A world beyond pizza and chianti |
Mühlbaurstraße 36 Munich, Bayern 81677 Germany +49 89 470 4848 |
Some say this is Munich's best Italian restaurant. Highly decorated by Michelin and Gault Millau, Acquarello transports its guests to the world of Italian cuisine beyond pizza and chianti. Located in the upmarket district of Bogenhausen, the restaurant is perfectly situated to attract a rich clientèle. Traditional recipes are rustled up using daring new combinations. Try the ravioli in white tomato sauce or the braised beef. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Late-night munchies |
Leopoldstraße 19 Schwabing Munich, Bayern 80802 Germany |
Adria is a traditional meeting spot for those who get the munchies late. Orders are taken from 10:30a-3a. You can go for classics like pizza (from EUR 4.50) and pasta ( EUR 5.35) or try one of the numerous fish or meat dishes. The helpings are very big and the prices reasonable. Adria also does good business with its take-away service. For (1.75) you can get a lasagne, a slice of pizza or a vegetable bake to take away. Drinks cost (EUR 1). Review © 2007, Wcities |

Exclusive Italian food |
Frans-Hals-Straße 3 Munich, Bayern 81479 Germany +49 89 79 9885 http://www.al-pino.de/ |
This restaurant offers high-class Italian cuisine in quiet and sunny surroundings. Although located in up-market Solln, it is not just a haven for the wealthy. You will look in vain for pizza on the menu: the main emphasis is on exquisite pasta and traditional main courses, with the fish dishes being particularly good. The wine list is excellent, although a bit pricey. In the summer, guests can sit outside on the sunny patio. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Tapas in the library |
Kreittmayrstraße 26 Neuhausen Munich, Bayern 80335 Germany +49 89 5235 0535 |
Billiards with Brecht? Pasta with Pasternak? How about both! This is one of the most imaginative of Munich's bars. For twenty years local people have been eating and drinking here, in the company of high and low brow literature. The walls are lined with thousands of assorted books. The annexe is very popular, having a very busy pool table. The bar is kept by a colourful trio: a social educationalist, a furrier and a faith healer and you can quickly sense that they really enjoy running their bar. This is a place to spend a congenial evening with friends. The menu features typical 'Osteria' fare with pasta and tapas. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The name is deceptive |
Nymphenburger Straße 92 Neuhausen Munich, Bayern 80636 Germany |
Although called 'Café-Garden', this place is not really a café and doesn't boast much of a garden. In fact, it is just one of those typical establishments found in almost every urban district, which serve breakfast until the evening, coffee and snacks the whole day, good, hearty lunches and hard drinks in the evening. The lunchtime menu normally features salads, sandwiches and pasta dishes, which taste good and are not expensive (EUR 6.50 for pasta). Small dishes such as soups are offered the whole day and cocktails are served in the evening. Unfortunately, the 'garden' is situated right by the main road, meaning that it is not as idyllic as you might hope. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Spaghetti Westerns |
Theresienstraße 144 Maxvorstadt Munich, Bayern 80333 Germany +49 89 25 2209 |
Eating Italian food is always a bit like being in a play or film. Cinecittà takes this literally. It is named after the film studios in Rome and, once inside, you feel as if you have been transported there. The walls are covered with photographs, posters and autographs from the world of cinema. The menu, if not quite as cinematic, is nevertheless varied and authentically Italian. There is a large selection of pizzas and pasta dishes as well as an excellent wine list. The atmosphere adds to your enjoyment and sense of well-being. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Bar in the cellar |
Hohenzollernstraße 11 Schwabing Munich, Bayern 80801 Germany +49 89 33 6639 |
A cosy bar in the cellar of Café Florian in the heart of Schwabing, Cocodrillo has been integrated into the brick vaults of the old cellar and fitted out with every imaginable luxury. In the afternoon, customers sit upstairs and drink cappuccino, but head down to the cellar for a cocktail and a flirt before heading off to a club. Although people hardly need go elsewhere for a dance, as this place can really get kicking later on at the weekend. The clientele are mostly young and well-off. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Mama mia! |
Rosenheimer Straße 30 Haidhausen Munich, Bayern 81669 Germany +49 89 4895 4099 |
