café, a bar and a restaurant. This place serves the cheapest and best breakfast in Schwabing. This could comprise a huge portion of ham and eggs, followed by waffles, cornflakes, toast and jam, and a hot drink. If you're still peckish after that, you'd better start worrying! Bobolovsky's also serves a wide range of hot, mainly American and Mexican style cuisine, which is, as the breakfasts are, fabulous. The all-you-can-eat American buffet special on Monday evenings (after 8p) is a killer!

Café Blue

From early to late
Implerstraße 2
Sendling
Munich, Bayern 81371
Germany
+49 89 7466 4693
This café does resemble an aquarium with its huge windows, sixties style decor, long bar, high terrace and the music playing just a little too loud. During the day, it is full of school kids and businessmen and in the evening the younger party crowd start pouring in. There is also an excellent menu offering Asian, Italian and International cuisine.

Café Monopteros

Overlooking the English Garden
Königinstraße 51
Maxvorstadt
Munich, Bayern 80539
Germany
You will find Café Monopteros right at the entrance to the Englischer Garten (the English Garden) and it is therefore perfect for fortifying yourself after a good walk with a nice cup of coffee and a cake from the wide selection. Early birds will be attracted by the excellent breakfast menu, while there are also several lunchtime specials which provide good value for money. In short, you will find everything you could wish for, whether you want a snack or a hearty meal. The clientele varies from students to groups of yuppies who descend, mainly at lunchtime, from the many offices in the area.

Student fare
Blutenburgstraße 106
Neuhausen
Munich, Bayern 80636
Germany
+49 89 123 6288
http://www.cafe-neuhausen.de
There's a real coffee house feel to this wonderful high-ceilinged stucco room dating back to the end of the 19th century. Popular with students and locals, it is a lively night time meeting place for young people out for a few beers. Café Neuhausen is particularly renowned for its filling, value for money breakfasts, but the ambitious selection of hot meals and salads is also worth a look. The small beer garden at the rear is worth checking out in the summer.

Café Reitschule

Show jumping and coffee
Königinstraße 34
Schwabing
Munich, Bayern 80802
Germany
+49 89 333402
Situated next to the university riding school, this café has the particular advantage of offering a view of the riders practising their show-jumping techniques in the riding hall. Once popular with Munich's high society, the clientele now consists of business people, yuppies and law students coming and going in a continuous stream. Good food, wonderful terraces with a view of the English Gardens, separate rooms for larger parties and, of course, excellent service.

Kosher cuisine and chic clientele
Augustenstraße 52
Maxvorstadt
Munich, Bayern 80333
Germany
+49 89 5235 0535
http://www.schmock-muenchen.de
The stucco ceilings, elegant wall lamps and dark, wooden tables and chairs lend this café-restaurant a great atmosphere. What makes it so special is its Israeli cuisine and the kosher wine on offer. Whether there is a demand is irrelevant, it is just the very possibility that attracts you here! The clientèle is mostly very chic and stylish. Reservation is recommended in the evening.

Cafégarten

The name is deceptive
Nymphenburger Straße 92
Neuhausen
Munich, Bayern 80636
Germany
Although called 'Café-Garden', this place is not really a café and doesn't boast much of a garden. In fact, it is just one of those typical establishments found in almost every urban district, which serve breakfast until the evening, coffee and snacks the whole day, good, hearty lunches and hard drinks in the evening. The lunchtime menu normally features salads, sandwiches and pasta dishes, which taste good and are not expensive (EUR 6.50 for pasta). Small dishes such as soups are offered the whole day and cocktails are served in the evening. Unfortunately, the 'garden' is situated right by the main road, meaning that it is not as idyllic as you might hope.

Dillinger

High-cholesterol American cuisine
Hofmannstraße 19
Sendling
Munich, Bayern 81379
Germany
+49 89 7874 9022
This restaurant took its name from one of America's most-wanted bank robbers. The decor, however, is not at all American. Dillinger's is located in a lovely arched cellar hung with bright paintings. The food, on the other hand, is typically American: giant burgers, fries, steaks, everything you can think of to take your cholesterol level to new heights. At weekends it is essential to book. You can even bring your dog.

