Centrally located piano bar |
30 Via S. Maria a Cappella Vecchia Naples 80121 Italy +39 81 764 4689 |
This pub is in a zone which is one of the most beautiful and elegant areas by day and a world of fun and entertainment in the evening. Thursday night parties (entitled "Tuca Tuca/ Studio 54") are fabulous and they highlight the best and the worst of the '70s. The decor is extremely trendy with lamps sunk into the walls; furniture without harsh edges giving it an air of effortless comfort and colour, the atmosphere is electric though not overbearingly so. Originally the Teatro del Fondo |
Piazza Municipio Naples 80133 Italy +39 81 551 3396 |
The Teatro Mercadente was originally called the Teatro del Fondo, named after the military society that built it in 1778 with the confiscated proceeds of the dissolved Jesuit order. It was opened in 1779 with Giovamattista's opera, 'L'infedele Fedele,' with music by the maestro Cimarosa. It was not until 1870 that the theatre became the Teatro Mercadente in homage to the musician of the same name who was educated in Naples. Dedicated specifically to opera, it played an active role in the political and cultural changes introduced by the Partenopean Republic in 1799. With the Restoration, it regained its operatic function when it welcomed musicians such as Rossini, Bellini, Doninzetti and Verdi. In 1914 it held a controversial, futuristic soiree organised by Marinetti and later, his great protagonists were Marta Abba and Luigi Pirandello. Restoration works were carried out between 1920 and 1938. In 1936 the ceiling was adorned with a painting in tempera by Francisco Galante called 'Napoli Marinara.' In 1963 it was closed as it was structurally unstable, finally being restored by the town council in 1979. Between 1980 and 1990 there was a varied programme; from 1995 to the present day there have been some interesting theatrical themes proposed by Naples town council and other bodies that have helped to increase cultural awareness in the city. The theatre has 604 seats, with 9 dressing rooms, meeting rooms seating 110 and boxes over 12 meters long. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Naple's opera house |
93f Via San Carlo Naples 80133 Italy +39 81 797 2111 |
Commissioned by King Charles of Bourbon, Europe's oldest working theatre was built in 1737. It wasn't long before its magnificent architecture and exquisite blue, gold and silver décor, complimented by a program with wider public appeal, was attracting praise from both home and abroad. Completely destroyed by a fire in 1816, Ferdinand I of Bourbon ordered the theatre to be rebuilt just six days later. As a result the acoustics, still regarded as perfect, were improved and the stage extended. The opera season begins in January in Naples. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Historic 18th century theatre |
157 Via Chiaia Naples 80121 Italy +39 81 41 1723 |
Historical 18th century theatre, in the heart of Naples' old town, characterised by marvellous, rococo style architecture. The extensive building has a large stalls area with velours seats and a long series with boxes and mini boxes among which the central royal box stands out for its regal elegance. This theatre was the centre of theatrical activity for the famous Neapolitan comical actress, Luisa Conte and her grandiose company, much loved by the locals, for around 20 years. Today, since the actress' death her place has been taken by the great young actress Lara Sansone who, together with the Sanazzaro theatre company, now brings to the stage the Neapolitan comedies of times gone by, a comedy which mirrors the heart of Naples' historical centre.
