Home of the Vanderbilt Commodores basketball team, this venue can seat up to 14,000 spectators. It was dedicated as a memorial in honor of the heroes of World War II. The structure combines a gymnasium and a concert hall designed by architect Edwin Keeble. A $25 million renovation project added a new practice gym, a three cross-court playing floor, coaching offices, donor room, a Hall of Champions, private suites, and a new lighting and sound system. AAA affiliate of Major League Baseball's Pittsburgh Pirates, the Sounds have been a Nashville tradition since 1978. Attendance is consistently near capacity in downtown Greer Stadium and every seat is a good one. A note for baseball fans: Don Mattingly spent some time in Nashville as a Sound. Part of the Winston Cup circuit in NASCAR auto racing, the Nashville Speedway hosts two Winston contests, two Busch series races and one NASCAR Truck event. From April to November, professional stock car drivers compete for big money and points toward the NASCAR Championship. Amateur races take place on the weekends when the big boys aren't in town. In addition to the Ryman Auditorium, the Gaylord Entertainment Center, the Hall of Fame Park, Lower Broadway Street and the Hilton Suites Park all play host to this well-attended show. It is located in the heart of the campus, and also has an enviable 17,000 square foot pressbox, with four levels and two elevators.
