Rustic charm |
1250 Lincoln Ave Napa Valley, CA 94515 United States +1 707 942 4101 http://www.napabeer.com |
In an area best known for highbrow tastes and attitudes, this gem offers a welcomed touch of rustic reality. Located inside the Calistoga Inn, this restaurant and brewery is a clandestine retreat from the heavy flow of tourists in Napa. Its patio overlooks the banks of the Napa River and during the warm months, the kitchen staff can be seen cooking outdoors over wood-fired grills. The menu harvests a wide range of global influences, including Spanish, Mexican and Jamaican. Starter plates are diverse and perfect for sharing. The Country Paella - saffron rice with imported chorizo, chicken, shellfish and vegetables - stands out in a menu of meats, fishes and pastas. An adjacent brewery serves award-winning micro-brews. Visit on the weekend for live acoustic music in its pub. Review © 2007, Wcities |

San Francisco locals are ignoring the city's best restaurants to flock to this countryside jewel, considered to be one of the best establishments in America. According to reports, reservations should be made at least two months in advance. The exquisite American-French food defies description or convention. Appetizers include Poached Moulard Duck, Foie Gras au Torchon with Port-braised Mission Fig, and Adriatic Fig Salad. Entrees include Sirloin of Fallow Venison wrapped in Applewood and Smoked Bacon with sweet carrot puree. The French Laundry's extraordinary food is exceeded only by its excellent service. Patrons are always impressed by the breath and depth of knowledge of Master Sommelier Paul Roberts, whose recommendations are as tasteful as they are informative. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fish in the Middle of Wine Country |
641 Main Street Napa Valley, CA 94574 United States +1 707 963 0700 http://www.gofishrestaurant.net/ |
The brainchild of Cindy Pawlcyn, Go Fish is an elegant restaurant dedicated to seafood. The decor is a breezy and crisp. White is the central color with accents of blue, reminiscent of being out at sea. Tables are plush booths, unless you're at the sushi bar. The sushi bar is large and pristine, a world away from the dining room. Service at the sushi bar is attentive and personalized. Only the freshest fish are handled and served - all with immaculate precision. The menu is large offering traditional surf & turf and fish & chips. The real treats occur in dishes that fuse Californian and Pacific Rim flavors, like in the Chili Lime Gulf Prawns served with egg noodles and a red-curry coconut broth. Whether its lunch or dinner, Go Fish is refreshing. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Julia calls the shots |
500 First Street Napa Valley, CA 94559 United States +1 707 265 5700 http://www.juliaskitchen.org/ |
Conceived as both a preeminent dining and learning experience Julia's Kitchen, the main dining room at COPIA offers exquisite cuisine prepared in an expansive open kitchen. The casually chic restaurant is named after famed cook and author Julia Child. She is most famous for bringing French cuisine and technique into American mainstream through her various cookbooks and television programs. The restaurant continues Child's tradition by creating menus infused with French tastes and seasonal ingredients. The motto here is "from the garden to the table." Premium ingredients, herbs and produce, are grown and hand-picked from Copia's organic gardens. Menus - the Tasting Menu and Movie Menu, for example, are created daily to reflect the freshest seasonal ingredients. The wine list, as you'd expect in Napa Valley, is extensive. Placed within Madrona Manor Inn, the restaurant is one of the Top 5 Restaurants in Napa and Sonoma County. With Victorian backdrop, candle light, delicious wine to complement the cuisine, the atmosphere is more than inviting. The restaurant has 3 different dinning areas one of them being alfresco. Apart from the custom menu the restaurant also features a separate tasting menu along with an extensive wine list. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Deceptively casual |
7399 Saint Helena Highway Napa Valley, CA 94558 United States +1 707 944 2424 http://www.mustardsgrill.com/ |
Popular wisdom holds that this is the restaurant that kicked off the latest round in the fine dining craze in the North Bay. That may or may not be true. What is a fact is that chef Cindy Pawlcyn, who went on to the Fog City Diner and The Buckeye Roadhouse, started here and her influence is still felt to this day with house specials such as a marinated flank steak that has a soupcon of Asia about it. The atmosphere, like the food, is upscale roadhouse with an airy dining room with walls that are almost entirely made of windows. The staff is lively and and efficient. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Ideal for wine lovers |
6795 Washington St Washington Square Napa Valley, CA 94599 United States +1 707 944 8686 http://www.napavalleygrille.com/ |
The restaurant is famous for its award-winning wine list that only features the best of the Wine Country, including many rare and older vintages. Dine alfresco on a floral-lined patio or admire the view from inside. The decor is a bit stiff, but the strict neutral colors are softened with the abundant presence of florals. The ambiance, however, is romantic and chic enough to bring clients. The menu focuses on flavor, where it is in pastas and risottos, or exotic meats like boar and ostrich. The menu changes regularly to take advantage of fresh, seasonal ingredients. For lighter fare, enjoy small plates offered at the bar. Stop in on Thursday night for Sliders Night when a special slider-beer combination is offered. Located directly off of Highway 29, it's an easy find for both locals and tourists. This comfortable and cozy restaurant is filled with vibrant colors and visually compelling artwork. Favorite treats include a dish of six oysters, as well as the homemade tortillas. The place caters mostly to locals who come in for the New York Steak Au Poivre and the many pasta and fish specials. The wine list is superb, concentrating on several local varietals and topping out at USD45 for the most expensive bottle. It is a spacious and casual place to dine with incredible service. Napa Valley Innovation |
