Apart from awards for the wines, the vineyard has also garnered admiration for ground-breaking wine crafting techniques. The interesting tasting room-cum-gallery showcases fine art from local painters. Visitors on the lookout for good wine can also pick a canvas or two.

Wines mature with age, and the same can be said of the DeLorimier Winery, for it has been around since 1986. Attention is paid to each grove here, right from the bud to the bottle. These lush vineyards are a pleasure to behold, for they reflect the region's diverse soil – mountainous, loamy and graveled. The unique quality of the wines produced is that each wine contains 75% of the dominant grape flavor, while the remaining 25% is comprised of other grapes, thus earning suitably, the title 'varietal' - truly a connoisseur's delight!

The tastings are free – that's the crowd-puller at this winery, specializing in hand-crafted wines. Sauvignon blancs, chardonnays, merlots, and pinot noirs rub shoulders with smaller, lesser-known varietals of equal taste. The crème-de-la-crème among the wines found here is the 2000 Gold - Late Harvest Botrytis Riesling, aptly called a "dessert in a bottle". A point to note is that Deerfield has won 32 gold, 48 silver and 2 bronze medals in 41 national and regional competitions. Wine worth its price, one would say!

This winery was built by the owner himself, who painstakingly put it together with his own hands. Its two-foot thick walls with elegant floral paintings make the place a delight in itself. The wines add to the pleasure. The luscious grapes are a treat to view, especially during harvest, when they bounce tantalizingly in carts hurtling off to the winepress. Rolling picnic grounds can be used for a lazy lunch, with the accompaniment of oddly-named reds, such as Nuns Canyon Syrah, or familiar whites, such as the Chardonnay. Stop at the wine shop that does brisk business, despite the slightly pricey labels. A 10% discount is available on the purchase of 12 bottles or more. A limited collection of wines are found here, and for good reason. Owners Fred and Ginger take great pains to clear land, plant the groves, prune and harvest grapes. And that's only just the beginning of the procedure. An arduous blending procedure, which includes filtering and storing, results in streams of the glittering, delicious fluid, with rich textures. The bottles too, are designed to attract, with their smart colors and classy labels. The specialty of the place is the divine dessert wine - Moscato Del Millenio. Book a date with them and let the wines carry you away!

Now, a second generation of fine wines rules the roost, for the Fisher children carry on the trade as a tribute to the fruitful land they are blessed with. Visitors are welcomed to the exquisite vineyards, but you will miss out on the riot of colors during harvest, as they are closed due to the full-blown activity on the part of the team. Let the tastes make up for it, though. Fisher sells blends, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Coach Insignia and Cameron, along with some delicious Vineyard Designated Wines, of which the Wedding Vineyard is highly appreciated. Visits require a 7 day notice, so let anticipation lead you on while you wait!

It is well matured, just like its wines, for Foppiano has been around since 1896. Their wines may be found all over the US, and they export a big chunk of their produce too. Success has not marred the passion or the humility of the business, though, for the tightly knit family has retained its independence over the years. Petite Sirah, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir and other favorites are crafted with special flavors and one can find very affordable stuff under its Riverside By Foppiano label. Should you decide to spend the day with them, stroll into the magical gardens and relish a picnic lunch, with a complimentary tasting as a prelude.

This little winery may not be easy to find, but it's worth the search. The vineyards are extensive and fruitful, and the view from the grounds adds to the experience. Viognier, syrah, cinsaut, merlot, carignane, grenache, grenache blanc and counoise grapes are all ripened to perfection before being crushed to form fine wine at Frick. Traditional methods are employed here, including the arduous task of punching the cap by hand during fermentation. No wonder the wines are delicious! You won't find these wines freely available, as the production is on a small scale.

So incredible are the views of the Mayacamas Mountains from this winery that when owner Rick Kasmier and his wife Sandi came here for the first time, they couldn't help but drop anchor. The basement became the wine production house and vineyard and wine-tasting room began in 2003. With an annual production of 1000 cases, Kaz is the smallest winery in the wine country of Sonoma. Kasmier has created his own label of vintage with hand-colored family photos on it. Come by to feast on some rare varieties like the Lenoir, Malbec, Barbera and DeChaunac. He claims to be one of the only two people in California to grow Lenoir - a French-American hybrid grape producing the darkest juice ever. Get your family along to spend the weekend and the dwelling place will be taken care of - the Little House at this place can accommodate up to two couples or a family and is equipped with a BBQ and wood fire place.

Most guys can only take wine tasting and sophisticated talking for so long. A visit to the Lagunitas Brewing Company seems the polar opposite of a visit to a vineyard. The company's flagship India Pale Ale has consistently been the best selling IPA in California. But 'management' Tony Magee doesn't take himself too seriously, The boss is usually seen strumming his guitar while the factory has hard-rock blaring. Apart from casual tours, the Lagunitas Brewing Company is also known to throw Thursdays-tasting parties. If not anything else, it's worth a visit only to try the "Brown Shugga", "Hairy Eyeball Ale" and "Undercover Investigation Shutdown Ale!"

The Ridge at Lytton Springs follows the traditional methods of crushing grapes for the wine and ingredients available on the estate are used for fermentation. What further attracts visitors to this estate is the importance given to ecological sustainability. The estate uses rice straw bales as its walls to ensure air and light flow through. No conventional electrical air conditioning techniques are used in the building and the winery for cooling during the summer. The straw in the walls allow cool air to flow in. Solar power is used for drawing energy supply to the entire winery and estate. The estate and the straw covered tasting room is beautiful and a visit is highly recommended to this hundred year old vineyard.

Dedications come in all forms; books, art, music...but how about naming a brand after your favorite pet? That's what's happened at the Wine Room, where Barney, one of the winery's regular canine visitors, has inspired the owners to come up with a wine named after him. This pooch must have really charmed his masters, for he is often present in person to paw-to-graph bottles carrying his name. Is your pet jealous? Send in its photograph and if it's cute enough, it just might have its name on the next release!
