A world beyond pizza and chianti |
Mühlbaurstraße 36 Munich, Bayern 81677 Germany +49 89 470 4848 |
Some say this is Munich's best Italian restaurant. Highly decorated by Michelin and Gault Millau, Acquarello transports its guests to the world of Italian cuisine beyond pizza and chianti. Located in the upmarket district of Bogenhausen, the restaurant is perfectly situated to attract a rich clientèle. Traditional recipes are rustled up using daring new combinations. Try the ravioli in white tomato sauce or the braised beef. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Late-night munchies |
Leopoldstraße 19 Schwabing Munich, Bayern 80802 Germany |
Adria is a traditional meeting spot for those who get the munchies late. Orders are taken from 10:30a-3a. You can go for classics like pizza (from EUR 4.50) and pasta ( EUR 5.35) or try one of the numerous fish or meat dishes. The helpings are very big and the prices reasonable. Adria also does good business with its take-away service. For (1.75) you can get a lasagne, a slice of pizza or a vegetable bake to take away. Drinks cost (EUR 1). Review © 2007, Wcities |

Cigars aplenty |
Leopoldstraße 25 Schwabing Munich, Bayern 80802 Germany +49 89 3308 9292 |
A bar-cum-restaurant with a bouncer and self-assured clientele, which sells good if slightly overpriced Caribbean food. The atmosphere is very casual and the clientele is mainly made up of 'successful' business people who come here to eat and smoke a cigar (from the in-house humidor) while discussing the latest share prices. The Aficionado has large rooms, a separate bar and a pleasant terrace on the Ludwigstraße in summer. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This restaurant offers high-class Italian cuisine in quiet and sunny surroundings. Although located in up-market Solln, it is not just a haven for the wealthy. You will look in vain for pizza on the menu: the main emphasis is on exquisite pasta and traditional main courses, with the fish dishes being particularly good. The wine list is excellent, although a bit pricey. In the summer, guests can sit outside on the sunny patio. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Cocoa addicts in Munich have found the perfect haven. Make way to this chocolate shop on Reichenbachstrasse for your chocolate fix. Beer brewing monks |
Weinstraße 7 Innenstadt Munich, Bayern 80333 Germany +49 89 29 8481 |
The monks from Andechs, also known as the 'Holy Bavarian Mountain', have recently opened up a new establishment opposite the Frauenkirche in the centre of town. The beer-brewing monks have found an experienced partner in innkeeper Sep Krätz and word has got out that the new place is just as good as the old. Rainer Maria Latzte, a former Beuys pupil, decorated the ceilings with his 'Dream of the Bavarian Sky' and guests can order all kinds of traditional Bavarian fare, including a fantastic Fleischpflanzerl (meat loaf with potato salad). A good place for an introduction to Lebanese food. Whether made of meat or vegetables, all the dishes are prepared using the finest oriental spices such as cinnamon and cloves. People on their first visit can rely on the friendly waiters to help them make their choice. Arabesk is especially popular at weekends, when a belly dancer adds a visual element to the pleasures of the evening. There is frequent live music and a 1001 Nights party once a month. Grandiose aristocratic house |
Maria-Einsiedel-Straße 45 Thalkirchen Munich, Bayern 81379 Germany |
This was once the home and studio of Cosmas Damian Asam, an important painter of the late baroque period. The facade of the Asamschlößl is a rare example of the sort which was once so widespread in Munich. The painter acquired the estate in 1724, added a studio and started to decorate the facade with his work. At the time, the grounds also included buildings for the workers, a geometrically designed garden and a chapel built by his brother Egid Quirin. The house was rebuilt after the War by Schleich and the paintings on its facade restored. Quality regional cuisine has been served here at reasonable prices since 1993. The dining rooms are traditional and comfortable, comprising the Tirol Room, a lounge with a clay oven and a beautiful garden. Celebrities from the nearby film studios in Geiselgasteig are regular guests here. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The student pub |
Schellingstraße 9 Maxvorstadt Munich, Bayern 80799 Germany |
