Beer brewing monks |
Weinstraße 7 Innenstadt Munich, Bayern 80333 Germany +49 89 29 8481 |
The monks from Andechs, also known as the 'Holy Bavarian Mountain', have recently opened up a new establishment opposite the Frauenkirche in the centre of town. The beer-brewing monks have found an experienced partner in innkeeper Sep Krätz and word has got out that the new place is just as good as the old. Rainer Maria Latzte, a former Beuys pupil, decorated the ceilings with his 'Dream of the Bavarian Sky' and guests can order all kinds of traditional Bavarian fare, including a fantastic Fleischpflanzerl (meat loaf with potato salad). Grandiose aristocratic house |
Maria-Einsiedel-Straße 45 Thalkirchen Munich, Bayern 81379 Germany |
This was once the home and studio of Cosmas Damian Asam, an important painter of the late baroque period. The facade of the Asamschlößl is a rare example of the sort which was once so widespread in Munich. The painter acquired the estate in 1724, added a studio and started to decorate the facade with his work. At the time, the grounds also included buildings for the workers, a geometrically designed garden and a chapel built by his brother Egid Quirin. The house was rebuilt after the War by Schleich and the paintings on its facade restored. Quality regional cuisine has been served here at reasonable prices since 1993. The dining rooms are traditional and comfortable, comprising the Tirol Room, a lounge with a clay oven and a beautiful garden. Celebrities from the nearby film studios in Geiselgasteig are regular guests here. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Traditional pub for insiders |
Landsbergerstraße 19 Ludwigsvorstadt Munich, Bayern 80339 Germany +49 89 50 7047 http://www.augustiner-restaura... |
The Bräustuben, situated right by the Augustiner Brewery, is as yet undiscovered by tourists and the atmosphere amongst the students and regulars who patronise the pub is much more typical than at other nearby establishments. The decor is simple and rustic, the local food cheap and good, the portions generous. And if you didn't know it before, you'll notice that Bavarians love their food and drink! A great place which is suitable for everyone who wants to get know the 'real' Bavaria. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Traditional brewery-cum-restaurant |
Neuhauser Straße 27 Innenstadt Munich, Bayern 80331 Germany +49 89 2328 3257 http://www.augustiner-restaura... |
Founded in 1328, this used to be the Augustiner monastery's brewery - the oldest one in town. In the 19th century it became private property and was transformed into one of Munich's most beautiful restaurants, with the brewery being moved to the suburbs. The rooms, designed in 1896 by Emanuel von Seidl, have been preserved as they were. But, despite all this fascinating history, you should definitely not neglect to try the famous Augustiner beer and tasty Bavarian and international dishes. Main courses cost up to EUR 20. No inferno! |
Dantestr 16 Moosach Munich, Bayern 80637 Germany +49 89 1591 9870 |
This restaurant is a firm favorite for larger groups, so bring all your friends and family. The menu consists of Bavarian delicacies, the specialty of the house is the beer goulash with knödeln (dumplings). The desserts, like the old-fashioned apple strudel with ice-cream, for example, are to die for. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Traditional beer garden near the city centre |
Arnulfstraße 52 Maxvorstadt Munich, Bayern 80335 Germany +49 89 59 4393 http://www.augustinerkeller.de |
Augustinerkeller is the only really traditional beer garden left in the city centre and serves up big glasses of tasty beer. Thanks to an ancient law dating back to the days when Bavaria had a monarchy, guests are allowed to bring their own food; but there's really no need, as the traditional fare served here is good-value and tasty. The clientele is mixed, with families, students, business people, locals and tourists. The beer is reputed to be the best in Munich! Review © 2007, Wcities |

A beer garden for bad weather |
Dachauer Straße 185 Nymphenburg Munich, Bayern 80637 Germany +49 89 1597 0062 http://www.bachmaier-wirtshaus.de |
This pub on Leonrodplatz offers original Bavarian fare "like Granny would have cooked"; and like then, the food is mainly home-made. There are numerous soups, desserts, salads, and of course, typical Bavarian meat dishes. Vegetarian food is available every day, and at weekends one you can enjoy breakfast until 3pm. This includes quark (a low fat cheese dish), jam, honey etc. at a buffet. The most notable features of this beer garden are its roof, outdoor heating and service until midnight! Nuremberg sausages as they should be |