Drugstore

Everything under one roof
Feilitzschstraße 12
Schwabing
Munich, Bayern 80802
Germany
Drugstore is an understatement for this shop that has everything: a restaurant, bar, bistro and news agency. You can get a hearty breakfast from 9a-3p, have a coffee, eat lunch (business lunch 11a-3p) or just pop in for a drink in the evening. The happy hour is a must (6p-7p & 11p-midnight Sunday-Thursday) with cocktails. However, the really unusual thing about the Drugstore is the news agency, where you can buy useful things (wine) and useless things (horoscopes) until 1a. Hot food is also served until midnight.

Interview

See and be seen
Gärtnerplatz 1
Glockenbachviertel
Munich, Bayern 80469
Germany
+49 89 202 1649
http://www.cafe-interview.de
The name of this bar says it all. Located opposite the Gärtnerplatztheater, Interview's terrace is a popular summertime meeting place for Munich's in-crowd. The staff are suitably self-confident, the prices high and the cuisine excellent (Italian, of course). The extensive breakfast menu is especially good while the wine and cocktail list is not for the faint-hearted. Meals from the lunch menu are served from 10a-5p.

Leo's Lounge

Faded grandeur
Rosenheimer Straße 98
Haidhausen
Munich, Bayern 81669
Germany
+49 89 4895 3050
The best way to describe the decor is down-at-heel art nouveau. But it is precisely that faded grandeur which makes this restaurant so comfortable and cosy. The menu is contemporary and contains everything the well-traveled person could wish for. Portions are large and the prices are reasonable. Stressed out office workers can relax over a business lunch; on Mondays there is a classic American buffet, where you can eat as much as you like.

Lunis

Relaxation for stressed-out students
Amalienstraße 87
Maxvorstadt
Munich, Bayern 80799
Germany
+49 89 439 7480
An ideal place for overworked, stressed-out students. The upstairs bar (and the courtyard during the summer) is the perfect place to let off steam, while the cellar bar (the Liquid Lounge) is great for celebrating successful exam results - the room can be hired for free. The food is tasty and cheap. Burgers cost about EUR 7; main courses range from EUR 5.30-8 and pasta dishes can be had for just EUR 4 from 6p-8p M-F.

Good food in the Kunstpark Ost
Grafingerstraße 6
Kunstpark Ost
Munich, Bayern 81671
Germany
+49 89 4900 2153
http://www.nachtkantine.de
Apart from the odd snack bar, this is the only restaurant in Kunstpark Ost. It offers mainly American food, such as burgers from EUR7.25 as well as pizza and pasta from EUR4.25-6.25 - good value for Munich. The turnover of guests is high as people come and go all the time. The hectic pace is heightened by the loud techno music played by various DJs - and all this in a room for 800 people! If you're just finishing the night, then you can begin the next day here - a full breakfast is available for EUR7.

News Bar

Newspapers and marketing students
Amalienstraße 55
Maxvorstadt
Munich, Bayern 80333
Germany
+49 89 28 1787
Another of the numerous cafés in Munich's university district, News Bar is bright and comfortable, and offers the usual choice of meals, coffee and cakes. One slightly unusual feature is the enormous selection of newspapers and magazines. It's a pity that you have to buy them, but at least this place is quiet enough to read in peace. The staff are very new-Munich and slightly arrogant, just right for the high-powered student clientele who can take the opportunity to practice the assertiveness they will need later in life.

