Grandiose aristocratic house |
Maria-Einsiedel-Straße 45 Thalkirchen Munich, Bayern 81379 Germany |
This was once the home and studio of Cosmas Damian Asam, an important painter of the late baroque period. The facade of the Asamschlößl is a rare example of the sort which was once so widespread in Munich. The painter acquired the estate in 1724, added a studio and started to decorate the facade with his work. At the time, the grounds also included buildings for the workers, a geometrically designed garden and a chapel built by his brother Egid Quirin. The house was rebuilt after the War by Schleich and the paintings on its facade restored. Quality regional cuisine has been served here at reasonable prices since 1993. The dining rooms are traditional and comfortable, comprising the Tirol Room, a lounge with a clay oven and a beautiful garden. Celebrities from the nearby film studios in Geiselgasteig are regular guests here. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The student pub |
Schellingstraße 9 Maxvorstadt Munich, Bayern 80799 Germany |
This establishment has been the student meeting place for decades. The venue for many an unofficial seminar, academics, students and normal customers make for a cheery and mixed clientele. Only the law and economics departments are underrepresented - they prefer Lunis or the News Bar just around the corner. Atzinger is also known to have the best 'Currywurst' (curry sausage) in town, and the good, hearty food makes you forget all about the university canteen. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A beer garden for bad weather |
Dachauer Straße 185 Nymphenburg Munich, Bayern 80637 Germany +49 89 1597 0062 http://www.bachmaier-wirtshaus.de |
This pub on Leonrodplatz offers original Bavarian fare "like Granny would have cooked"; and like then, the food is mainly home-made. There are numerous soups, desserts, salads, and of course, typical Bavarian meat dishes. Vegetarian food is available every day, and at weekends one you can enjoy breakfast until 3pm. This includes quark (a low fat cheese dish), jam, honey etc. at a buffet. The most notable features of this beer garden are its roof, outdoor heating and service until midnight! Late night munchies for the In-crowd |
Fraunhoferstr. 17 (Cross street Klenzestraße) Munich, Bayern 80469 Germany +49 89 2325 9858 |
The line snakes out the door all night long and party-goers in need of regenerative calories crowd the entryway hoarding paper trays of the Bergwolf's specialty, "Currywurst," a large sausage cut into bite-sized pieces and smothered in a curry ketchup sauce. Vegetarians can go for the piping hot French fries smothered in ketchup and mayonnaise, called "Rotweiß" (red/white), and those watching their waistline can order the "Jogger's" version: without mayo. If you can fight through the crowd, the back of the bar is a cozy, dimly lit setting with a larger selection of drinks, simple wooden tables, and the same yummy snacks brought right to your table—if you can find a seat. -Emily Flechtner Review © 2007, Wcities |

The name is deceptive |
Nymphenburger Straße 92 Neuhausen Munich, Bayern 80636 Germany |
Although called 'Café-Garden', this place is not really a café and doesn't boast much of a garden. In fact, it is just one of those typical establishments found in almost every urban district, which serve breakfast until the evening, coffee and snacks the whole day, good, hearty lunches and hard drinks in the evening. The lunchtime menu normally features salads, sandwiches and pasta dishes, which taste good and are not expensive (EUR 6.50 for pasta). Small dishes such as soups are offered the whole day and cocktails are served in the evening. Unfortunately, the 'garden' is situated right by the main road, meaning that it is not as idyllic as you might hope. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Tasty Dinner For Two |
Nymphenburgerstr. 110 Munich 80636 Germany +49 89 42 095 2927 http://www.froschkoenig-bar.de info@froschkoenig-bar.de |
Froschkönig, German for Frog prince, is a sleek restaurant with a casual sense of humor and numerous special deals. The most popular offer is the "cuddle dinner for two," offered on every second Wednesday of the month. The delicious and lovingly prepared three course romantic dinner is reasonably priced, and makes you feel like you're in a high class restaurant in the middle of Munich. The cuisine is inventive diverse, and international, with German, Italian, French and even Mexican touches. There is a "food" happy hour for different parts of the menu daily (don't miss the enchilada happy hour on Tuesday—5€ per enchilada!) Froschkönig is a special place and a nice retreat from the chaos and high prices of central Munich.–Emily Flechtner Review © 2007, Wcities |

