Cocoa addicts in Munich have found the perfect haven. Make way to this chocolate shop on Reichenbachstrasse for your chocolate fix. And if your date loves chocolates, then what could be more perfect than a visit to this place. A note of caution though, Amélie can get full as there are only two seats available.

Beer brewing monks

Munich, Bayern 80333

The monks from Andechs, also known as the 'Holy Bavarian Mountain', have recently opened up a new establishment opposite the Frauenkirche in the centre of town. The beer-brewing monks have found an experienced partner in innkeeper Sep Krätz and word has got out that the new place is just as good as the old. Rainer Maria Latzte, a former Beuys pupil, decorated the ceilings with his 'Dream of the Bavarian Sky' and guests can order all kinds of traditional Bavarian fare, including a fantastic Fleischpflanzerl (meat loaf with potato salad).

Its many different types of great coffee (still served with a glass of water) and excellent homemade cakes, croissants, muffins, toasts and more. Leave no breakfast stone unturned. Founded in 1328, this used to be the Augustiner monastery's brewery - the oldest one in town. In the 19th century it became private property and was transformed into one of Munich's most beautiful restaurants, with the brewery being moved to the suburbs. The rooms, designed in 1896 by Emanuel von Seidl, have been preserved as they were. But, despite all this fascinating history, you should definitely not neglect to try the famous Augustiner beer and tasty Bavarian and international dishes. Main courses cost up to EUR 20.

Baader Café

Fine spot for a Sunday brunch
Baaderstraße 47

Munich, Bayern 80469
Germany
+49 89 201 0638
A firm fixture in Munich's in-scene since the eighties, Baader is a favorite haunt for writers, artists, lifestyle journalists and nightlife veterans. The decor at Baader Café (big windows, light walls and dark furniture) hasn't changed much since the good old days, but thankfully the music has moved on. The standard drink is beer (unfortunately only Löwenbräu), and tasty, reasonably priced snacks such as toast, pasta and chilli con carne are served. Sunday brunch is a popular favorite.

Bergwolf

Late night munchies for the In-crowd
Fraunhoferstr. 17
(Cross street Klenzestraße)
Munich, Bayern 80469
Germany
+49 89 2325 9858
The line snakes out the door all night long and party-goers in need of regenerative calories crowd the entryway hoarding paper trays of the Bergwolf's specialty, "Currywurst," a large sausage cut into bite-sized pieces and smothered in a curry ketchup sauce. Vegetarians can go for the piping hot French fries smothered in ketchup and mayonnaise, called "Rotweiß" (red/white), and those watching their waistline can order the "Jogger's" version: without mayo. If you can fight through the crowd, the back of the bar is a cozy, dimly lit setting with a larger selection of drinks, simple wooden tables, and the same yummy snacks brought right to your table—if you can find a seat. -Emily Flechtner

This old Munich institution had to move from its old home to new lodgings just in front of the Hofbräuhaus. However, the Boettner has remained true to itself and to its clientele. The old furniture was transferred and even the menu has hardly changed: traditional dishes are prepared in classical style by Frank Hartung and Wilhelm Eichinger. There is a great wine list and a lovely garden.

This atmospheric restaurant with old vaulted rooms (renovated in 1994) prepares the tasty Franconian sausages in the traditional manner, grilled on an open wooden fire and accompanied by cabbage and fresh horseradish EUR 5). No doubts about the beer being fresh either , it is tapped from a wooden barrel on-site! Other Bavarian specialities, freshly baked pretzels and Franconian wines are also served. An in-restaurant with French-style cuisine located near the Kammerspiele theater and the Opera House, this friendly place has developed into a really 'good address'. The quality is excellent and the food is extremely nutritious, although the desserts may be somewhat odd for someone who is not used to wholemeal and wholegrain food. The selection of drinks ranges from freshly squeezed juice to organic teas and coffees. Situated close to the university, Café Puck is a popular hang-out for students during the day, mainly because of its tasty salads, sandwiches and hot meals, but also to its policy of serving breakfast until 6pm. In the evening and later on, a new group of punters - tidy and well-dressed thanks to the bouncers - come to chat, drink and flirt. After midnight the place really starts to kick. Not quite as whimsical as Shakespeare's Puck - more straightforward fun!