This establishment has been the student meeting place for decades. The venue for many an unofficial seminar, academics, students and normal customers make for a cheery and mixed clientele. Only the law and economics departments are underrepresented - they prefer Lunis or the News Bar just around the corner. Atzinger is also known to have the best 'Currywurst' (curry sausage) in town, and the good, hearty food makes you forget all about the university canteen. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The Bräustuben, situated right by the Augustiner Brewery, is as yet undiscovered by tourists and the atmosphere amongst the students and regulars who patronise the pub is much more typical than at other nearby establishments. The decor is simple and rustic, the local food cheap and good, the portions generous. And if you didn't know it before, you'll notice that Bavarians love their food and drink! A great place which is suitable for everyone who wants to get know the 'real' Bavaria. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Traditional brewery-cum-restaurant |
Neuhauser Straße 27 Innenstadt Munich, Bayern 80331 Germany +49 89 2328 3257 http://www.augustiner-restaura... mail@augustiner-restaurant.com |
Founded in 1328, this used to be the Augustiner monastery's brewery - the oldest one in town. In the 19th century it became private property and was transformed into one of Munich's most beautiful restaurants, with the brewery being moved to the suburbs. The rooms, designed in 1896 by Emanuel von Seidl, have been preserved as they were. But, despite all this fascinating history, you should definitely not neglect to try the famous Augustiner beer and tasty Bavarian and international dishes. Main courses cost up to EUR 20. Augustinerkeller is the only really traditional beer garden left in the city centre and serves up big glasses of tasty beer. Thanks to an ancient law dating back to the days when Bavaria had a monarchy, guests are allowed to bring their own food; but there's really no need, as the traditional fare served here is good-value and tasty. A firm fixture in Munich's in-scene since the eighties, Baader is a favorite haunt for writers, artists, lifestyle journalists and nightlife veterans. The decor at Baader Café (big windows, light walls and dark furniture) hasn't changed much since the good old days, but thankfully the music has moved on. Billiards with Brecht? Pasta with Pasternak? How about both! This is one of the most imaginative of Munich's bars. For twenty years local people have been eating and drinking here, in the company of high and low brow literature. The walls are lined with thousands of assorted books. The annexe is very popular, having a very busy pool table. The bar is kept by a colourful trio: a social educationalist, a furrier and a faith healer and you can quickly sense that they really enjoy running their bar. This is a place to spend a congenial evening with friends. The menu features typical 'Osteria' fare with pasta and tapas. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Late night munchies for the In-crowd |
Fraunhoferstr. 17 (Cross street Klenzestraße) Munich, Bayern 80469 Germany +49 89 2325 9858 |
The line snakes out the door all night long and party-goers in need of regenerative calories crowd the entryway hoarding paper trays of the Bergwolf's specialty, "Currywurst," a large sausage cut into bite-sized pieces and smothered in a curry ketchup sauce. Vegetarians can go for the piping hot French fries smothered in ketchup and mayonnaise, called "Rotweiß" (red/white), and those watching their waistline can order the "Jogger's" version: without mayo. If you can fight through the crowd, the back of the bar is a cozy, dimly lit setting with a larger selection of drinks, simple wooden tables, and the same yummy snacks brought right to your table—if you can find a seat. -Emily Flechtner Review © 2007, Wcities |

If you're looking for quality jazz performers, the Big Easy is the place to visit. A big place for tourists, the laidback ambience is a draw, where patrons order drinks and sit back to jazzy beats. Another plus is that it's child friendly, with a kids' area complete with toys. The Happy Hour from 5p-8p sees a wide range of spirits and beer being guzzled. The name is deceptive |

Although called 'Café-Garden', this place is not really a café and doesn't boast much of a garden. In fact, it is just one of those typical establishments found in almost every urban district, which serve breakfast until the evening, coffee and snacks the whole day, good, hearty lunches and hard drinks in the evening. The lunchtime menu normally features salads, sandwiches and pasta dishes, which taste good and are not expensive (EUR 6.50 for pasta). Small dishes such as soups are offered the whole day and cocktails are served in the evening. Unfortunately, the 'garden' is situated right by the main road, meaning that it is not as idyllic as you might hope. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Bauerstraße 2 Schwabing Munich, Bayern 80796 Germany +49 89 2731 2288 |
