No inferno! |
Dantestr 16 Moosach Munich, Bayern 80637 Germany +49 89 1591 9870 |
This restaurant is a firm favorite for larger groups, so bring all your friends and family. The menu consists of Bavarian delicacies, the specialty of the house is the beer goulash with knödeln (dumplings). The desserts, like the old-fashioned apple strudel with ice-cream, for example, are to die for. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Tapas in the library |
Kreittmayrstraße 26 Neuhausen Munich, Bayern 80335 Germany +49 89 5235 0535 |
Billiards with Brecht? Pasta with Pasternak? How about both! This is one of the most imaginative of Munich's bars. For twenty years local people have been eating and drinking here, in the company of high and low brow literature. The walls are lined with thousands of assorted books. The annexe is very popular, having a very busy pool table. The bar is kept by a colourful trio: a social educationalist, a furrier and a faith healer and you can quickly sense that they really enjoy running their bar. This is a place to spend a congenial evening with friends. The menu features typical 'Osteria' fare with pasta and tapas. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A beer garden for bad weather |
Dachauer Straße 185 Nymphenburg Munich, Bayern 80637 Germany +49 89 1597 0062 http://www.bachmaier-wirtshaus.de |
This pub on Leonrodplatz offers original Bavarian fare "like Granny would have cooked"; and like then, the food is mainly home-made. There are numerous soups, desserts, salads, and of course, typical Bavarian meat dishes. Vegetarian food is available every day, and at weekends one you can enjoy breakfast until 3pm. This includes quark (a low fat cheese dish), jam, honey etc. at a buffet. The most notable features of this beer garden are its roof, outdoor heating and service until midnight! Indonesian, Vietnamese and Chinese |
Albrechtstraße 39 Neuhausen Munich, Bayern 80636 Germany +49 89 18 1666 |
The atmosphere isn't particularly exciting and the furnishings not exceptionally attractive, but anyone who enjoys really good Asian food should pay a visit to this unobtrusive restaurant. It is reputed to be the oldest Indonesian restaurant in Munich (since 1966), and offers tasty ethnic fare, although the choice of dishes is not as broad as in other Asian restaurants. Each of the three aforementioned countries are represented. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Great food, great jazz |

If you're looking for quality jazz performers, the Big Easy is the place to visit. A big place for tourists, the laidback ambience is a draw, where patrons order drinks and sit back to jazzy beats. Another plus is that it's child friendly, with a kids' area complete with toys. The Happy Hour from 5p-8p sees a wide range of spirits and beer being guzzled. Buffet, brunch, regular jazz events, non-smoking area, and contemporary cuisine are other attractions. Service takes long on crowded days, but after the dining experience you'll have little to complain about. Review © 2007, Wcities |