Dreifaltigkeitsplatz 1 Innenstadt Munich, Bayern 80331 Germany +49 89 29 5113 |
Although many people don't know it, Nuremberg's grilled sausages also feature in Bavarian cuisine. This atmospheric restaurant with old vaulted rooms (renovated in 1994) prepares the tasty Franconian sausages in the traditional manner, grilled on an open wooden fire and accompanied by cabbage and fresh horseradish EUR 5). No doubts about the beer being fresh either , it is tapped from a wooden barrel on-site! Other Bavarian specialities, freshly baked pretzels and Franconian wines are also served. Hot meals are available until 9.30p. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Traditional brewery with good food |
Zornedinger Straße 2 Aying Munich, Bayern 85653 Germany +49 8095 9065 |
The Inselkammer family has been producing a very drinkable and much-loved beer in the traditional Aying Brewery since 1878. The menu features typical Bavarian fare (including a type of bread soup) as well as a good variety of regional cuisine with an international flavor. There is a beer garden with seating for 200. The oldest brewery in the world |
Weihenstephaner Str 1 Freising Munich, Bayern 85354 Germany +49 81 611 3004 |
The Benedictine monks have been brewing beer here since 1040, making this place the oldest brewery in the world. The brewery now belongs to the state, but still attracts customers with a selection of Bavarian specialties served in enormous portions (from 11:30a-10p). The beer garden offers a great view of the mountains north of Munich. An old law allows you to bring your own food, but there's really no need! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Hidden between Platzl and Isartor, this rustically decorated Bavarian restaurant with long wooden tables serves great beer and hearty food - generally ox meat - boiled, roasted or fried and served with the classical garnishes of potatoes and cabbage. Main courses cost EUR 7.50-20, a large beer will set you back EUR 3 and lunch can be had for EUR 6.50. Guests can sit outside on the terrace in the summer. Review © 2007, Wcities |

French restaurant, Bavarian beer garden |
Zentralländstraße 30 Thalkirchen Munich, Bayern 81379 Germany +49 89 7429 9715 |
Idyllically situated near the banks of the River Isar, yet not far from the city centre, this restaurant - housed in a 19th century neo-Renaissance villa - is soberly decorated in black and white, but offers delicious French cuisine at fairly reasonable prices (the fish dishes are particularly good!). The main attraction is the beer garden, which is tucked well away from the traffic and also offers hearty Bavarian fare. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Oberzeismering Tutzing Munich, Bayern 82327 Germany +49 81 58 8242 http://www.ilkahoehe.de |
Specialising in exquisitely prepared Bavarian fish and game dishes, the food is excellent although slightly pricey. It is, however, well worth the splurge and there are beautiful views from the beer garden of Lake Starnberger and the Alps (weather permitting). But it is not the end of the world if you have to sit indoors as the interior decor is extremely cosy. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Wagner and veal sausage |
Perusastraße 5 Max-Joseph-Platz Munich, Bayern 80333 Germany +49 89 23 18120 |
Located directly opposite the Opera House and considered to be one of the best places for good Bavarian cuisine, Franziskaner offers culinary classics like home-made Leberkäse (meat loaf) and Weißwurst (veal sausage) as well as a selection of international dishes. The wooden decor has been somewhat badly 'Bavarianised' and the staff serve customers in a typically Germanic way which foreigners sometimes find a little gruff. All in all a pleasant pub with a good mix of locals and tourists. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Beer garden with jazz |
Georg-Kalb-Straße 3 Großhesselohe Munich, Bayern 82049 Germany +49 89 7499 4030 http://www.waldwirtschaft.de/ |
Charmingly located in Isartal, this popular Bavarian establishment serves up high-quality traditional cuisine at mid-range prices. Waldwirtschaft is known for its large beer garden (2,500 seats and a children's playground with swings), which offers local grilled specialities and live jazz and dixie bands. Some time ago, complaints from residents about the music led to the introduction of an early closing time, but local landlords organised a 'beer garden revolt' which resulted in the closing time being extended to 11p. Schönfeldstraße 22 Maxvorstadt Munich, Bayern 80539 Germany +49 89 28 5909 |
