This is a fun place to eat breakfast or lunch. Portraits of great artists like Van Gough and rock musician Jerry Garcia hang on the walls. Top your bagel with roast beef, ham, bacon and tomato spread and you have a "Hoss Cartwright." It's just one of the signature bagels offered here. The most popular offering is the spinach Parmesan bagel with artichoke-parmesan cream cheese. The "Pedro Gonzales," with turkey, green chilies and jalapeno spread, makes a real impression on the taste buds.

It's rare that an Italian restaurant is not romantic. Yet this one breaks the rules and caters to families rather than young lovers. Plentiful portions of pasta—Angel Hair, Fettuccine, Penne, Linguini—are served with creamy Alfredo, Pesto or hearty Marinara Sauces. Thin crust pizzas are topped with creative selections like Gouda cheese, spinach and smoked chicken. The veal is delicious and all entrees are served with fresh baked bread and Caesar Salad. There's a limited wine list, and the bar serves mixed drinks and beer. Call for Sunday timings.

Cheeseburgers seem like pretty simple fare, but this lively diner offers an interesting twist on the American classic. How about an all-beef patty grilled with mixed vegetables, or a black bean burger? What about a beefalo burger or a nice turkey burger? These are healthy alternatives, containing less than seven grams of fat per serving. Burger purists can still opt for the greasier variety of burger, and no one should pass up the fries. Pizza can be a work of art, especially when you have the right brush with which to paint. How about 30 different toppings to decorate the canvas? Pepperoni, oysters, basil, pesto, roasted chicken and artichoke hearts are all on your pallet. Want cheese on your pie? How about feta, Gouda, Swiss or cheddar? You'll need a canvas to paint on, and your masterpiece can be served on thick or thin crust, with pesto or tomato sauce. If you aren't in the mood to be creative, let the experts serve up one of their own creations. Don't let the 'retro' décor at this diner fool you. The owner didn't redecorate to fit the current trend; he hasn't changed a thing since the shop opened in the 1950s. The great food and service that made this famous also remain the same. Burgers and shakes are the standard here, but you can also get a good 'meat-and-three' meal as well. While this Nashville landmark was made famous by the movie, "Sweet Dreams: The Patsy Cline Story" starring Jessica Lange, its popularity with downtown workers and Vanderbilt University students is attributed mainly to its casual atmosphere and delicious food.

Since moving to its new location in Nashville, this popular cafeteria has gained a whole new clientele without losing any of its loyal customers. Entrees change daily, but there's always a good selection of Southern dishes, including fresh vegetables like turnip greens and sweet corn. One taste of the Fried Chicken will conjure up memories of spreading out a blanket in the park for a Sunday picnic. Don't forget to save room for hot apple pie and fruit cobbler, prepared each morning.

TGI Friday's

Comfortable Atmosphere, Fun Food
5 Opry Mills Drive
Nashville, TN 37214
United States
+1 615 514 4900
http://www.tgifridays.com/
The TGI Friday's is one of the most popular joints around Nashville. Crowds flock here for familiar favorites like Shrimp Friday's or the Texas Skewers (beef, chicken and shrimp sauteed and served with veggies on long skewers). This is the same as any other Friday's you've seen, except that each night the manager instructs the kitchen to "work up" a special item. It may be fried catfish with sauteed onions or a tasty slice of spinach and pesto pizza. Whatever they come up with, diners delight in the change of pace. The bar stays open until 3am and provides libations of all types: import and domestic beers, mixed drinks and a fair wine selection.

Don't expect a seat at the sushi bar here because there is no sushi bar! However, the sushi tastes just as good served at your table. This simple eatery has been serving Nashville's fastest Japanese food for years, and with the addition of sushi to the menu, new patrons are discovering the place every day. Choose from simple teriyaki dishes or opt for the udon or noodle dinners. Sushi comes in a variety of combination platters featuring delicious rolls and a side dish. A typical meal will cost $5-$6, and that includes a beverage. The restaurant serves no alcohol, not even hot sake.

Southern cuisine is not all about fried chicken, fried green tomatoes, and ham. Try a traditional southern delacy, called tea cakes at this restaurant-cum-bakery, made famous by the Oprah Winfrey Show. These tasty vanilla wafers are made fresh at this delightful bakery. They serve tea cakes and light, fluffy cupcakes that makes for a delectable dessert or teatime accompaniment. Speaking of tea, the shop serves several varieties, including chamomile and Earl Grey.

Couples love getting cozy in this charming bistro-style neighborhood restaurant. Exposed brick walls bedecked with contemporary art give the place an urban feel that local trendsetters appreciate. Health nuts dig the place for the healthy fare and focus on innovative veggie cuisine, although you will find your share of meateater classics like steak and pork chops on the menu. A favorite is "Tortilla Cats," a catfish fillet lightly fried in a tortilla crust with black beans, rice and salsa. Happy hour is M-F 4p-6:30p.

The tall windows along the front of the restaurant offer a striking view of the Nashville skyline, and the elegant decor makes this the perfect setting for a business dinner or a romantic evening with your spouse. Crisp, starched white tablecloths on candlelit tables set the mood for the delicious Italian dishes served by chef Frederick Brooker. Menu favorites include Fettucine Alfredo, Shrimp Scampi and a sinfully rich Manicotti. The Caesar Salad is almost a meal in itself and the Lamb Chops are the signature special of the house. Have a drink at the bar while you wait for your table, or sit on the patio and enjoy the company of friends while you linger over a glass of chardonnay.

No outside light finds its way into the house, which creates a dimly romantic setting. Intimate and private, this is a favorite choice for amorous couples looking for a night out. Enjoy traditional Italian cuisine featuring veal, chicken and pasta dishes, served with a Caesar salad prepared at your table. Lasagna is the house specialty, and it is excellent. The chef has no fear of extra cheese (low fat eaters beware), and the sauces are rich and spicy. An extensive wine list and other beverages tempt the palate.

A hankering for hometown chow can be satisfied at the White Trash Cafe like no place else. Real country cookin' in every sense of the word is all you'll find any day of the week. Peach cobbler and sweet tea top off the menu's delights. This eatery is even more authentic with its crazy, country decor. Ancient car parts and farm memorabilia cover the walls inside and out. And its all for sale. Proceeds are donated to Nashville charities. - Kelly Sons