An Austrian in Munich |
Schulstraße 9 Neuhausen Munich, Bayern 80634 Germany +49 89 16 4238 |
The choice here is extremely limited - just one five-course menu a day - but don't be alarmed; the menu is exceedingly well thought out and exquisitely prepared. The cuisine is solid and hearty rather than fine. Classic southern German and Austrian ingredients are often combined in a novel fashion: beetroot, cooked meat, carp and offal. There is also an enormous variety of Austrian wines. There is a special fish menu once a month. Meals are served until 10p. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Student fare |
Blutenburgstraße 106 Neuhausen Munich, Bayern 80636 Germany +49 89 123 6288 http://www.cafe-neuhausen.de |
There's a real coffee house feel to this wonderful high-ceilinged stucco room dating back to the end of the 19th century. Popular with students and locals, it is a lively night time meeting place for young people out for a few beers. Café Neuhausen is particularly renowned for its filling, value for money breakfasts, but the ambitious selection of hot meals and salads is also worth a look. The small beer garden at the rear is worth checking out in the summer. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The name is deceptive |
Nymphenburger Straße 92 Neuhausen Munich, Bayern 80636 Germany |
Although called 'Café-Garden', this place is not really a café and doesn't boast much of a garden. In fact, it is just one of those typical establishments found in almost every urban district, which serve breakfast until the evening, coffee and snacks the whole day, good, hearty lunches and hard drinks in the evening. The lunchtime menu normally features salads, sandwiches and pasta dishes, which taste good and are not expensive (EUR 6.50 for pasta). Small dishes such as soups are offered the whole day and cocktails are served in the evening. Unfortunately, the 'garden' is situated right by the main road, meaning that it is not as idyllic as you might hope. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Thai cuisine without fast food |
Nymphenburger Straße 128 Neuhausen Munich, Bayern 80636 Germany +49 89 129 3190 |
An exceedingly traditional Thai restaurant, Chao Praya is the place many Munich people first encountered coconut milk, red basil and green curry. Opened ten years ago, the restaurant has managed to resist passing trends and makes no concessions to fast food or take-aways. You will have to allow some time for a meal here. Starters cost from (EUR 4.50-9), main courses are about (EUR 12). For something very exotic, try trout with ginger at (EUR 12.25). Food and ambience are in harmony, and while your tastebuds enjoy almost forgotten pleasures, your eyes will feast on dark furnishings and red-toned fittings bathed in soft light. Sweet and savoury |
Andreestraße 10 Munich, Bayern 80634 Germany +49 (0)89 167 9104 |
What a menu! This place sells crêpes filled with delicious things which take you back to childhood days; sweet, brightly-coloured and seductive. You can have them flambéd or cold with ice-cream. Sheer heaven for those with a sweet tooth! As well as sweet crêpes, you will also come across the less-familiar savoury galettes. These are stuffed with ratatouille, for example, or with a meat filling. The menu also offers a crêpe-free section, including various large or small salads, as well as a set menu with dishes like 'magret de canard aux poivres vert' (duck's breast with green peppers). Lively Anatolian |
Jutastraße 5 Neuhausen Munich, Bayern 80636 Germany +49 89 123 5454 http://www.restaurant-dersim.de ali@restaurant-dersim.de |
Some of the best Anatolian cuisine in Munich! It is immediately obvious (from the taste as much as the look) that this establishment uses only ingredients of the highest quality. Its ambience is typically Turkish, with plenty of window plants, and its choice lamb and succulent seafood make a visit well worthwhile. The dishes on the changing daily menu (a choice of about five, almost all grilled) are particularly recommended. Examples include grilled 'loup de mer' with fresh vegetables and grilled baby chicken with fresh vegetables. The wines middle of the range yet tasty, and Hacker-Pschorr beer is served. Party, party, party |
Gabelsbergerstraße 97 Maxvorstadt Munich, Bayern 80333 Germany +49 89 52 2297 http://www.enchilada.de |
A typical Tex-Mex bar, Enchilada has become particularly renowned for its hectic party atmosphere. The clientele is mixed but mostly young. People start the evening with a bang at happy hour (5p-8p) and then continue through to 11pm, when the 'margarita hour' starts. Rumour has it that the food isn't bad either, but you have to be a certain type to want to tuck into your fajitas for EUR 12.50 while teeny-boppers scream and dance. Your time is better spent flirting. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Artilleriestraße 5 Neuhausen Munich, Bayern 80636 Germany +49 89 18 7997 |
This place looks and feels like a local pub. Founded collectively by five individuals, the name of the bar ('Happy and Lively') indicates that they want people to have fun here. This bar is still run by same five and is popular with locals who come here to watch football over a beer or a glass of Spanish wine or a plate of tapas. Guests can sit outside in the summer. Froh&Munter is not tied to any particular brewery. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Tasty Dinner For Two |
Nymphenburgerstr. 110 Munich 80636 Germany +49 89 42 095 2927 http://www.froschkoenig-bar.de info@froschkoenig-bar.de |
Froschkönig, German for Frog prince, is a sleek restaurant with a casual sense of humor and numerous special deals. The most popular offer is the "cuddle dinner for two," offered on every second Wednesday of the month. The delicious and lovingly prepared three course romantic dinner is reasonably priced, and makes you feel like you're in a high class restaurant in the middle of Munich. The cuisine is inventive diverse, and international, with German, Italian, French and even Mexican touches. There is a "food" happy hour for different parts of the menu daily (don't miss the enchilada happy hour on Tuesday—5€ per enchilada!) Froschkönig is a special place and a nice retreat from the chaos and high prices of central Munich.–Emily Flechtner Review © 2007, Wcities |