This traditional Munich restaurant, founded in the 19th century, offers its clientèle a cultivated ambiance and high-quality Bavarian cuisine. The wooden-paneled rooms decorated with hunting trophies make the perfect backdrop for chef Hubert Buckl's game and meat specialties. The stuffed oxtail and the legendary mini black pudding are particularly recommended. The wine list is extensive; the service exemplary. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Out of town cabaret |
Sudetendeutsche Straße 40 Am Hart Munich, Bayern 80937 Germany +49 (0)89 3186 7771 http://www.hinterhoftheater.de/ |
This small cabaret theatre in the Wirtshaus am Hart inn is situated in the northern suburbs. A dependance of the highly respected Schlachthof, the reputation of the former has stood it in good stead. As a result, world famous cabaret stars and local personalities like Eisi Gulp and Faltsch Wagoni are prepared to make the trek out to this quiet residential suburb. The beer garden is a great place to relax in summer and every Friday the tempo picks up for 'reggae night'. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This most famous of pubs draws people from all over the globe, even at nine in the morning! Its unique charm comes from the Bavarian music and the handful of regulars who gather at the bar. Beer and Schmankerl (roast pork with trimmings) complete the set up. In the summertime 'real' locals make for its wonderful courtyard, while the Festsaal room hosts a Bavarian evening with music every night, costing EUR 4.50 admission. Main meals cost EUR 10-15. A litre tankard of beer costs EUR 5.70 and small mealsEUR 4.45. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Superb Bavarian folk theatre |
Wilhelm-Leibl-Straße 22 Solln Munich, Bayern 81479 Germany +49 89 79 4214 |
The cosy ambience of Georg Maier's Iberl-Bühne has been Munich's best venue for down-to-earth Bavarian folk theatre since 1966. There are performances here every evening from 8pm, most of them penned by Maier himself. The reputation of these shows, such as Grattleroper, stretches way beyond Munich. Food and drink is an essential part of Bavarian hospitality, and nowhere less than in this sort of theatre. Attached to the one hundred seater theatre is a wonderful old Bavarian pub with a beer garden. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This small brewery, opened in an old train station, offers simple, traditional, Bavarian cuisine as well as every Bavarian's staple liquid diet: Weissbier (yeast beer). Another speciality which is highly recommended is the roast pork in beer. The staff are friendly in a typical Bavarian kind of way; tours of the brewery can be arranged by prior appointment. Somewhat out of place |
Nymphenburger Straße 162 Neuhausen Munich, Bayern 80634 Germany +49 89 168 9241 |
This restaurant, situated on busy Rotkreuzplatz, looks slightly out of place: it is a low building surrounded by giant multi-storey edifices, and its beer garden borders a major road junction. Yet the minute the sun appears, this place gets jam-packed. And it's slightly hard to understand why. The food isn't great (although it is cheap); and the clientele aren't the youngest bunch either - although they do seem to like the Augustiner beer! Review © 2007, Wcities |

The Dicker Mann (The Fat Man) is true to its name and serves up enormous portions suitable for the hungriest of men. If you're not a big eater, you might be better off sharing your meal with someone else. The extensive menu offers vegetarian dishes and salads as well as Bavarian specialties. The interior is rustically decorated and is frequented by business people from the surrounding offices as well as food enthusiasts in the evenings. There is a medium-sized beer garden (400 seats), and hot food is available until midnight. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Geared towards cyclists |
Linienstraße 93 Deisenhofen Munich, Bayern 82041 Germany +49 89 613 9010 |
A traditional Bavarian pub with first-class local specialities, a beautiful beer garden with seating for 2,500, a small sun-terrace and a service station (including a pump) for cyclists. The latter tradition goes back to the days of Franz Xaver Kugler, the landlord in 1922, who topped up his glasses of beer with lemonade during the post-war beer shortage. His innovation was named 'Radler' (cyclist) after his regular customers, and the drink (half beer and half lemonade) has now become famous throughout Germany. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Park and beer garden |
Hirschgarten 1 Nymphenburg Munich, Bayern 80993 Germany +49 89 17 2591 http://www.hirschgarten.de/ |