Lovely, rustic restaurant-bar in western Schwabing. Spanish dishes are served by the friendly staff, with the emphasis on tapas, which are of only average quality. There is a good selection of decent cocktails at average prices. The young clientele consoles itself for the mediocre cuisine by creating a lively but intimate ambience, and smoking cigars at the same time (which are also available here). Casa de Tapas can certainly be recommended as a bar. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Thai cuisine without fast food |
Nymphenburger Straße 128 Neuhausen Munich, Bayern 80636 Germany +49 89 129 3190 |
An exceedingly traditional Thai restaurant, Chao Praya is the place many Munich people first encountered coconut milk, red basil and green curry. Opened ten years ago, the restaurant has managed to resist passing trends and makes no concessions to fast food or take-aways. You will have to allow some time for a meal here. Starters cost from (EUR 4.50-9), main courses are about (EUR 12). For something very exotic, try trout with ginger at (EUR 12.25). Food and ambience are in harmony, and while your tastebuds enjoy almost forgotten pleasures, your eyes will feast on dark furnishings and red-toned fittings bathed in soft light. Spaghetti Westerns |
Theresienstraße 144 Maxvorstadt Munich, Bayern 80333 Germany +49 89 25 2209 |
Eating Italian food is always a bit like being in a play or film. Cinecittà takes this literally. It is named after the film studios in Rome and, once inside, you feel as if you have been transported there. The walls are covered with photographs, posters and autographs from the world of cinema. The menu, if not quite as cinematic, is nevertheless varied and authentically Italian. There is a large selection of pizzas and pasta dishes as well as an excellent wine list. The atmosphere adds to your enjoyment and sense of well-being. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Bar in the cellar |
Hohenzollernstraße 11 Schwabing Munich, Bayern 80801 Germany +49 89 33 6639 |
A cosy bar in the cellar of Café Florian in the heart of Schwabing, Cocodrillo has been integrated into the brick vaults of the old cellar and fitted out with every imaginable luxury. In the afternoon, customers sit upstairs and drink cappuccino, but head down to the cellar for a cocktail and a flirt before heading off to a club. Although people hardly need go elsewhere for a dance, as this place can really get kicking later on at the weekend. The clientele are mostly young and well-off. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Dine in style at this elegant eatery specializing in seafood. The decor consists of overhead lighting, subtle tones and plenty of steel and woodwork. A la carte and set lunches please the palate, though not the wallet. Wines from Nahe, Baden and Pfalz rub shoulders with the Italian and French varietals. There's lounge music playing in the background as well, while television screens and a fish tank provide visual entertainment. For a hushed evening with your loved one, feel cocooned right here. This cosy restaurant is hidden away in a courtyard in the university district. The menu elucidates the many different faces of Jewish cuisine - with Arabian starters, Russian stews and Austro-Hungarian desserts, all lovingly prepared in a homely atmosphere. There is a good selection of wine from the Golan Heights and live Klezmer music on Fridays. Evening meals served until 10.30p; lunch is from noon-2.30p. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Much thought has gone into the design of this restaurant (modern and simple, yet excellent) to ensure it runs with the minimum of fuss. The same high quality is to be found in the food, the style of which is difficult to summarize in one word, as it takes in the best aspects from many different world cuisines. The set menus are highly recommended, each one providing a real culinary tour of the globe. Service is top class, being friendly and competent; meals can also be eaten outside in summertime. Crêpes and French delicacies |
Innere Wiener Straße 32 Haidhausen Munich, Bayern 81667 Germany +49 89 480 1173 |
This traditional shop has been offering crêpes and galettes for over 20 years. With around 45 different types of crêpes, there is something for everyone. The best place to enjoy your crêpes is, of course, in the classic French atmosphere, but if there is no room left in the tiny bistro, then you can always take them home with you. Live jazz bands play here occasionally. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Sweet temptation |
Isabellastraße 4 Schwabing Munich, Bayern 80798 Germany +49 89 271 0330 |
Probably the most popular crêperie in Munich, whether for sweet crêpes made of wheat flour or savoury buckwheat galettes. You simply cannot have enough of these delicious, wafer-thin treats, and you will go back for more again and again. Everything is prepared from fresh ingredients and, although Cabus is always crowded, you never have to wait long for your favourite to be prepared, whether it is a galette filled with four cheeses or a crêpe with fresh fruit and ice cream. The kitchen serves hot food until midnight. Review © 2007, Wcities |

