There are any number of guided tours available, but you may want an introduction to the Napa Valley Wine Country a bit more dignified than that afforded by bus tours that herd you in and out of wineries chosen less for their quality than their ability to accommodate and sell their product to large groups.

Some interesting alternatives:
By Train
First, the Wine Train. This renovated, 1940s era train takes a leisurely three-and-a-half-hours to chug from downtown Napa to St. Helena and back, giving you a comfortable, elevated view of the vineyards. A gourmet meal is provided in the dining car, and wine tasting takes place in the lushly appointed 1917 Pullman lounge. Special trains stop at selected wineries for tours and events.

By Bike
Second, the bicycle: Napa's relatively flat terrain and unhurried pace makes for excellent cycling. Bicycles can be rented at cycleries throughout the valley (Napa Valley Bike Tours in Napa, St. Helena Cyclery and Calistoga's Getaway Bike Shop are a few locations); there's no reason you can't take one of the following self-guided tours on two wheels instead of four--or at least as much of them as you have time for. Fully supported one-day or multi-day bike trips are offered by Getaway Adventures (+1 800 499 2453), St. Helena Cyclery, Napa Valley Cyclery (+1 707 255 3377) or Backroads Bicycle Tours (+1 510 527 1555).

By Balloon
Third, by balloon. Try Napa Valley Balloons (+1 707 253 2224) and Balloons Above the Valley (+1 707 253 2222). The tours give you an exhilarating, 90-minute birds-eye view of the Wine Country, and usually end with a champagne brunch.

If you want to explore the valley rim by jeep, glider, or even goat (yes, goat), you can. (Wine Country Jeep Tours: +1 800 539 5337; Calistoga Gliders: +1 707 942-5000; Calistoga Pack Goats +1 707 942 5504.)

Hop on this train and experience a first-class meal and fine wines as you tour Wine County. The train offers a champagne brunch, casual lunches and fancy dinners. It is ideal for romantic dinners, executive parties and tourist excursions. The train's decor is elegant, though daytime travels are casual. Take in the sights both outdoor and indoor: mahogany, brass and etched glass in the restored 1917 Pullman Dining Car. At the McKinstry Street Station starting point, you will find a handful of charming little shops that specialize in wine (of course), gourmet foods and gifts.
