Bräustüberl Weihenstephan

The oldest brewery in the world
Weihenstephaner Str 1
Freising
Munich, Bayern 85354
Germany
+49 81 611 3004
The Benedictine monks have been brewing beer here since 1040, making this place the oldest brewery in the world. The brewery now belongs to the state, but still attracts customers with a selection of Bavarian specialties served in enormous portions (from 11:30a-10p). The beer garden offers a great view of the mountains north of Munich. An old law allows you to bring your own food, but there's really no need!

Forsthaus Ilkahöhe

Good food, great views
Oberzeismering
Tutzing
Munich, Bayern 82327
Germany
+49 81 58 8242
http://www.ilkahoehe.de
Specialising in exquisitely prepared Bavarian fish and game dishes, the food is excellent although slightly pricey. It is, however, well worth the splurge and there are beautiful views from the beer garden of Lake Starnberger and the Alps (weather permitting). But it is not the end of the world if you have to sit indoors as the interior decor is extremely cosy.

Olympic tower

Viewing point and rotating restaurant
Spiridon-Louis-Ring 7
Oympiapark
Munich, Bayern 80809
Germany
+49 89 3066 8585
At 287m the Olympic tower is the tallest building in Munich, just 10m shorter than the Eiffel tower. Built by the civic council in 1965-68 for the 1972 Olympics, it provides the best view of the city and surrounding area and in good weather it is possible to see as far as the Alps. It costs (EUR2) to go to the top, though it's just (EUR 1.25) for under-15s and free for kids under six. The Olympiaturm restaurant beneath the viewing platform is open from 11a-5p and 6:30p-midnight. As well as providing a stunning view, this rotating restaurant also serves very good dishes from around the world at reasonable prices.

Paulaner Metropolitan

The modern side of Munich
Marienplatz 22
Innenstadt
Munich, Bayern 80331
Germany
+49 89 230 9770
A glass lift takes customers from Marienplatz to the modern Metropolitan restaurant. Awaiting them is a unique Mediterranean and Asian culinary experience, plus a well-lit and comfortable bar and, best of all, a fantastic view of the city. The food is international and all dishes are extravagantly prepared, though they're not cheap. The Metropolitan is particularly well-known for its business lunches and is ideal for showing guests a different side of the city.

Rabenwirt

An attractive view
Kirchplatz 1
Pullach
Munich, Bayern 82041
Germany
+49 89 793 0285
Although the name of this pub, Rabenwirt, means 'raven landlord', the landlord certainly does not behave like a raven to his guests: healthy portions of traditional Bavarian cooking are served at reasonable prices. Try the likes of beer goulash at EUR 9, suckling pig at EUR 12.50 or the house speciality spit roast duck at EUR 14. The seafood is also recommended, and the lunch menu is good value at EUR 7.50. An outstanding attraction is the sun terrace, located near the guest rooms, which has a wonderful view over the Isartal. Piano music is played on Thursdays and hot meals are served until 11.30p.

Schlosscafé Palmenhaus

Exotic plants, exotic prices
Schloss Nymphenburg
Nymphenburg
Munich, Bayern 80638
Germany
+49 89 17 5309
Situated in the leafy park surrounding Schloss Nymphenburg, the Palmenhaus (Palm House) is a popular pit-stop for tourist groups by day and a favoured venue for business meetings and conferences in the evening. No wonder. With its exotic palms and cacti, and its beautiful, bright atmosphere, Schlosscafé Palmenhaus is a real oasis. The high prices are hardly surprising, although the service could in truth be better. Nevertheless, this is still a wonderful place for a romantic brunch. The building itself was erected by King Maximilian.

Seehaus

A beer and a view
Kleinhesselohe 2
Schwabing
Munich, Bayern 80802
Germany
+49 89 381 6130
Situated on the banks of Kleinhesseloher lake in the middle of the English Garden, this restaurant with adjoining beer garden is a favourite with self-assured locals, students and tourists all year round. Guests can relax with a Mass (litre) of beer for EUR5 and watch the sun slowly disappear behind the lake. If you get peckish, you can order from the restaurant menu, although this does tend to be quite pricey. Students will be pleased to know that you can bring your own food to the beer garden. Football fans may even get lucky and see the stars of Bayern Munich football club celebrating their latest victory here.