This Vietnamese restaurant is run by a former German TV presenter, so it's no surprise to find film and TV people having a get-together here. It was recently refurbished, but they haven't gone overboard on the inside, instead opting for a modern look which can seem a bit cold at times. The food, however, is great and also healthy (plenty of fresh vegetables and fish). Traditional Vietnamese cooking rather than anything new-fangled is the order of the day. The ambience is pleasant but nothing special, with dark wood furnishings, terracotta flooring and wall tiles. It is the music which creates the atmosphere, but it is far too loud for intimate pre-dinner chats. The food is good, but not extraordinary. It is best described as basic German-Mexican. There is also an unusually wide variety of fish dishes. If that doesn't appeal to you, the meat dishes are also delicately prepared and seasoned. It comes as no surprise that the prices are somewhat higher than average. Greek cuisine at its finest.

Prices are average and the food is excellent. There is a wide selection of coffees. In the evenings, operatic arias accompanied by piano are performed by students of the Music Academy. This is very much in keeping with the rococo-style interior. One point to bear in mind is that Tambosi can fill up very quickly after performances at the nearby theatres.

This traditional café dating back to 1899 boasts high ceilings decorated with ornate stucco, parquet floors and gorgeous wooden panelling. It is a real, old-style coffee house and features classical music played on the piano or by small ensembles during the evening. The programme sometimes extends to jazz. The choice of drinks reflects the Viennese influence and the food, particularly the set menu, is tasty and varied. The clientele largely consists of students (predominantly medical students) and other trendy young people.

In spite of the Italian name, this place is well known for its top international cuisine. Chefs Joe Gasser and Gesumino Pireddu know a thing or two about satisfying their clients - not withstanding the somewhat cool ambience. The meat dishes EUR 16-32 are outstanding. Being a professional butcher, Gasser certainly knows his ingredients well! The desserts are also exceptional. The lunchtime set menu costs EUR 20; the evening menu EUR 45. Food is served until 11p.

A stylish sushi bar in the fashionable area near Viktualienmarkt. Like its larger branch Shoya at 85 Gabelsbergerstraße, this place uses the freshest ingredients and that all-important know-how to prepare its sushi. Professional knowledge doesn't come cheap however. Various types of sushi because it's high quality, its customers, many of them young and fashionable, are happy to pay the price.

Mongolian cuisine, barbecue, a huge non-smoking area, buffet, and a trendy atmosphere are among the trademark features of this restaurant. The expansive range in meat - (elk, kangaroo, springbok, chicken, beef, pork, lamb), seafood and vegetable preparations take guests by surprise as the wait staff patiently await your order with a smile. You can take a bowl and stuff it with raw meat, seafood, veggies, etc. at the buffet counter and get it cooked within 10 minutes! Beer, wines and cocktails keep spirits high. Reserve a table to avoid disappointment.

Always packed, Ododo is popular not just because of the wide selection of fondues and the enormous sandwiches. The simple interior (steel with artificial leather seating) provides just the right setting for the in-crowd. This is where the 'jeunesse dorée' meets up for refreshments during their long journey through the city at night, or where backsliders come for a chocolate fondue.

First used as a brewery in the year 1417, this place really took off in the 18th century when it was taken over by Hacker and Pschorr. Like many other beers, Hacker-Pschorr is now produced out of town, but is still sold in the original city-centre building, which has now been renovated after damage in the Second World War. The beer is accompanied by tasty Bavarian specialities such as roast pork. Old photographs and other bits and bobs document the history of the brewery; the Silbersaal hall and the sculpture by Johann Hauttmann (of Schloß Linderhof fame) in the foyer are well worth seeing.

A popular meeting place for students and the upwardly mobile. With its parquet floor, basket chairs and fans, the interior is like something from colonial times, sparse and elegant rather than cool. They do a great range of salads, Asian and South American snacks and dishes like steak and vegetable curry. Pacific Times also has one of the largest selections of drinks in Munich - try their great tasting cocktails or maybe a whisky. Car parking service: EUR 4.50

+49 89 230 9770
A glass lift takes customers from Marienplatz to the modern Metropolitan restaurant. Awaiting them is a unique Mediterranean and Asian culinary experience, plus a well-lit and comfortable bar and, best of all, a fantastic view of the city. The food is international and all dishes are extravagantly prepared, though they're not cheap. The Metropolitan is particularly well-known for its business lunches and is ideal for showing guests a different side of the city.