What a menu! This place sells crêpes filled with delicious things which take you back to childhood days; sweet, brightly-coloured and seductive. You can have them flambéd or cold with ice-cream. Sheer heaven for those with a sweet tooth! As well as sweet crêpes, you will also come across the less-familiar savoury galettes. These are stuffed with ratatouille, for example, or with a meat filling. The menu also offers a crêpe-free section, including various large or small salads, as well as a set menu with dishes like 'magret de canard aux poivres vert' (duck's breast with green peppers). This once used to be a simple Vietnamese Cultural Centre, where food was also served. But this small restaurant with its charming hand-written menus has now become one of the best addresses for Asian food in town. Munich's cultural scene indeed appreciates the delicious dishes. An oasis in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the city centre. While this description may appear a little over the top at the first, considering how unassuming this place looks, with its simple bistro tables and chairs, take one look at the menu and you'll understand right away. Traditional Italian cuisine - hearty food which fills you up without emptying your pockets - is served. There are plenty of pizzas and pastas and all are highly recommended. Like the interior, the service is straightforward and pleasant. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This non-smoking Mediterranean restaurant is charming like the hosts, Angelika and Fabio. A pretty interior with warm tones invites you in, or you can opt to eat on the patio (in summer). The menu offers tilapias, bruschettas, pastas, gnocchi, polenta, and more. The winelist features some rare aged labels, and a different wine with each course truly delights the guests. On the dessert front, Date Mousse, Chocolate Torte and Lemon Sorbet provide the perfect finales to your meal. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Some of the best Anatolian cuisine in Munich! It is immediately obvious (from the taste as much as the look) that this establishment uses only ingredients of the highest quality. Its ambience is typically Turkish, with plenty of window plants, and its choice lamb and succulent seafood make a visit well worthwhile. The dishes on the changing daily menu (a choice of about five, almost all grilled) are particularly recommended. Examples include grilled 'loup de mer' with fresh vegetables and grilled baby chicken with fresh vegetables. The wines middle of the range yet tasty, and Hacker-Pschorr beer is served. The main attraction of Dilan's is its tastefully decorated premises, which immediately convey a comfortable atmosphere. The cuisine, too, is something special. If you are looking for Turkish junk food you have come to the wrong place. This is where you will find traditional Anatolian fare. In the summertime you can feast in the open air. At weekends, the mood is a little more heated because a belly dancer provides a visual treat to enhance your meal. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This restaurant took its name from one of America's most-wanted bank robbers. The decor, however, is not at all American. Dillinger's is located in a lovely arched cellar hung with bright paintings. Mexico in Munich |

Don Luca has two locations in Munich, both full of Mexican kitsch and a certain cozy-meets-mass-produced flair. Come for the well-priced cocktails, which are even cheaper during happy hour. The "Top Five" specials are always 4.90€ and include hits like the Touchdown, Mai Tai and Caipi. The food is no culinary feat, especially for those of us used to authentic Mexican food, but the Giant Pizza Special on Monday for the bargain price of 9.90€ will feed at least three hungry people, and cocktail slurpers can't complain about the Cheese Smothered Nachos or Toasty Quesadillas. Happy hour daily from 5-8p, and Mo-Th 11p-closing. A second Don Luca is located at Morassistrasse 2. See website for more details. Olé! -Emily Flechtner Review © 2007, Wcities |

Located in a lovely vaulted cellar near the English Garden, this is one of Munich's oldest (1965) Spanish restaurants. Don Quijote concentrates on traditional Spanish cooking without attempting to create anything fashionable. Everything under one roof |
Feilitzschstraße 12 Schwabing Munich, Bayern 80802 Germany drugstoresaffari@aol.com |
