The Wine made here highlights Napa's earthly flavor through the hand picked grapes which lend a characteristic texture to the Wine. Did you know that Catacula Lake Winery's vast 1025 acres of land were first learning grounds for children from every social strata? It was called the Bar 49 Estate, a non-profit organization which held summer camps for kids teaching them to ride a horse, fish, even water-front sports. The year 1999 changed all of the above. The vintage technique of Southern Wappo Indians was put into business. The process of making juice out of Manzanita tree berries found its way to the following wines - Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon. What's more? Catacula's wines have claimed awards thanks to the existence of the various enticing ingredients such as oak, almonds, cedar and the manzanita...Take a turn in the willowy vineyard but with prior appointment. One good reason to visit Sonoma during July would be the Catalan Festival, where you can get acquainted with the Spanish culture and language. All said and done, the actual reason why people come to this festival is the food, wine and music. Spanish delicacies and beverages stream in from all over the Bay Area. Flamenco music lights up the atmosphere, and all the fun and excitement generated by the dance is surely something you wouldn't want to miss. You're sure to bump into someone making a deliberate attempt to put on a Catalan accent. There's so much to look forward to, that it becomes necessary to book in advance. Cuvaison was founded in 1969 by two Silicon Valley engineers. A Swiss visitor was so impressed by the wines that her family bought the winery 1979. Another change came when the winery moved from the more traditional heavy cabernets to the release of two highly acclaimed wines, a Merlot and a Chardonnay, in the mid-1980s. Many accolades for these highly rated, affordable wines followed, and today the winery produces 65,000 cases, mostly Chardonnay. Facilities include a wine cave and pleasant picnic area. Harvest-time is the best time to visit DeLoach Vineyards, where you will see loads of fine grapes hanging in luscious clusters, begging to be picked and squashed. The winery, grown from a small shack to a well-equipped facility, is designed to produce several varietals from different kinds of grapes. There is a comfortable visitor center on the premises, and you can indulge in wine-tasting too - there is a special tasting session (by appointment only), where food is paired up with the wines. Wines mature with age, and the same can be said of the DeLorimier Winery, for it has been around since 1986. Attention is paid to each grove here, right from the bud to the bottle. These lush vineyards are a pleasure to behold, for they reflect the region's diverse soil – mountainous, loamy and graveled. The unique quality of the wines produced is that each wine contains 75% of the dominant grape flavor, while the remaining 25% is comprised of other grapes, thus earning suitably, the title 'varietal' - truly a connoisseur's delight! The husband-wife duo that run this winery take pride in their profession. For 20 years now, they've been growing grapes and following time-honored techniques of wine-production to create varietals that have a special personal touch. Friends and family pitch in only at harvest, picking grapes and stowing them for crushing. DeNatale wins several medals at the annual Orange County Fair, so there must be a secret to their production process! The tastings are free – that's the crowd-puller at this winery, specializing in hand-crafted wines. Sauvignon blancs, chardonnays, merlots, and pinot noirs rub shoulders with smaller, lesser-known varietals of equal taste. The crème-de-la-crème among the wines found here is the 2000 Gold - Late Harvest Botrytis Riesling, aptly called a "dessert in a bottle". A point to note is that Deerfield has won 32 gold, 48 silver and 2 bronze medals in 41 national and regional competitions. Wine worth its price, one would say! Review © 2007, Wcities |

