Ideal Family Meal |
6476, Washington Street Napa Valley, CA 94599 United States +1 707 944 2487 http://www.adhocrestaurant.com/ |
At the sleek-looking Ad Hoc, chef Thomas Keller takes the average American meal and turns it up a notch. Although the decor may be sparse, with plain white walls and chrome tables, the food is anything but. For starters, ease into the Haricots Verts and Garden Fig Salad, and then move your way up to the Bacalao & Chick Pea Soup. Finish off the night with a heavenly Chocolate Bread Pudding topped with whipped caramel cream. Though pricey, the meals leave you wishing you could eat Keller-style every day. Spectacular French bistro |
6510 Washington Street Napa Valley, CA 94599 United States +1 707 944 0103 http://www.bistrojeanty.com |
The neighborhood French bistro has won numerous awards - it was named top ten of the Bay Area by Gourmet Magazine and best 20 of San Francisco by Zagat Survey. Locals flock here nightly, while tourists are abundant during the weekends. The decor is rustic, taken right out of the French countryside. The service is attentive and knowledgeable. The menu pays homage French home-style cooking. The Coq au Vin is a knockout. The chicken and the mushrooms are engrossed with the rich flavor of the red wine reduction sauce. The dish is presented in a pristine white serving bowl, a beautiful contrast to the vibrant burgundy color of the dish. No trip to Bisto Jeanty is complete without the Citron Givre, lemon sorbet. This desert showcases the chef's personality and commitment to refined homey foods. The lemon sorbet is served in a hollowed lemon, presumably the same lemon used to make the sorbet. The lemon is plated whole, reconstructed on the plate. The presentation is whimsical and the sorbet is a perfect balance of sweet and tart. Throw in a world-class wine selection and you have completed a wonderful dinner by a renowned chef from the Champagne region of France. In 2007, the inaugural year of the Michelin Guide San Francisco, Bay Area & Wine Country, Bistro Jeanty was awarded a Michelin Star. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Culinary delight |

Chef/owner Thomas Keller continues his commitment to local, fresh, seasonal foods. At Bouchon, in quaint Yountville, the focus is on the art of casual Parisian bistro, home cooking. The decor, in bistro fashion, is simple and yet elegantly modern. The dinning room is dimly lit, complementing the vibrant burgundy color-palate of the décor. The atmosphere is warm, inviting and always lively. The staff works in unison, leaving no glass empty. Bouchon, is where locals, and tourists crowd on weekends, flock for a good time and meal - always filled with laughter and joy. The zinc bar is ever so crowded with patrons waiting to be seated and those seeking for a cocktail. The food and plating have no frills or fuss, instead the concentration is on the meal. Presentation accentuates technique. In other words, the focus is how precision in technique brings to life ordinary food, like chicken in the Poulet Rôti. The roasted chicken is lightly seasoned and basted in its own juice -after it is roasted, adding moisture to the already tenderized skin. The chicken skin, a sun-kissed golden brown, is crispy and flavorful. The kitchen excels on comfort foods like French onion soup, quiches and French fries. The Pommes Frites are perfectly fried, while the interior of the French fry remains moist. The magic here is the ability to turn everyday ingredients into refined meals through the attention to deal. Profiteroles are the best way to end your meal: golden-flaky puff pastry is filled with homemade vanilla ice cream drowning in chocolate sauce – served table-side. Reservations are required, especially on weekends when the entire Napa Valley is overwhelmed with tourists. In 2007, the inaugural year of the Michelin Guide San Francisco, Bay Area & Wine Country, Bouchon was awarded a Michelin Star. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Providing freshly baked breads and deserts for Chef Thomas Keller's Yountville restaurants: French Laundry (The), Bouchon and Ad Hoc, Bouchon Bakery delights its customers with many of the same treats. The bakery is small and quaint. Inside you'll find a small display case filled with macaroons, tarts, cookies and Chocolate Bouchons. The delicacies of sweets doesn't end there, though, more often it starts with Chocolate Bouchons. Chocolate Bouchons are up-right, moist brownies with a warm chocolate center that bursts into your mouth with the first bite, all lightly sprinkled with confection sugar. On weekends, the bakery serves decadent donuts. The TKO, Thomas Keller Oreo, is an unusual treat of two buttery chocolate cookies with a white cream filling sandwiched in between. The bakery also serves ready-made sandwiches on baguettes. Prices may seem high, but sweets are so rarely made or packaged with so much detail and passion. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Centrally located in St. Helena, this popular eatery owned by Cindy Pawlcyn serves delicious sandwiches and mouth-watering fish, chicken, pork and steak dishes. The petite food menu is divided into small plates and large plates. And the bar features chilled beer, delectable cocktails, and freshly squeezed lemonade. Under the desserts category, you can choose from pies, puddings and cakes. You can sample some locally-produced wine along with your food each Thursday night, too. San Francisco locals are ignoring the city's best restaurants to flock to this countryside jewel, considered to be one of the best establishments in America. According to reports, reservations should be made at least two months in advance. The exquisite American-French food defies description or convention. Appetizers include Poached Moulard Duck, Foie Gras au Torchon with Port-braised Mission Fig, and Adriatic Fig Salad. Entrees include Sirloin of Fallow Venison wrapped in Applewood and Smoked Bacon with sweet carrot puree. The French Laundry's extraordinary food is exceeded only by its excellent service. Patrons are always impressed by the breath and depth of knowledge of Master Sommelier Paul Roberts, whose recommendations are as tasteful as they are informative. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This famous establishment in Saint Helena is an old-fashioned ice cream parlor and cafe with lots of old soda signs and 1950s memorabilia on the walls. It contains a full espresso bar, a scrumptious candy store and a variety of antiquities. The chocolate fudge here is legendary, as are the store's excellent coffees and teas. An array of wines and beers are available and the breakfast and lunch deals cannot be beat. The store even sells back issues of Life Magazine! Review © 2007, Wcities |