Drugstore is an understatement for this shop that has everything: a restaurant, bar, bistro and news agency. You can get a hearty breakfast from 9a-3p, have a coffee, eat lunch (business lunch 11a-3p) or just pop in for a drink in the evening. The happy hour is a must (6p-7p & 11p-midnight Sunday-Thursday) with cocktails. However, the really unusual thing about the Drugstore is the news agency, where you can buy useful things (wine) and useless things (horoscopes) until 1a. Hot food is also served until midnight. This restaurant has the atmosphere of rural Andalusia - down to earth yet romantic. Just sitting here is pleasant enough, but you'll be even happier when the tapas arrive on the table. The wine racks used to decorate the restaurant can't help but tempt you to one of the Spanish wines. Whatever the time of day, El Perro y el Griego is always full, so it can get quite loud and the mood is fairly upbeat. Staff are excellent and always manage to keep on top of things despite the constant throng of customers. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A typical Tex-Mex bar, Enchilada has become particularly renowned for its hectic party atmosphere. The clientele is mixed but mostly young. People start the evening with a bang at happy hour (5p-8p) and then continue through to 11pm, when the 'margarita hour' starts. Rumour has it that the food isn't bad either, but you have to be a certain type to want to tuck into your fajitas for EUR 12.50 while teeny-boppers scream and dance. Kapuzinerstraße 39 Isarvorstadt Munich, Bayern 80469 Germany |
Quotations by Lao Tse inside the menu, comfortable couches, spaciously placed tables, asiatic food, chinese tea, a great variety of rum and whiskey and fully filled up cocktail glasses - the Hong Kong Bar. Not as fast as the former colony of the crown. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fusion food |
Maximiliansplatz 5 Innenstadt Munich, Bayern 80333 Germany +49 89 5502 9741 |
Werner Hunsinger has found a prominent location for his restaurant - in the 'Aubergine' - where Eckart Witzigmann 'reinvented' modern German cuisine. This tradition has been continued, and Hunsinger Pacific serves up daring combinations known as fusion cuisine. The results are spectacular. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Superb Bavarian folk theatre |
Wilhelm-Leibl-Straße 22 Solln Munich, Bayern 81479 Germany +49 89 79 4214 iberl@aol.com |
The cosy ambience of Georg Maier's Iberl-Bühne has been Munich's best venue for down-to-earth Bavarian folk theatre since 1966. There are performances here every evening from 8pm, most of them penned by Maier himself. The reputation of these shows, such as Grattleroper, stretches way beyond Munich. Food and drink is an essential part of Bavarian hospitality, and nowhere less than in this sort of theatre. Attached to the one hundred seater theatre is a wonderful old Bavarian pub with a beer garden. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fine Italian cuisine |
Georgenstraße 144 Schwabing Munich, Bayern 80797 Germany +49 89 129 2119 |
This is no trattoria or pizzeria but a proper Italian restaurant - a clear distinction in Italy. Italian specialities are served in a simple but stylish ambience. Great emphasis is placed on the originality of the dishes and many are unfamiliar to the average German gourmet. The set menus, priced from EUR 35, are well worth a try, and they amount to a culinary tour of Italy. The service is excellent and guests' special requests are met willingly. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Stand up for your pasta! |
Adalbertstraße 28 Schwabing Munich, Bayern 80799 Germany |
It is hard to say why, but the ambiance at the Grappolo is somehow very Italian. Probably the best Italian eatery in the university district, it has small tables, where you eat standing, and the food is delicious. The pasta dishes are so good that it is worth going just for them, but the antipasti and the meat and fish dishes are equally tempting. If you can find a space outside in the summer, you will notice that there are just as many students here as business people. Review © 2007, Wcities |

See and be seen |
Gärtnerplatz 1 Glockenbachviertel Munich, Bayern 80469 Germany +49 89 202 1649 http://www.cafe-interview.de |
The name of this bar says it all. Located opposite the Gärtnerplatztheater, Interview's terrace is a popular summertime meeting place for Munich's in-crowd. The staff are suitably self-confident, the prices high and the cuisine excellent (Italian, of course). The extensive breakfast menu is especially good while the wine and cocktail list is not for the faint-hearted. Meals from the lunch menu are served from 10a-5p. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Small, charming brewery |
Kreuzeckstraße 23 Großhesselohe Munich, Bayern 82049 Germany +49 89 79 8961 http://www.isarbraeu.de/ info@isarbraeu.de |