San Francisco Coffee Company

Coffee and take-aways
Nymphenburger Straße 151
Munich, Bayern 80634
Germany
http://www.sfcc.de/
Fans of the USA no longer have to cross the Atlantic to enjoy a typical American coffee shop. The San Francisco Coffee Company spreads its aromas from a corner building on Nymphenburger Straße, where it sells coffee, sandwiches and muffins. The emphasis is on the coffee, though, and its direct links with coffee manufacturers guarantees its varied but high quality range. That is why the SFCC likes to be known as the 'Coffee Place'. SFCC also has style, combining mahogany shades with light blue and orange. The staff provide friendly service American-style. Other branches: Liebigstrabe 10a (Lehel), Innere Wiener Strabe 57 (Haidhausen), Amalienstrabe 45 (Schwabing), Gartnerplatz 2 (Zentrum), Arabellastrabe 17-19 (Arabella-Park).

Crowds flocking to Sarclettis, one of the oldest and most popular ice-cream parlours in town, have been known to cause traffic chaos. No wonder! With 60 exquisite varieties like caramel, mint chocolate and sacher cake (as well as special versions for diabetics), this place is well worth a visit at any time of year. Customers can enjoy a tub of ice-cream or a sundae. The polystyrene cool boxes provided for take-aways can keep the ice-cream frozen for several hours.

Schlosscafé Palmenhaus

Exotic plants, exotic prices
Schloss Nymphenburg
Nymphenburg
Munich, Bayern 80638
Germany
+49 89 17 5309
Situated in the leafy park surrounding Schloss Nymphenburg, the Palmenhaus (Palm House) is a popular pit-stop for tourist groups by day and a favoured venue for business meetings and conferences in the evening. No wonder. With its exotic palms and cacti, and its beautiful, bright atmosphere, Schlosscafé Palmenhaus is a real oasis. The high prices are hardly surprising, although the service could in truth be better. Nevertheless, this is still a wonderful place for a romantic brunch. The building itself was erected by King Maximilian.

Schmalznudel

Early opener
Prälat-Zistl-Straße 8
Innenstadt
Munich, Bayern 80331
Germany
+49 89 26 8237
Situated on Viktualienmarkt and open from 5am, this café is renowned for its breakfast. The most popular dish is the Auszog'nen, a Bavarian speciality which consists of balls of yeast dough, fried in lard and pulled apart in the middle so that a thick ring of dough forms around the outside. The whole thing is then sprinkled with sugar. For those who are really famished, several other nourishing hot dishes are available. If you're planning to celebrate with a large group, then it is recommended to arrive early as the café and the upper floor fill up pretty quickly.

Speisecafé West is known for its great breakfast and sunny terrace. The main courses and set menus are also exceptional: a wonderful combination of international and regional cuisine, varied, imaginative, progressive and skilfully prepared. The decor and atmosphere are cosy; the clientele is made up of locals and students who sit at the bar or at the table on fine leather-covered benches. The mood is casual and intimate.

Located directly opposite the Institutes of Mathematics and Physics, Tresznjewski is frequented mostly by students during the day, but good-looking and well-dressed night revelers gather here in the evenings and for brunch at the weekend. The atmosphere in the evenings is fairly party-like and you will be served decent but slightly expensive food by the good-looking and friendly yet overtaxed staff. This pleasant corner café in the university district is a little cramped inside but is still very cosy. It even has its own little kiosk outside, where you can buy everything you need for a pleasant afternoon in the university library. Vorstadt Café sells a number of excellent pasta dishes, better than you would expect for a student establishment, and priced accordingly. The service is very friendly.

Ysenegger

Beer for breakfast?
Ysenburgstraße 3
Neuhausen
Munich, Bayern 80634
Germany
+49 89 16 2791
As with the other 'Egger' restaurants, the interior is decorated in the style of a typical old-Munich inn. The furnishings are dark and heavy; chandeliers hang from the ceiling. This is one of those typical urban bars where you can have a leisurely breakfast at the weekend, or a beer or two in the evening (Löwenbräu, Franziskaner or Guinness). The downside is that it is always busy and is often so loud that conversation is barely possible. However, in summer you can sit outside and enjoy dishes like Kässpätzle (southern German noodles) for (EUR 6.90), Penne Arrabiata for(EUR 6.40) or breakfast from (EUR 2.50-7.75). There is also a wide selection of fruit juices.