A real Munich institution, situated in the former Royal Guardhouse and especially popular with theatre-goers, this traditional Munich tavern fills up at the end of performances in the nearby theatres and concert houses. Try specialities such as the excellent Stuffed Stomach of Pork - it comes highly recommended. The wine-tasting bar was opened in 1950 by the Landesverband der Pfälzer in Bayern (a regional Bavarian-Palatinate association) to provide a culinary reminder of the ties between the Palatinate and Bavaria.

Something for everyone
Müllerstraße 56
Glockenbachviertel
Munich, Bayern 80469

A club with a great atmosphere, a gay bar with heterosexuals, a disco, but not too tacky - it's not easy to describe Pimpernel. The fact that it doesn't fit into any of the usual categories, however, makes it a pleasant and uncrowded alternative at the weekend. As with the punters, the music is difficult to define, with all styles played. Delicious snacks are available until seven in the morning.

Large, loud, dark, gay and well-frequented, Sausalitos is less suitable for a comfortable or intimate dinner than for large group celebrations and generally getting to know people. The food is good quality and not overpriced, but the cocktails are better and very good value. The clientele is young and consists mainly of students-the university is just around the corner. Not a place for refined gentlemen!

Once you've finally found it, you'll immediately feel at home in this bright and comfortable café. The menu offers a wide selection of dishes, with an emphasis on pasta and Mexican cuisine, at reasonable prices. The bartender is very friendly and his shots are generous. The clientele is a colourful mix of gay men and lesbian women (or was it gay women and lesbian men?). There is a bowling alley in the cellar and a small beer garden at the front.

Prälat-Zistl-Straße 8
Innenstadt
Munich, Bayern 80331
Germany
+49 89 26 8237
Situated on Viktualienmarkt and open from 5am, this café is renowned for its breakfast. The most popular dish is the Auszog'nen, a Bavarian speciality which consists of balls of yeast dough, fried in lard and pulled apart in the middle so that a thick ring of dough forms around the outside. The whole thing is then sprinkled with sugar. For those who are really famished, several other nourishing hot dishes are available. If you're planning to celebrate with a large group, then it is recommended to arrive early as the café and the upper floor fill up pretty quickly.

Traditional Normal Japanese dishes are of course available, but what makes it special is the fresh sushi and sashimi. You can even watch the impressive Japanese cooks preparing your food! A good restaurant which is frequented by business people and tourists, Weintrödler offers decent international and Austrian cuisine as well as an extensive wine list. The late-night customers mostly consist of hungry and thirsty clubbers in need of a bite to eat before or after a long night out in the city centre. This transforms the rustically decorated, somewhat quiet daytime pub into a true party den. Hot food is served until 6a!

After being bombed in WWII, the Schneider brewery was converted into an enormous, two-story restaurant. With wood floors, and long picnic tables extending 10 ft across each room, the atmosphere is always bustling with voices and laughter. Without a hostess on staff, expect to squeeze in between two other parties at a table, and then flag down a beer maiden. Boasting some of Schneider's best wheat and doublebock beers served in tall, half-liter glasses, it is easy to savor every last drop. For dinner, you can choose from mouth-watering sausages, huge vegetarian comfort platters and seafood dishes. Expect to spend hours listening to the large German fellows next to you, while sampling the many beers available. In an attempt to remember the evening, purchase a large stein or bottle of beer as a souvenir.

Zerwirk certainly makes being vegan easy! The place also doubles as a club, where trendy Munich pub-hoppers make their presence felt. If you think the staid black-and-white chairs and minimalistic decor are just as insipid as the food, think twice. The veggies are innovatively cooked and Zerwirk deserves mention for presentation and service. The non-smoking area is a delightful spot until you see the wait-staff blowing smoke rings in between breaks. Remedy: don't be a purist and you will enjoy this place.