An oasis in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the city centre. While this description may appear a little over the top at the first, considering how unassuming this place looks, with its simple bistro tables and chairs, take one look at the menu and you'll understand right away. Traditional Italian cuisine - hearty food which fills you up without emptying your pockets - is served. There are plenty of pizzas and pastas and all are highly recommended. Like the interior, the service is straightforward and pleasant. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Gourmet Italian |
Willibaldstraße 24 Laim Munich, Bayern 80689 Germany +49 89 5464 3737 http://www.dolcesosta.de |
A new and elegant Italian restaurant in unusual surroundings - in the middle of a residential district in western Munich. Dolce Sosta (meaning 'sweet break') is run by Gianfranco Artiaco and Giuseppe Vuoso who opened their own restaurant after having worked for a long time in other Italian restaurants. In a simple yet pleasant atmosphere, they offer beautiful fish and meat creations which belong in the realm of Italian high cuisine. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Everything under one roof |
Feilitzschstraße 12 Schwabing Munich, Bayern 80802 Germany |
Drugstore is an understatement for this shop that has everything: a restaurant, bar, bistro and news agency. You can get a hearty breakfast from 9a-3p, have a coffee, eat lunch (business lunch 11a-3p) or just pop in for a drink in the evening. The happy hour is a must (6p-7p & 11p-midnight Sunday-Thursday) with cocktails. However, the really unusual thing about the Drugstore is the news agency, where you can buy useful things (wine) and useless things (horoscopes) until 1a. Hot food is also served until midnight. Popular bar and restaurant |
Schmellerstrasse 17 Munich, Bayern 80337 Germany +49 (0)89 7474 7610 http://www.egnatia.net/ |
Known for its traditional Greek and Mediterranean cuisine, Egnatia is warm and inviting. Warm tones, a wooden decor and an airy ambience beckon you to this bar and restaurant. The simplicity of the decor is complemented by the delicious food and great wine list. Dig into various salads, pastas and main courses. Top off your meal with a cocktail or a decadent dessert like the Tiramisu or Halvas. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Mama's home cooking |
Goethestraße 41 Ludwigsvorstadt Munich, Bayern 80336 Germany +49 89 53 4185 |
An institution for all who are homesick for Mamma's real Italian cuisine! Since their own cookbook was published some years ago, it is almost impossible to find a free table if you haven't booked in advance! The ambiance is simple, yet the home-made Italian dishes are appreciated by the students and lecturers of the nearby Medical School and by members of Munich's Tuscan fan club. There is wonderful pizza, too. Main dishes cost up to and can be savored on the terrace during fine weather. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Tasty Dinner For Two |
Nymphenburgerstr. 110 Munich 80636 Germany +49 89 42 095 2927 http://www.froschkoenig-bar.de |
Froschkönig, German for Frog prince, is a sleek restaurant with a casual sense of humor and numerous special deals. The most popular offer is the "cuddle dinner for two," offered on every second Wednesday of the month. The delicious and lovingly prepared three course romantic dinner is reasonably priced, and makes you feel like you're in a high class restaurant in the middle of Munich. The cuisine is inventive diverse, and international, with German, Italian, French and even Mexican touches. There is a "food" happy hour for different parts of the menu daily (don't miss the enchilada happy hour on Tuesday—5€ per enchilada!) Froschkönig is a special place and a nice retreat from the chaos and high prices of central Munich.–Emily Flechtner Review © 2007, Wcities |

Corner shop restaurant |
St. Anna-Platz 1 Lehel Munich, Bayern 80538 Germany +49 89 2916 2525 http://www.gandl.de/ |
This former corner shop in the heart of well-to-do Lehel will surprise you with its concept: some great creative cuisine combined with a shop selling food from all over the world. The idea has certainly proven itself and people (including many business people) come flocking here. The cooking is slightly Mediterranean with an Asian touch. The prices are even cheaper at lunch - and the house wine is excellent. A small, cosy establishment. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fine Italian cuisine |
Georgenstraße 144 Schwabing Munich, Bayern 80797 Germany +49 89 129 2119 |
This is no trattoria or pizzeria but a proper Italian restaurant - a clear distinction in Italy. Italian specialities are served in a simple but stylish ambience. Great emphasis is placed on the originality of the dishes and many are unfamiliar to the average German gourmet. The set menus, priced from EUR 35, are well worth a try, and they amount to a culinary tour of Italy. The service is excellent and guests' special requests are met willingly. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Stand up for your pasta! |