This winery was built by the owner himself, who painstakingly put it together with his own hands. Its two-foot thick walls with elegant floral paintings make the place a delight in itself. This little winery may not be easy to find, but it's worth the search. The vineyards are extensive and fruitful, and the view from the grounds adds to the experience. Viognier, syrah, cinsaut, merlot, carignane, grenache, grenache blanc and counoise grapes are all ripened to perfection before being crushed to form fine wine at Frick. Traditional methods are employed here, including the arduous task of punching the cap by hand during fermentation. No wonder the wines are delicious! At Frog's Leap one will really get to know what true wine making is all about. Situated in the heart of Rutherford, here it is believed that a wine maker should allow the wine to develop with a distinct character of its own. Choosing grapes from a surrounding of 40 acres of vineyard, each grape varietal in here has a micro climate of its own. And this permits the wine to add in a strong character of the "terroir" it has emmanted from. Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Leapfrögmilch, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Rutherford, Zinfandel and Pink are some of the names made here which you can select from. To add to this they they have an in-house wine and accessories store from where you can pick your flavor. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Honig Vineyard And Winery not only makes the finest Sauvignon Blanc but also follows environment friendly methods in all stages of wine making. What started as a small vineyard growing and selling grapes to wine makers, has now grown into an acclaimed winery selling the best wines to the finest restaurants. What is even more heartening is their principle of working in collaboration with mother nature. They avoid pesticides, and breed owls and hawks to take care of rodents. The farm also trains dogs to sniff out worms from the grape vine. Solar energy is used extensively on the farm, making a visit to the Honig Vineyard and Winery a one of a kind experience! After his father farmed the land for more than a decade, present owner Joe Rochioli purchased the vineyards in the late 1950's. Apart from producing some of the most outstanding wines in Sonoma County, Rochioli's vineyard is also one of the best picnic sites in the area. The winery is known for making the county's most authentic Chardonnays, but it doesn't arrange any wine tasting tours, nor does it offer exclusive discount or membership facilities to its visitors. So, your only way of getting familiar with its taste, is the nearest wine shop or restaurant. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The Nalle Winery is run by a husband and wife team of Doug and Lee Nalle, along with their son Andrew. The winery and the home is located on the nearby Henderlongs estate, where they grow and make some really awesome wines. The Nalle family believes wine drinking is a happy event and they have incorporated this in their business fundamentals. Here there are no caves like other vineyards, instead they store the wine in huge 'Potato Bunkers', as they call it. A visit to the vineyard is a pleasant experience and the scene of vineyard in full bloom...breathtaking! Review © 2007, Wcities |

The real deal! |
1299 Tubbs Lane Napa Valley, CA 94515 United States +1 707 942 6463 http://www.oldfaithfulgeyser.com |
The term 'old faithful' is most closely associated with the Yellowstone Park geyser, but it is actually used to describe any geyser that erupts on a regular schedule. Napa Valley's version is a blast! Boiling hot water shoots 60 feet into the crystal blue sky, while spectators gather casually round and gasp every 30 minutes or so. Driving by, you might mistake this for a tourist trap; a little worn down, more than a little tacky from the outside; but rest assured, it really is worth the price of admission. Don't miss the poor little fainting goats on the side, and the fascinating exhibit on geyser eruptions and earthquake predictions. Seek out owner Olga Kolbek; she's a gold mine of fascinating local lore. Admission: $8 adults, $7 seniors (60+), $3 children 6-12; under 6 free. Review © 2007, Wcities |

26 years of wine-making |

One of the biggest names in the wine-making business, Opus One started out as a collaborative venture between Robert Mondavi and the late Baron Philippe De Rothschild. A sprawling winery, it uses only state-of-the-art production techniques and turns out about 25,000 cases of wine annually. Priced at $150 a bottle, it certainly is a hefty price for a bottle of wine. Wine connoisseurs, however, don't seem to mind paying this sum at all - Opus One is reputed to produce some of the best wine in the world. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Michael Stusser's dream project "Osmosis" is now a popular name in America. Osmosis is a result of Michael's stint in Japan, where he learnt the healing effects of enzyme bath. The entire bath process begins with a cup of Japanese herbal tea, after which you lie down in a tub filled with a mix of cedar, rice bran, and plant enzymes. The combination of these ingredients stimulates and relaxes every part of your body. After the bath, you can either rest or enjoy a facial or any of the therapies on offer. All in all, it is a unique wellness experience, which must be felt to be believed. See their website for further details. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The Regusci Winery is one of the few still-standing Napa Valley wineries that existed between 1860 and 1900 - they are termed 'Ghost Wineries'. Constructed almost entirely from lava stone and with walls two feet thick, it is an imposing structure and the architecture is reminiscent of the 19th century. Today it produces two varieties of wine, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, turning out a total of 6,000 cases a year. Review © 2007, Wcities |

650 Lytton Springs Road Napa Valley, CA 95448 United States +1 707 433 7721 http://www.ridgewine.com/visit... |
The Ridge at Lytton Springs follows the traditional methods of crushing grapes for the wine and ingredients available on the estate are used for fermentation. What further attracts visitors to this estate is the importance given to ecological sustainability. The estate uses rice straw bales as its walls to ensure air and light flow through. No conventional electrical air conditioning techniques are used in the building and the winery for cooling during the summer. The straw in the walls allow cool air to flow in. Solar power is used for drawing energy supply to the entire winery and estate. The estate and the straw covered tasting room is beautiful and a visit is highly recommended to this hundred year old vineyard. Review © 2007, Wcities |