This small brewery, opened in an old train station, offers simple, traditional, Bavarian cuisine as well as every Bavarian's staple liquid diet: Weissbier (yeast beer). Another speciality which is highly recommended is the roast pork in beer. The staff are friendly in a typical Bavarian kind of way; tours of the brewery can be arranged by prior appointment. Scottish drinks, English atmosphere and French cuisine |
Thierschstraße 14 Munich, Bayern 80538 Germany +49 89 2916 3700 islaybar@yahoo.de |
This exclusive bar and restaurant is situated in the upmarket district of Lehel. The wooden tables, leather seats, dark wooden bar and pleasant lighting combine to create a cozy, club-like atmosphere. There is a huge selection of malt whisky (the bar staff can help you choose) and the restaurant offers high-quality French and international crossover cuisine. The service is excellent; the clientele well-heeled and sociable. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Somewhat out of place |
Nymphenburger Straße 162 Neuhausen Munich, Bayern 80634 Germany +49 89 168 9241 |
This restaurant, situated on busy Rotkreuzplatz, looks slightly out of place: it is a low building surrounded by giant multi-storey edifices, and its beer garden borders a major road junction. Yet the minute the sun appears, this place gets jam-packed. And it's slightly hard to understand why. The food isn't great (although it is cheap); and the clientele aren't the youngest bunch either - although they do seem to like the Augustiner beer! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Small and spicy |
Seitzstraße 13 Lehel Munich, Bayern 80538 Germany |
A small and friendly Indian restaurant which feels a bit like a sitting room. Jeeta's specialises in original north Indian Punjab cuisine and the chef is renowned throughout Munich for the magic he works with the spices. There is also a wide selection of tandoori meat and vegetable dishes, cooked over charcoal in the tandoor and brought to the table in a steaming dish. Every dish has its own individual mix of spices; even the lassi is especially good. Each guest is greeted as if they were an old friend and the service is impeccable. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Flirting Mexican style |
Buttermelcherstraße 17 Isarvorstadt Munich, Bayern 80469 Germany +49 89 22 6463 http://www.joepenas.de/ |
This Mexican bar is famous for three things - flirting, delicious cocktails and good food. In that order. The ambience is pleasant but nothing special, with dark wood furnishings, terracotta flooring and wall tiles. It is the music which creates the atmosphere, but it is far too loud for intimate pre-dinner chats. The food is good, but not extraordinary. It is best described as basic German-Mexican. Perhaps we had better move on to the cocktails. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Haidhausen's American cocktail bar |
Breisacher Str 18 Haidhausen Munich, Bayern 81667 Germany +49 89 448 0044 |
Juleps not only has the best cocktail list in Haidhausen but also offers exquisite American-Mexican food. Dark, loud, comfortable and furnished with small tables, rough brick walls and a long bar, it is surprising to find that most of the clientele are stylish young business people. The service is very good, the staff polite and the atmosphere pleasant. An American-style parking service is available. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Flirt with the rich and famous |
Utzschneiderstraße 1 Innenstadt Munich, Bayern 80469 Germany +49 89 260 3584 http://www.kays-bistro.de |
The film and art scene in Munich would be all the poorer without Kai Wörsching's fantastic restaurant, a place which brings the famous and the wannabee-famous together. The guests are not the only interesting sight in this restaurant and bistro, however. The decor is equally impressive and is changed every few weeks to reflect a certain theme; the cooking is adapted accordingly. With all this glitz and glamour, it's also a good place to come just for a drink and possibly get to know the man or woman of your dreams. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Big portions for big men |
Heinrich-Wieland-Straße 11 Berg am Laim Munich, Bayern 81735 Germany +49 89 40 7898 |
The Dicker Mann (The Fat Man) is true to its name and serves up enormous portions suitable for the hungriest of men. If you're not a big eater, you might be better off sharing your meal with someone else. The extensive menu offers vegetarian dishes and salads as well as Bavarian specialties. The interior is rustically decorated and is frequented by business people from the surrounding offices as well as food enthusiasts in the evenings. There is a medium-sized beer garden (400 seats), and hot food is available until midnight. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Trendy and stylish |
Fraunhoferstraße 13 Glockenbachviertel Munich, Bayern 80469 Germany +49 89 260 8518 http://www.kleinschmidtz.de/ |