Somewhat out of place |
Nymphenburger Straße 162 Neuhausen Munich, Bayern 80634 Germany +49 89 168 9241 |
This restaurant, situated on busy Rotkreuzplatz, looks slightly out of place: it is a low building surrounded by giant multi-storey edifices, and its beer garden borders a major road junction. Yet the minute the sun appears, this place gets jam-packed. And it's slightly hard to understand why. The food isn't great (although it is cheap); and the clientele aren't the youngest bunch either - although they do seem to like the Augustiner beer! Review © 2007, Wcities |

This Greek taverna is typical for the district of Neuhausen. Hellenic favorites like grilled meat and ouzo are all served in a pleasant and comfortable setting. Portions are more than ample, especially bearing in mind the low prices. Friday evenings feature live Greek folk music which fits in well with the lively but relaxing atmosphere. Meals can be eaten outside in summer - great for families, as there is a children's play area next door. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Park and beer garden |
Hirschgarten 1 Nymphenburg Munich, Bayern 80993 Germany +49 89 17 2591 http://www.hirschgarten.de/ restaurant@hirschgarten.de |
Hirschgarten was originally a game enclosure built by the Elector Karl Theodor at the end of the eighteenth century. A small part of the historic enclosure has been preserved and can be seen from the beer garden. With 8,000 seats, the beer garden is the biggest in the city, and is also one of the most pleasant because of its peaceful location and numerous chestnut trees. It is not one of the most traditional though- beer has never been brewed or stored here, and it was only converted from a hunting house to a restaurant in 1970, when the garden was also built. This is, as is usual, a self-service beer garden, and you'll have to wash your beer glass yourself before getting a refill! Review © 2007, Wcities |

The no-fuss decor of the restaurant doesn't bother much once you get to the food. Succulent dishes of lamb, chicken, and seafood arrive in generous portions. The vegetables are well done and savory too. The friendly staff is prompt and multilingual. The bar is well stocked and the drinks are reasonably priced. If you find the interiors too stuffy, be seated in the terrace area. But in spite of a large seating area, the place gets crowded. Letoon is best visited with a good mood and a large appetite. Austrian cuisine in a flower garden |