The brainchild of Cindy Pawlcyn, Go Fish is an elegant restaurant dedicated to seafood. The decor is a breezy and crisp. White is the central color with accents of blue, reminiscent of being out at sea. Tables are plush booths, unless you're at the sushi bar. The sushi bar is large and pristine, a world away from the dining room. Service at the sushi bar is attentive and personalized. Only the freshest fish are handled and served - all with immaculate precision. The menu is large offering traditional surf & turf and fish & chips. The real treats occur in dishes that fuse Californian and Pacific Rim flavors, like in the Chili Lime Gulf Prawns served with egg noodles and a red-curry coconut broth. Whether its lunch or dinner, Go Fish is refreshing. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Popular wisdom holds that this is the restaurant that kicked off the latest round in the fine dining craze in the North Bay. That may or may not be true. What is a fact is that chef Cindy Pawlcyn, who went on to the Fog City Diner and The Buckeye Roadhouse, started here and her influence is still felt to this day with house specials such as a marinated flank steak that has a soupcon of Asia about it. The atmosphere, like the food, is upscale roadhouse with an airy dining room with walls that are almost entirely made of windows. The staff is lively and and efficient. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Ideal for wine lovers |
6795 Washington St Washington Square Napa Valley, CA 94599 United States +1 707 944 8686 http://www.napavalleygrille.com/ |
The restaurant is famous for its award-winning wine list that only features the best of the Wine Country, including many rare and older vintages. Dine alfresco on a floral-lined patio or admire the view from inside. The decor is a bit stiff, but the strict neutral colors are softened with the abundant presence of florals. The ambiance, however, is romantic and chic enough to bring clients. The menu focuses on flavor, where it is in pastas and risottos, or exotic meats like boar and ostrich. The menu changes regularly to take advantage of fresh, seasonal ingredients. For lighter fare, enjoy small plates offered at the bar. Stop in on Thursday night for Sliders Night when a special slider-beer combination is offered. Located directly off of Highway 29, it's an easy find for both locals and tourists. If you love French cuisine, this is one restaurant that you should not miss out on. Styled upon a classic French Inn, the interiors are filled with provencial knick knacks and Rattan furniture. It has great outdoor seating including a fireplace - an ideal place to sit back with a glass of wine and debate on life's travesties. The menus are limited in quantity but definitely not on quality. So try the House-made Pinot cheeseburger or the Croque Madam (a ham and cheese sandwich with a fried egg) or the luscious Cavatappi pasta. No self respecting French restaurant would not have cheese on its menu and Pinot Blanc has a menu full; from Brin D'Amour (from Corsica) to Vacherin (Cow's milk cheese). Review © 2007, Wcities |

This is just the place to take family and friends. It is big, cheerful and noisy. The sights, smells and sounds create a warm and homey atmosphere. There are pizzas galore; try the brick-fried ones, they have a unique flavor. Other Italian treats like pastas and desserts are offered. Let the kids come along and pick their favorites. Organic pizza is a special feature. The garlic rolls seem to be in great demand. The prices are reasonable, hence the place is generally buzzing. Be prepared to wait for a table. This top-notch restaurant is as famous for its view as for meats and seafood. Trees and flowers frame the exterior, while floor-to-ceiling wine racks, huge chairs and crystal accessories add to the cozy ambiance created by the roaring fireplace indoors. The food here is as delicious as it looks - you will find yourself eating your way through roasts and grills, casseroles and delicious desserts (the Baked Alaska comes highly recommended!). The wine list is a surprise, for it features some rare vintages alongside local varietals. The staff is friendly and informative, if a little tardy. Review © 2007, Wcities |

No trip to the Napa Valley would be complete without a meal at Redd. Home of mind-blowing innovative seasonal menus and top-notch wine pairings. This Yountville gourmet destination keeps connoisseurs guessing - and drooling for more. The decor is minimalist: a strict color palate of whites and blacks with traces of natural wood. The large windows keep the room bright and airy, and bringing in the colors and seasons of Yountbille. First courses may include such rare delights as Glazed Pork Belly, a Foie Gras Medley, Rabbit Mole or Lobster Risotto. Entrees are no less artful than Halibut Saltimbocca or Moroccan Spiced Lamb Loin. Feeling truly saucy? Opt for a five-course tasting menu, wine pairing comes at additional cost. The Napa Valley is known for its world-renowned restaurants and wine but little is known about local diamonds like Taylor's. Classic diner food - burgers, fries, onion rings, and shakes - is served. Diner food, however, takes on a new life: fresh, local meats and veggies are used to ensure maximum flavor and quality. Essentially it's a burger stand with a line around the corner. Service is quick and the time spent in line can be used to take in picturesque, quaint St. Helena. All seating is outdoor. In true Napa fashion, wine, as well as beer, is served. The food is reason enough, though the miles of scenic vineyards and rolling hills doesn't hurt, to make the drive up Highway 29. Review © 2007, Wcities |