This up-and-coming restaurant attracts some of the trendiest people in the city, so customers may have to wait a while for a table and kill time in the foyer with a complementary prosecco. Once shown to a seat though, you will revel in the stylish and relaxing atmosphere. The meals are fairly light, with French and Italian influences. The wine list meets the highest expectations, as does the service, which is friendly and efficient. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Geared towards cyclists |
Linienstraße 93 Deisenhofen Munich, Bayern 82041 Germany +49 89 613 9010 |
A traditional Bavarian pub with first-class local specialities, a beautiful beer garden with seating for 2,500, a small sun-terrace and a service station (including a pump) for cyclists. The latter tradition goes back to the days of Franz Xaver Kugler, the landlord in 1922, who topped up his glasses of beer with lemonade during the post-war beer shortage. His innovation was named 'Radler' (cyclist) after his regular customers, and the drink (half beer and half lemonade) has now become famous throughout Germany. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Modern Thai cuisine |
Amalienstraße 81 Maxvorstadt Munich, Bayern 80799 Germany +49 89 28 3700 |
Asian restaurants don't have to be crowded with kitschy furnishings, as this place proves with its simple, modern design. Popular with students from the nearby university, Kun Tuk serves up excellent Thai meals made from fresh ingredients. Soups cost up to EUR 5, main courses EUR 10.50. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Tradition and innovation |
Kistlerhofstraße 111 Sendling Munich, Bayern 81379 Germany +49 89 784 9964 |
The philosophy at Kyano's is that tradition does not have to be left to gather dust, but that it can be adapted to modern tastes. This is reflected in the cuisine, based on old recipes but enhanced with innovative ideas. The decor is modern and Mediterranean, a far cry from the fishing nets and plaster-cast Aphrodites which decorate many other Greek places. A special feature is that the guest is shown their piece of fish or meat before it is cooked. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Lively local taverna |
Wilderich-Lang-Straße 10 Neuhausen Munich, Bayern 80634 Germany +49 89 16 2633 http://www.taverne-kyklos.de info@taverne-kyklos.de |
This Greek taverna is typical for the district of Neuhausen. Hellenic favorites like grilled meat and ouzo are all served in a pleasant and comfortable setting. Portions are more than ample, especially bearing in mind the low prices. Friday evenings feature live Greek folk music which fits in well with the lively but relaxing atmosphere. Meals can be eaten outside in summer - great for families, as there is a children's play area next door. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The best of Greek cuisine |
Theresienstraße 17 Maxvorstadt Munich, Bayern 80333 Germany |
You have your first surprise when you go into Kápari and see an entire wall covered with shelves of brightly colored bottles. The second surprise lies in the menu. Its contents bear little relation to the usual Greek restaurant fare. The selection of starters itself is a voyage of discovery into a cuisine with a difference. There is also an unusually wide variety of fish dishes. If that doesn't appeal to you, the meat dishes are also delicately prepared and seasoned. It comes as no surprise that the prices are somewhat higher than average. Greek cuisine at its finest. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Deli restaurant |
Prinzregentenstraße 73 Bogenhausen Munich, Bayern 81675 Germany +49 89 4168247 |
The flagship of the Käfer food concern is its delicatessen-cum-restaurant in Bogenhausen. Run by star chef Fritz Schilling (with the help of another renowned chef, Eckart Witzigmann, who is a consultant here), the restaurant uses the best ingredients and offers the finest wines, which should be no problem, as this is also one of Munich's best delicatessens. Park and beer garden |
Hirschgarten 1 Nymphenburg Munich, Bayern 80993 Germany +49 89 17 2591 http://www.hirschgarten.de/ restaurant@hirschgarten.de |
Hirschgarten was originally a game enclosure built by the Elector Karl Theodor at the end of the eighteenth century. A small part of the historic enclosure has been preserved and can be seen from the beer garden. With 8,000 seats, the beer garden is the biggest in the city, and is also one of the most pleasant because of its peaceful location and numerous chestnut trees. It is not one of the most traditional though- beer has never been brewed or stored here, and it was only converted from a hunting house to a restaurant in 1970, when the garden was also built. This is, as is usual, a self-service beer garden, and you'll have to wash your beer glass yourself before getting a refill! Review © 2007, Wcities |