Hirschgarten was originally a game enclosure built by the Elector Karl Theodor at the end of the eighteenth century. A small part of the historic enclosure has been preserved and can be seen from the beer garden. With 8,000 seats, the beer garden is the biggest in the city, and is also one of the most pleasant because of its peaceful location and numerous chestnut trees. It is not one of the most traditional though- beer has never been brewed or stored here, and it was only converted from a hunting house to a restaurant in 1970, when the garden was also built. This is, as is usual, a self-service beer garden, and you'll have to wash your beer glass yourself before getting a refill! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Barbecues and beer |
Menterschwaigstraße 4 Grünwald Munich, Bayern 81545 Germany +49 89 64 0732 |
Both the bright and spacious interior and the location in the heart of idyllic Grünwald make for an extremely pleasant visit. The chef concentrates his efforts on local and regional specialties, but the food is still fairly costly. The huge beer garden (with seating for 2,200) is a firm favorite with locals and one of the best in Munich. Traditional Bavarian fare and grilled fish dishes are sold from the barbecue. There is a play area for kids and the famous Bavaria film studios are close by. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Local brewery |
Sendlinger Straße 14 Innenstadt Munich, Bayern 80331 Germany +49 89 260 5026 http://www.hackerhaus.de |
First used as a brewery in the year 1417, this place really took off in the 18th century when it was taken over by Hacker and Pschorr. Like many other beers, Hacker-Pschorr is now produced out of town, but is still sold in the original city-centre building, which has now been renovated after damage in the Second World War. The beer is accompanied by tasty Bavarian specialities such as roast pork. Old photographs and other bits and bobs document the history of the brewery; the Silbersaal hall and the sculpture by Johann Hauttmann (of Schloß Linderhof fame) in the foyer are well worth seeing. Wine & snacks |
Residenzstraße 1 Residenz Munich, Bayern 80333 Germany +49 89 22 5628 http://www.BayernPfalz.de |
A real Munich institution, situated in the former Royal Guardhouse and especially popular with theatre-goers, this traditional Munich tavern fills up at the end of performances in the nearby theatres and concert houses. Try specialities such as the excellent Stuffed Stomach of Pork - it comes highly recommended. The wine-tasting bar was opened in 1950 by the Landesverband der Pfälzer in Bayern (a regional Bavarian-Palatinate association) to provide a culinary reminder of the ties between the Palatinate and Bavaria. Opposite the festival ground |
Theresienhöhe 7 Schwanthaler Höhe Munich, Bayern 80336 Germany +49 89 50 1088 |
Situated directly opposite the Theresienwiese (venue for the Oktoberfest), this bar offers a less expensive (and better) alternative to the overpriced meals in the festival marquee. It's worth coming here at any time of year, and not just during the festival, for a taste of the fine Bavarian and Italian cuisine. The chestnut tree-filled beer garden seems like a green oasis in the middle of the concrete jungle. Pizzas are available from EUR 4, and snacks such as garlic bread from EUR 2. The spare ribs at an unbeatable EUR 5.50 are highly recommended. The service is good and the beer even better. Review © 2007, Wcities |

An attractive view |
Kirchplatz 1 Pullach Munich, Bayern 82041 Germany +49 89 793 0285 |
Although the name of this pub, Rabenwirt, means 'raven landlord', the landlord certainly does not behave like a raven to his guests: healthy portions of traditional Bavarian cooking are served at reasonable prices. Try the likes of beer goulash at EUR 9, suckling pig at EUR 12.50 or the house speciality spit roast duck at EUR 14. The seafood is also recommended, and the lunch menu is good value at EUR 7.50. An outstanding attraction is the sun terrace, located near the guest rooms, which has a wonderful view over the Isartal. Piano music is played on Thursdays and hot meals are served until 11.30p. Leopoldstraße 72 Schwabing Munich, Bayern 80802 Germany +49 89 39 0092 http://www.zurbrezn.de |
Nicely decorated throughout, although possibly slightly overdone, this place is too hectic and the clientele too young to be described as a typical Bavarian pub. The tables are placed close together in the American style; there is a second bar in the basement and the manager is obviously aiming to attract passers-by from Leopoldstraße. The food is fine, particularly the roast pork, and the prices are reasonable. The main advantages of this place are the long opening hours and the tables on the pavement, which are kept warm on cold evenings with heaters. Review © 2007, Wcities |