807, Main Street Napa Valley, CA 94559 United States +1 707 252 4474 http://www.pilarnapa.com/ |
At Pilar, located in downtown Napa, innovation is the name of the game. The lunch menu, while paying homage to home cookin' with items as simple as a ham 'n' cheese sandwich, also features inventions as exotic as crab tostadas and lamb lasagna. At dinner, meals are a bit less linguistically whimsical, but no less elegant. Venison flank steak, pan-fried sand dabs and day boat scallops are just a few of the choice offerings you might find on a visit to this culinary mecca. Dessert brings a whole selection of favorites, once again perked up with helpings of fresh fruit and other bits of goodness. Don't forget the expertly assembled beer and wine lists. Also, Pilar offers cooking class for a $35 fee. Visit their website for details. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Casual and cool |
587 St. Helena Highway South Highway 29 Napa Valley, CA 94574 United States +1 707 967 0550 http://www.presssthelena.com/ |
This top-notch restaurant is as famous for its view as for meats and seafood. Trees and flowers frame the exterior, while floor-to-ceiling wine racks, huge chairs and crystal accessories add to the cozy ambiance created by the roaring fireplace indoors. The food here is as delicious as it looks - you will find yourself eating your way through roasts and grills, casseroles and delicious desserts (the Baked Alaska comes highly recommended!). The wine list is a surprise, for it features some rare vintages alongside local varietals. The staff is friendly and informative, if a little tardy. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Feast til You're Blue in the Face |
6480, Washington Street Napa Valley, CA 94599 United States +1 707 944 2222 http://www.reddnapavalley.com |
No trip to the Napa Valley would be complete without a meal at Redd. Home of mind-blowing innovative seasonal menus and top-notch wine pairings. This Yountville gourmet destination keeps connoisseurs guessing - and drooling for more. The decor is minimalist: a strict color palate of whites and blacks with traces of natural wood. The large windows keep the room bright and airy, and bringing in the colors and seasons of Yountbille. First courses may include such rare delights as Glazed Pork Belly, a Foie Gras Medley, Rabbit Mole or Lobster Risotto. Entrees are no less artful than Halibut Saltimbocca or Moroccan Spiced Lamb Loin. Feeling truly saucy? Opt for a five-course tasting menu, wine pairing comes at additional cost. For a smaller, more casual meal order from menu of small bites: tacos, potstickers and pizza, at the bar. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Overlooking the south golf course, the Royal Oak is one of three restaurants at the Silverado Resort. Massive beams, floor-to-ceiling picture windows and plush upholstered chairs create an elegantly relaxed ambiance. The tables allow ample legroom and private conversation. Dressy casual attire is appropriate and the service is sublime. Menu items are prepared using local produce, herbs, meats and poultry. Try the Mesquite-grilled Pork Tenderloin, Yakitori-style and the farm-raised Muscovy Duck Breast. The sinfully delicious desserts include a Creme Brulee Duet (praline and vanilla bean) and White Chocolate & Croissant Bread Pudding. There is a full bar and extensive local wine list. French dining without the attitude |
1140 Rutherford Road Napa Valley, CA 94573 United States +1 707 963 9770 http://www.latoque.com |
Excellence has no restraints when it comes to this restaurant, which Wine Spectato magazine named "America's Best Restaurant" in 2000. It features a nightly five-course prix fixe menu, showcasing an array of sublime textures and flavors. Menus items have included roasted New England Monkfish, Veal Tenderloins with Cabernet Foie Gras Sauce, and Panko Crusted Frog Legs. Naturally, its wine list is massive. Take advantage of the restaurant's wine pairing menu - the sommelier presents each bottle. The decor is sleek and modern. Weekend reservations must be made four to six weeks in advance. In 2007, the inaugural year of the Michelin Guide San Francisco, Bay Area & Wine Country, La Toque was awarded a Michelin Star. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Situated in the imposing, 101-year-old Greystone, former home of the Christian Brothers winery, Greystone restaurant is nice retreat from the bustle of the Napa Valley. Adventurous renditions of Spanish dishes complement California Cuisine that takes Mediterranean cues from the Middle East and Morocco. The menu changes daily to take advantage of fresh local produce. The impressive wine list, promised by the name, does not disappoint. Enjoy seasonal cocktails and Californian microbrews. Sit out on the terrace overlooking fields upon fields of vineyards. Or sit indoors and watch chefs hard at work in the open kitchen. "Today's Temptations" is a small plates menu, inspired by fresh ingredients, intended for the table to share. Review © 2007, Wcities |