The cuisine is cosmopolitan, yet still displays a definite Alpine emphasis both the wine and the food reflect clear Austrian tendencies. This is a pleasant, rather small restaurant, slightly conservative, yet exceptionally beautiful in the summer when guests can sit outside in the charming flower garden. A pianist performs several times a week. Prices are not cheap, but respectable. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Oriental magic |
Dachauer Straße 78 Neuhausen Munich, Bayern 80335 Germany +49 89 52 7910 |
According to some, behind this building's unassuming facade lies one of the best oriental restaurants in Munich. Once inside, there's certainly a surprise in store, with stylish carpeted walls and indoor fountains, perhaps a little tacky at first if you're not used to it. The dishes are typically oriental, i.e. pleasantly spicy, and come served with a variety of different types of rice. There isn't a vast choice, but everything is freshly prepared. Try giving the beer a miss for a change and asking staff, ever helpful and obliging, to get you a tea to match your meal. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Turkish food in a classy ambience |
Volkartstraße 24 Neuhausen Munich, Bayern 80634 Germany +49 89 13 1850 |
The ambience of this Turkish restaurant is as far away as you can get from a doner kebab snack bar. It is simple and classy with salmon pink walls and dark wooden furniture. The food, on the other hand, is substantial and the portions are ample. Prices are almost embarrassingly low. This is certainly a reason for the popularity of the restaurant, where the atmosphere is pleasant and friendly and sometimes so exuberant that you can't hold a conversation. In the summer, there is seating outside. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Classic Italian cuisine |
Nymphenburger Straße 150 Munich, Bayern 80634 Germany +49 (0)89 16 8548 |
Located close to Rotkreuzplatz, Pitti is one of the district's best Italian restaurants. During the day, it pampers business people with two different lunch menus every day, at(EUR 4.95 and 7.90) apiece, while it caters mostly to guests from Neuhausen in the evening. Despite the small tables by the window, this is a discrete and first class restaurant with low lights and that traditional Italian ambience. The food is excellent and satisfying (very different from many run-of-the-mill pizzerias), catering for a variety of tastes. Some examples of its fare include Spaghetti alla Marinara and Piccata Cambarola. It is advisable to make a reservation for an evening meal. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This family restaurant (run by the Singh family) has a typical Indian ambience without being over-the-top, and offers a good variety of dishes from India's many regions: e.g. a good selection of chicken dishes for EUR9.50-12, vegetarian meals and curries for EUR8.25-9.75. The lamb is also highly recommended; try the botti kebab (marinated lamb fillet and vegetables on a skewer) for EUR12.50. Not many people known that, 'pizza from the wood-burning oven' is a speciality of the island of Ischia. Now over 25 years old, Neuhausen's cooking collective may have aged a bit, but is definitely not past its best. The Italian-inspired cuisine (with ecological ingredients), the carefully-chosen Italian wine and the cultural events (lectures, exhibitions etc.) are simply great fun. Coffee and take-aways |

Fans of the USA no longer have to cross the Atlantic to enjoy a typical American coffee shop. The San Francisco Coffee Company spreads its aromas from a corner building on Nymphenburger Straße, where it sells coffee, sandwiches and muffins. The emphasis is on the coffee, though, and its direct links with coffee manufacturers guarantees its varied but high quality range. That is why the SFCC likes to be known as the 'Coffee Place'. SFCC also has style, combining mahogany shades with light blue and orange. The staff provide friendly service American-style. Situated in the leafy park surrounding Schloss Nymphenburg, the Palmenhaus (Palm House) is a popular pit-stop for tourist groups by day and a favoured venue for business meetings and conferences in the evening. No wonder. With its exotic palms and cacti, and its beautiful, bright atmosphere, Schlosscafé Palmenhaus is a real oasis. The high prices are hardly surprising, although the service could in truth be better. Nevertheless, this is still a wonderful place for a romantic brunch. Rolled up and ready to go |
Volkartstraße 22 Neuhausen Munich, Bayern 80634 Germany http://www.sushi-zen.com |
Light, minimalist Japanese style, pale wood and dark blue decor ornamented with a little black lettering, Sushi Zen has no superfluous accessories and no strident color tones. The atmosphere is very Zen. When the little restaurant on Volkartstraße is full, though, it has to be said that the noise levels rise, because the tiny tables are somewhat tightly packed together. The menu includes nigri sushi ( EUR 2-5), maki sushi (EUR 3.50-8), inside outside rolls ( EUR 7-10.50), hand rolls (EUR 7) and mixed sushi ( EUR 15). If you think that sushi are just simple little rolls, you about to be re educated! There are, of course, hot dishes (about EUR 8) and soups (EUR 4.50). There is a 10% discount on takeaways. Beer for breakfast? |

As with the other 'Egger' restaurants, the interior is decorated in the style of a typical old-Munich inn. The furnishings are dark and heavy; chandeliers hang from the ceiling. This is one of those typical urban bars where you can have a leisurely breakfast at the weekend, or a beer or two in the evening (Löwenbräu, Franziskaner or Guinness). The downside is that it is always busy and is often so loud that conversation is barely possible. However, in summer you can sit outside and enjoy dishes like Kässpätzle (southern German noodles) for (EUR 6.90), Penne Arrabiata for(EUR 6.40) or breakfast from (EUR 2.50-7.75).