Adalbertstraße 28 Schwabing Munich, Bayern 80799 Germany |
It is hard to say why, but the ambiance at the Grappolo is somehow very Italian. Probably the best Italian eatery in the university district, it has small tables, where you eat standing, and the food is delicious. The pasta dishes are so good that it is worth going just for them, but the antipasti and the meat and fish dishes are equally tempting. If you can find a space outside in the summer, you will notice that there are just as many students here as business people. Review © 2007, Wcities |

See and be seen |
Gärtnerplatz 1 Glockenbachviertel Munich, Bayern 80469 Germany +49 89 202 1649 http://www.cafe-interview.de |
The name of this bar says it all. Located opposite the Gärtnerplatztheater, Interview's terrace is a popular summertime meeting place for Munich's in-crowd. The staff are suitably self-confident, the prices high and the cuisine excellent (Italian, of course). The extensive breakfast menu is especially good while the wine and cocktail list is not for the faint-hearted. Meals from the lunch menu are served from 10a-5p. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Take away or eat in? |
Maillingerstraße 9 Neuhausen Munich, Bayern 80636 Germany +49 89 18 4979 http://www.l-antipasto.de/ |
The small delicatessen offers antipasti from the counter (various fresh cheeses, Parma ham etc.) and about 1,000 different wines from regions between South Tyrol and Sicily. Delicious hot food entices more people in for lunch, making you dream of your next holiday to Italia. The menu is small, but it changes every day. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Regional Italian cooking |
Georgenstraße 105 Schwabing Munich, Bayern 80798 Germany |
The interior of this Italian restaurant speaks volumes for the cooking - traditional and provincial, it pays little attention to current trends. The regional Italian food is an attempt to break the monotony of the German obsession with pizza and pasta. Having said that, the pastas are excellent, but any of the outstanding meat or fish dishes are highly recommended and there is a particularly good range of the latter. Add a bottle from their own wine cellar and the evening is perfect. The Italian hospitality and service are so accommodating you tend to forget you're actually just a guest. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Restaurant near Kunstpark Ost |
Rosenheimerstraße 143 Ramersdorf Munich, Bayern 81667 Germany +49 (0)89 4508 8500 |
Situated next to the so-called Revolution Palace and its Elserhalle, the location dictates the clientele: at lunchtime hungry business people flock here to eat the great midday food (e.g. carrot and orange soup followed by salmon fillet with Dijon sauce and boiled potatoes); in the evenings concert and party-goers from the neighbouring Kunstpark come here to enjoy Italian snacks such as panini and tramezzi or à la carte dishes like lamb provençal with potatoes and Italian herbs. The most unusual and original thing at Malatesta is the fact that the pizzas are prepared in front of the guests. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Gourmet Italian |
Grillparzerstraße 1 Haidhausen Munich, Bayern 81675 Germany +49 89 470 5472 |
Customers won't find anything as simple as pizza here; Gallo Negro offers a fine selection of gourmet meat and fish dishes and a choice of home-made pasta. The selection of wine is excellent, but it doesn't come cheap. The service is efficient and friendly, and the Gallo Nero has rightly earned a reputation as being one of the best Italian eateries in town. In summer there is seating for 30 in the small garden. Steeped in tradition |
Schellingstraße 62 Maxvorstadt Munich, Bayern 80799 Germany +49 89 272 0717 http://www.osteria.de |
The tradition of this Italian restaurant is such that historical figures like Lenin and King Umberto of Italy dined here in the past. Even today, it has lost none of its VIP appeal, with stars from all over the globe coming to sample the tremendous Italian cuisine in stylish surroundings. You'll be glad to know that you won't find novelty food like Pizza Hawaii here. Service is fast, efficient and friendly; the staff are only too pleased to give advice on wines. Well worth the wait |
Feilitzschstraße 14 Munich, Bayern 80802 Germany +49 (0)89 34 8470 http://www.peaches.de/d/peache... |
