Just for two |
Reichenbachstrasse 16 Munich, Bavaria 80469 Germany +49 (0)89 2307 7656 |
Cocoa addicts in Munich have found the perfect haven. Make way to this chocolate shop on Reichenbachstrasse for your chocolate fix. And if your date loves chocolates, then what could be more perfect than a visit to this place. A note of caution though, Amélie can get full as there are only two seats available. For more than two decades, this has been one of the top places in town for fish, oysters and seafood. The wonderful seafood and fresh water delicacies are served in many different guises. The restaurant, situated in a lavishly decorated cellar, even has a special caviar menu EUR 27.5. Main courses cost in the region of EUR 25. The selection of wines is excellent. Fine spot for a Sunday brunch |
Baaderstraße 47 (Gärtnerplatzviertel) Munich, Bayern 80469 Germany +49 89 201 0638 |
A firm fixture in Munich's in-scene since the eighties, Baader is a favorite haunt for writers, artists, lifestyle journalists and nightlife veterans. The decor at Baader Café (big windows, light walls and dark furniture) hasn't changed much since the good old days, but thankfully the music has moved on. The standard drink is beer (unfortunately only Löwenbräu), and tasty, reasonably priced snacks such as toast, pasta and chilli con carne are served. Sunday brunch is a popular favorite. Tapas and cocktails |
Balanstraße 23 Haidhausen Munich, Bayern 81549 Germany +49 89 4800 4284 |
A very popular tapas bar which always seems to be full. The selection of tapas is vast, although you can't say the same of the tapas themselves. The sangria (which can be ordered in one liter jugs) is refreshing and tasty, the atmosphere is fun and the well-dressed locals seem up for a joke or two. The interior is restrained yet attractive, with a long bar, tables and light wooden panels. Review © 2007, Wcities |

An institution in town |
Pfisterstraße 9 Innenstadt Munich, Bayern 80331 Germany +49 89 22 1210 |
This old Munich institution had to move from its old home to new lodgings just in front of the Hofbräuhaus. However, the Boettner has remained true to itself and to its clientele. The old furniture was transferred and even the menu has hardly changed: traditional dishes are prepared in classical style by Frank Hartung and Wilhelm Eichinger. There is a great wine list and a lovely garden. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Nuremberg sausages as they should be |
Dreifaltigkeitsplatz 1 Innenstadt Munich, Bayern 80331 Germany +49 89 29 5113 |
Although many people don't know it, Nuremberg's grilled sausages also feature in Bavarian cuisine. This atmospheric restaurant with old vaulted rooms (renovated in 1994) prepares the tasty Franconian sausages in the traditional manner, grilled on an open wooden fire and accompanied by cabbage and fresh horseradish EUR 5). No doubts about the beer being fresh either , it is tapped from a wooden barrel on-site! Other Bavarian specialities, freshly baked pretzels and Franconian wines are also served. Hot meals are available until 9.30p. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fish the French way |
Rablstraße 37 Haidhausen Munich, Bayern 81669 Germany +49 89 48 7220 |
This pleasant place concentrates on fish cooked the French way. With the fish shop L'Océan just around the corner, you can be sure that only the freshest fish is served. The preparation is simple yet perfect; the fish is often served grilled with assorted vegetables. The five-course meal EUR 37 is good value and should ideally be accompanied by a bottle of the house Muscadet. Main courses cost about EUR 17.50-20. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Trendy establishment for theatre-goers |
Marienstraße 4 Innenstadt Munich, Bayern 80331 Germany |
An in-restaurant with French-style cuisine located near the Kammerspiele theater and the Opera House, this friendly place has developed into a really 'good address'. Even though the choice of dishes could hardly be described as unique, the quality cannot be denied. Italian-style pasta dishes complement classic French bistro fare like coq au vin or vegetable pie. Main courses can be had for upwards of EUR 12.50 and a special 'theater menu' is available for EUR 10. A wide range of cocktails is also available. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Frauenstraße 9 Innenstadt Munich, Bayern 80469 Germany +49 89 291 9550 |
This restaurant serves various main dishes and a large choice of side dishes by weight. The quality is excellent and the food is extremely nutritious, although the desserts may be somewhat odd for someone who is not used to wholemeal and wholegrain food. The selection of drinks ranges from freshly squeezed juice to organic teas and coffees. In the summer, the terrace offers views of the neighbouring Viktualienmarkt and is a peaceful oasis in the middle of the hectic urban jungle. Glockenbachviertel Pure |
Corneliusstr. 16 Gärtnerplatz (Glockenbach) Munich, Bayern 80469 Germany +49 89 2024 5250 |
The Zappeforster is one of the nicest cafes in the Glockenbachviertel. Delicious and simple food like paninis and salads are served up in a quirky, green-walled dining room or on the terrace that overlooks the bustle of Glockenbachviertel's central plaza, Gärtnerplatz. The coffee is delicious! In the summer, order a beer to go so you can join the crowd hanging out on the lawns among the spectacular flower gardens of Gärtnerplatz and the steps of the theater. This is a hip place to meet the crowds before an evening out in Glockenbach's numerous bars and clubs. -Emily Flechtner Review © 2007, Wcities |