The location alone is overwhelming, attached to Hotel Königshof, the restaurant overlooks lively Karlsplatz (Stachus) and the city centre. The decor is elegant and refined, and the first-rate international cuisine well and truly lives up to expectations. As you would expect from a top class restaurant, the wine list is comprehensive and guests make their selection from an impressively stocked wine cellar. The service is impeccable, both attentive and discreet. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Take away or eat in? |
Maillingerstraße 9 Neuhausen Munich, Bayern 80636 Germany +49 89 18 4979 http://www.l-antipasto.de/ Lantipastonuovo@aol.com |
The small delicatessen offers antipasti from the counter (various fresh cheeses, Parma ham etc.) and about 1,000 different wines from regions between South Tyrol and Sicily. Delicious hot food entices more people in for lunch, making you dream of your next holiday to Italia. The menu is small, but it changes every day. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Regional Italian cooking |
Georgenstraße 105 Schwabing Munich, Bayern 80798 Germany |
The interior of this Italian restaurant speaks volumes for the cooking - traditional and provincial, it pays little attention to current trends. The regional Italian food is an attempt to break the monotony of the German obsession with pizza and pasta. Having said that, the pastas are excellent, but any of the outstanding meat or fish dishes are highly recommended and there is a particularly good range of the latter. Add a bottle from their own wine cellar and the evening is perfect. The Italian hospitality and service are so accommodating you tend to forget you're actually just a guest. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Tapas and soul |
Leopoldstraße 49 Schwabing Munich, Bayern 80802 Germany +49 89 34 4949 http://www.lardy.de |
Once you've got past the bouncer and head into this stylish establishment, the sound of the music will hit you instantly. A variety of food including tapas, pasta and other Spanish dishes is available, not all of which goes that well with the wide range of cocktails on offer. It is pleasant outside in summertime and the crowd often spills onto the pavement as a result. Its chic, well-off clientele make for an exciting atmosphere with a good deal of flirting in the evenings. Warm food is served until midnight; prices are above average. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Extremely comfortable and rustically decorated, this pub mocks Bavarian religious devotion with its ironic pictures of Jesus on the walls - and this in one of the world's oldest cultural cities! If the only the Bavarian prime minister knew about this! Last Supper offers a selection of international dishes - which hopefully won't be your last - including good steaks and a fine fish stew, as well as a great wine list. The atmosphere is informal and lively. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Faded grandeur |
Rosenheimer Straße 98 Haidhausen Munich, Bayern 81669 Germany +49 89 4895 3050 leoslounge@aol.com |
The best way to describe the decor is down-at-heel art nouveau. But it is precisely that faded grandeur which makes this restaurant so comfortable and cosy. The menu is contemporary and contains everything the well-traveled person could wish for. Portions are large and the prices are reasonable. Stressed out office workers can relax over a business lunch; on Mondays there is a classic American buffet, where you can eat as much as you like. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Well done lambs |
Ysenburgstrasse 13 Munich, Bayern 80634 Germany +49 (0)89 1271 0777 http://www.restaurant-letoon.de/ info@restaurant-letoon.de |
The no-fuss decor of the restaurant doesn't bother much once you get to the food. Succulent dishes of lamb, chicken, and seafood arrive in generous portions. The vegetables are well done and savory too. The friendly staff is prompt and multilingual. The bar is well stocked and the drinks are reasonably priced. If you find the interiors too stuffy, be seated in the terrace area. But in spite of a large seating area, the place gets crowded. Letoon is best visited with a good mood and a large appetite. Portuguese flair |

One of the most popular meeting points in Haidhausen, in the eastern part of the city, the Lisbon is both a long bar with an extensive cocktail list and a restaurant with a range of thoughtful (and not too pricey) Portuguese and international dishes. An attractive clientele, subdued lighting, candles on the tables and loud music combine to create an ambience which is both intimate and lively. On special occasions (Brazilian football matches), there are sometimes even Samba dancers. Reservations are imperative, especially at weekends. Review © 2007, Wcities |