A taste of Austria |
Nördliche Münchner Straße 2 Grünwald Munich, Bayern 82031 Germany +49 89 649 2304 |
This place offers authentic Austrian cuisine served in a cosy, bright and tastefully rustic atmosphere. Although Austria borders Bavaria, there is a fair difference between this and Bavarian food, especially the desserts, which are much more refined than their German equivalent. However, savoury specialities such as Backhendl (roast chicken) or Tafelspitz (soured boiled rump) are also carefully and exquisitely prepared. In summer you can relax over a pleasant meal and a glass of Austrian wine in the adjoining garden. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Out of town cabaret |
Sudetendeutsche Straße 40 Am Hart Munich, Bayern 80937 Germany +49 (0)89 3186 7771 http://www.hinterhoftheater.de/ |
This small cabaret theatre in the Wirtshaus am Hart inn is situated in the northern suburbs. A dependance of the highly respected Schlachthof, the reputation of the former has stood it in good stead. As a result, world famous cabaret stars and local personalities like Eisi Gulp and Faltsch Wagoni are prepared to make the trek out to this quiet residential suburb. The beer garden is a great place to relax in summer and every Friday the tempo picks up for 'reggae night'. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Good food, pleasant beer garden |
Volkartstraße 32 Neuhausen Munich, Bayern 80634 Germany +49 89 16 1373 |
Löwengarten offers ambitious and imaginative food at reasonable prices, such as ravioli filled with perch for. Typical dishes such as wiener schnitzel and roast pork also feature on the menu. With good service, a wooden interior decorated in warm and pleasant colors and a small beer garden, this establishment is very popular in the neighborhood. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Austrian cuisine in a flower garden |
Nymphenburger Straße 24 Neuhausen Munich, Bayern 80335 Germany +49 89 123 3830 |
The cuisine is cosmopolitan, yet still displays a definite Alpine emphasis both the wine and the food reflect clear Austrian tendencies. This is a pleasant, rather small restaurant, slightly conservative, yet exceptionally beautiful in the summer when guests can sit outside in the charming flower garden. A pianist performs several times a week. Prices are not cheap, but respectable. Review © 2007, Wcities |

An attractive view |
Kirchplatz 1 Pullach Munich, Bayern 82041 Germany +49 89 793 0285 |
Although the name of this pub, Rabenwirt, means 'raven landlord', the landlord certainly does not behave like a raven to his guests: healthy portions of traditional Bavarian cooking are served at reasonable prices. Try the likes of beer goulash at EUR 9, suckling pig at EUR 12.50 or the house speciality spit roast duck at EUR 14. The seafood is also recommended, and the lunch menu is good value at EUR 7.50. An outstanding attraction is the sun terrace, located near the guest rooms, which has a wonderful view over the Isartal. Piano music is played on Thursdays and hot meals are served until 11.30p. Exotic plants, exotic prices |
Schloss Nymphenburg Nymphenburg Munich, Bayern 80638 Germany +49 89 17 5309 |
Situated in the leafy park surrounding Schloss Nymphenburg, the Palmenhaus (Palm House) is a popular pit-stop for tourist groups by day and a favoured venue for business meetings and conferences in the evening. No wonder. With its exotic palms and cacti, and its beautiful, bright atmosphere, Schlosscafé Palmenhaus is a real oasis. The high prices are hardly surprising, although the service could in truth be better. Nevertheless, this is still a wonderful place for a romantic brunch. The building itself was erected by King Maximilian. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Home-brewed beer in Haidhausen |
Einsteinstraße 42 Haidhausen Munich, Bayern 81675 Germany +49 89 47 7677 http://www.unionsbraeu.de info@unionsbraeu.de |
This establishment consists of both a ground-floor restaurant and a Bierkeller (beer cellar) in the basement - although the latter has a particularly cozy atmosphere. The highlight of the cellar is the home-brewed beer stored in wooden casks, and the bottles of beer you can take home with. The clientele is mixed - a few tourists mingle with local residents of all ages. Concerts take place during the weekend. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Hot meals until 6a |
Briennerstraße 10 Maxvorstadt Munich, Bayern 80333 Germany +49 89 28 3193 |
A good restaurant which is frequented by business people and tourists, Weintrödler offers decent international and Austrian cuisine as well as an extensive wine list. The late-night customers mostly consist of hungry and thirsty clubbers in need of a bite to eat before or after a long night out in the city centre. This transforms the rustically decorated, somewhat quiet daytime pub into a true party den. Hot food is served until 6a! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Large, bustling beer house |
Tal 7 Munich 80331 Germany +49 (0)89 290 1380 http://www.weisses-brauhaus.de/ info@weisses-brauhaus.de |
After being bombed in WWII, the Schneider brewery was converted into an enormous, two-story restaurant. With wood floors, and long picnic tables extending 10 ft across each room, the atmosphere is always bustling with voices and laughter. Without a hostess on staff, expect to squeeze in between two other parties at a table, and then flag down a beer maiden. Boasting some of Schneider's best wheat and doublebock beers served in tall, half-liter glasses, it is easy to savor every last drop. For dinner, you can choose from mouth-watering sausages, huge vegetarian comfort platters and seafood dishes. Expect to spend hours listening to the large German fellows next to you, while sampling the many beers available. In an attempt to remember the evening, purchase a large stein or bottle of beer as a souvenir. Review © 2007, Wcities |