Crêpes and French delicacies |
Innere Wiener Straße 32 Haidhausen Munich, Bayern 81667 Germany +49 89 480 1173 |
This traditional shop has been offering crêpes and galettes for over 20 years. With around 45 different types of crêpes, there is something for everyone. The best place to enjoy your crêpes is, of course, in the classic French atmosphere, but if there is no room left in the tiny bistro, then you can always take them home with you. Live jazz bands play here occasionally. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This once used to be a simple Vietnamese Cultural Centre, where food was also served. But this small restaurant with its charming hand-written menus has now become one of the best addresses for Asian food in town. Munich's cultural scene indeed appreciates the delicious dishes. An oasis in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the city centre. While this description may appear a little over the top at the first, considering how unassuming this place looks, with its simple bistro tables and chairs, take one look at the menu and you'll understand right away. Traditional Italian cuisine - hearty food which fills you up without emptying your pockets - is served. There are plenty of pizzas and pastas and all are highly recommended. Andalusian tavern |

This restaurant has the atmosphere of rural Andalusia - down to earth yet romantic. Just sitting here is pleasant enough, but you'll be even happier when the tapas arrive on the table. The wine racks used to decorate the restaurant can't help but tempt you to one of the Spanish wines. Whatever the time of day, El Perro y el Griego is always full, so it can get quite loud and the mood is fairly upbeat. Staff are excellent and always manage to keep on top of things despite the constant throng of customers. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This Mexican bar is famous for three things - flirting, delicious cocktails and good food. In that order. The ambience is pleasant but nothing special, with dark wood furnishings, terracotta flooring and wall tiles. It is the music which creates the atmosphere, but it is far too loud for intimate pre-dinner chats. The food is good, but not extraordinary. It is best described as basic German-Mexican. The guests are not the only interesting sight in this restaurant and bistro, however. Situated next to the so-called Revolution Palace and its Elserhalle, the location dictates the clientele: at lunchtime hungry business people flock here to eat the great midday food (e.g. carrot and orange soup followed by salmon fillet with Dijon sauce and boiled potatoes); in the evenings concert and party-goers from the neighbouring Kunstpark come here to enjoy Italian snacks such as panini and tramezzi or à la carte dishes like lamb provençal with potatoes and Italian herbs. That the clientele tends to be on the young side goes without saying, as the Matador is part of the Kunstpark Ost fun factory. It could also be due to the fact that the older generation is frightened away by the incredibly loud music. Mama mía |

This Italian restaurant has won over locals' hearts. Alongside standard dishes like pizza and pasta or meat and fish, there are also different seasonal dishes on offer every week. There is an excellent Italian wine list and the cheap lunchtime menu includes pizza or pasta and salad. Pizzas can also be taken away. In summer, guests can sit in the lovely inner courtyard with chestnut trees. You can also practice a bit of your holiday Italian as the waiters try to speak as little German as possible. Early opener |
Prälat-Zistl-Straße 8 Innenstadt Munich, Bayern 80331 Germany +49 89 26 8237 |
Situated on Viktualienmarkt and open from 5am, this café is renowned for its breakfast. The most popular dish is the Auszog'nen, a Bavarian speciality which consists of balls of yeast dough, fried in lard and pulled apart in the middle so that a thick ring of dough forms around the outside. The whole thing is then sprinkled with sugar. For those who are really famished, several other nourishing hot dishes are available. If you're planning to celebrate with a large group, then it is recommended to arrive early as the café and the upper floor fill up pretty quickly. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Here a real Japanese chef cares about the dishes. Of course there is sushi of all kinds in this nice small restaurant but there are also tasty soups and simple rice dishes. Sushi from EUR 3-10, soups about EUR 3-5. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Friendly Greek restaurant |
Jahnstraße 36 Isarvorstadt Munich, Bayern 80469 Germany +49 89 26 8337 |
Located in the district of Glockenbach, Taverna Anti is always packed, but it's difficult to know why, as the food is nothing special, just standard Greek fare. Perhaps its popularity can be put down to the landlord, who often provides free rounds of ouzo in an effort to gain customers. The mood is certainly very relaxed, and the restaurant is often open until the small hours. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Home-brewed beer in Haidhausen |
Einsteinstraße 42 Haidhausen Munich, Bayern 81675 Germany +49 89 47 7677 http://www.unionsbraeu.de info@unionsbraeu.de |
This establishment consists of both a ground-floor restaurant and a Bierkeller (beer cellar) in the basement - although the latter has a particularly cozy atmosphere. The highlight of the cellar is the home-brewed beer stored in wooden casks, and the bottles of beer you can take home with. The clientele is mixed - a few tourists mingle with local residents of all ages. Concerts take place during the weekend. Review © 2007, Wcities |