Peaches Schwabing is part of the nationwide Peaches chain. There is a good mix of customers, but the crowd seems to be either young or old, with not much in between. It is always jam-packed and ordering can sometimes be difficult, but once you have finally managed to get your hands on a Long Island Ice-Tea things quickly get better! The cocktails are good and not too pricey by Munich standards. If you are feeling peckish, try one of the tasty pizzas, pastas or salads. Other Peaches are located in Laim (Elsenheimerstraße 12), Neuhausen (Donnersbergerstraße 50) and Milbertshofen (Schleißheimerstraße 330). Review © 2007, Wcities |

Classic Italian cuisine |
Nymphenburger Straße 150 Munich, Bayern 80634 Germany +49 (0)89 16 8548 |
Located close to Rotkreuzplatz, Pitti is one of the district's best Italian restaurants. During the day, it pampers business people with two different lunch menus every day, at(EUR 4.95 and 7.90) apiece, while it caters mostly to guests from Neuhausen in the evening. Despite the small tables by the window, this is a discrete and first class restaurant with low lights and that traditional Italian ambience. The food is excellent and satisfying (very different from many run-of-the-mill pizzerias), catering for a variety of tastes. Some examples of its fare include Spaghetti alla Marinara and Piccata Cambarola. It is advisable to make a reservation for an evening meal. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Opposite the festival ground |
Theresienhöhe 7 Schwanthaler Höhe Munich, Bayern 80336 Germany +49 89 50 1088 |
Situated directly opposite the Theresienwiese (venue for the Oktoberfest), this bar offers a less expensive (and better) alternative to the overpriced meals in the festival marquee. It's worth coming here at any time of year, and not just during the festival, for a taste of the fine Bavarian and Italian cuisine. The chestnut tree-filled beer garden seems like a green oasis in the middle of the concrete jungle. Pizzas are available from EUR 4, and snacks such as garlic bread from EUR 2. The spare ribs at an unbeatable EUR 5.50 are highly recommended. The service is good and the beer even better. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Rama provides Munich with some of the best north Indian food. They offer a wide variety of tasty hot breads. The food, like in north India, is made of fresh spices and ingredients rather than powdered spices. Don't forget to sample their yogurt! Food is made spicy upon request. Also, they have an Italian menu to cater to the people in your group who may not have a taste for Indian cuisine. This helps especially with children! -Tulika Richter Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fresh from the wood-burning oven |
Alfonsstraße 7 Neuhausen Munich, Bayern 80636 Germany +49 89 18 3198 |
Not many people known that, 'pizza from the wood-burning oven' is a speciality of the island of Ischia. Ischia Pulcinella is the perfect place to try it, and it tastes excellent, as do many of the other dishes (some of which are not regional specialities); such as Chinese mushrooms on rucola salad for , tagliatelli with salmon for and swordfish alla Siciliana. Although this Italian restaurant is slightly difficult to find (hidden away behind a hedge), it is always packed. Guests can sit outside in the summer. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Elisabethstraße 52 Schwabing Munich, Bayern 85716 Germany +49 89 271 6355 |
There are two reasons for going to Romagna Antika; to see the backdrop to Helmut Dietl's classic film Rossini, and to sample the delights of the kitchen. Popular with stars and starlets from the film industry, the atmosphere is fairly high-brow but the food is surprisingly simple. The home-made pasta and meat dishes are particularly good and make Romagna Antika an all-round talent, worthy of a visit at any time. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fraunhoferstraße 43 Isarvorstadt Munich, Bayern 80469 Germany +49 89 202 2658 |
This Italian restaurant has won over locals' hearts. Alongside standard dishes like pizza and pasta or meat and fish, there are also different seasonal dishes on offer every week. There is an excellent Italian wine list and the cheap lunchtime menu includes pizza or pasta and salad. Pizzas can also be taken away. In summer, guests can sit in the lovely inner courtyard with chestnut trees. You can also practice a bit of your holiday Italian as the waiters try to speak as little German as possible. Authentic Italian |
Hohenstaufenstraße 2 (Schwabing) Munich, Bayern 80801 Germany +49 89 34 1779 |
The decor is simple and stylish, avoiding the typical Italian kitsch that so many places seem to like. The menu is similar - there is no German-style Italian food here, just traditional Italian cuisine with no fashionable experiments. It is refreshing to see how good simple cooking can be. Apart from the daily special (seasonal fare), Stella also has a weekly lunch menu. Most of Munich has discovered this gem, so booking is essential. Review © 2007, Wcities |
