Arthur Ashe Jr. was the first African-American to win the U.S. Open Championship and Wimbledon, and the first to be included in the U.S. Davis Cup team in 1963. In 1988, he was diagnosed with AIDS. Today, his memory lives on with a memorial that he would have been proud of. The Arthur Ashe Stadium is a four-level structure featuring state-of-the-art broadcast and audio systems, 90 luxury suites, five restaurants, a two-level players' lounge, and individual seating for 22,547 fans.

This racing park is home to the Belmont Stakes, the last race of the Triple Crown. Organized by the New York Racing Association, this Grade I stakes race takes place in June at the Belmont Park in Elmont. The first race was held in June 1866. The event is named after the financer, Belmont Senior. Riders from various nations compete for the prestigious blanket of white carnations worn by the winner each year. Belmont Stakes is a part of the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing and is considered a prominent event in New York. Come watch the race and check if your sight can travel faster than the horses, as riders make their way to the finishing line with grace and speed.

Step back into New York's early history in this sprawling complex. There are 19th, 18th and 17th century buildings, including an original (moved) structure from 1685. Christmas is a month long celebration, and summer displays are hosted by staff in period costume.

Keyspan Park is home to the Brooklyn Cyclones. The ballpark is built on the same template as most others. However, it deftly makes use of the surrounding attractions. A few blocks away from here is Astroland, the amusement park at Coney Island; it makes for a wonderful view over the left field fence. Towards the right field wall are the endless blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean. It's a spectacular place to watch a game and the unmistakable energy of the Brooklyn fans just adds to the excitement.

In 1963, original Jets owner Leon Hess purchased a failing football team called the New York Titans. He renamed the team, and in 1969 the Jets won their only Super Bowl title. The team has since moved to Giants Stadium at the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford, NJ (also home to the New York Giants football team), but most people still consider the Jets to be a New York team. Tickets are next to impossible to get, but you can always watch the game on television.

This structure is termed as the 'oldest exponent of fine arts and entertainment' in New Jersey. Set up in 1925, it was initially called the Salaam Temple and was renamed Newark Symphony Hall towards the late 70s. The exterior of the building is laced with huge imposing columns, whereas the interior is designed in Egyptian and Greek styles. Luciano Pavarotti, Sarah Vaughan, Marian Anderson, Lily Pons, the Boston and Cleveland Symphony Orchestras, and the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo have performed at this venue. It has a 2,800-seater hall, a 1,000-seater Terrace Ballroom, a 200-seater box theater and a dance studio.

This theatre first took refuge in the ruins of a paper mill in 1934. Its founders Antoinette Scudder and Frank Carrington staged the first production, 'The Kingdom of God', in 1938. For over 30 years, West Indian Americans have been celebrating their history with this five-day carnival. The festivities include concerts, a Children's Carnival (a parade for kids between St. John's Place and Kingston Avenue in Brooklyn), costume competitions, and the West Indian American Day Parade. It is perhaps best known by the vibrant dress of the marchers and dancers, and these costumes are often works of art depicting aspects of the rich and eclectic history of the Caribbean people.

Yogi Berra Stadium

Built in 1998, this stadium is the home of the New Jersey Jackals. It hosts baseball games in the Northern League, and can seat up to thousands of spectators. It also has a museum dedicated to Yogi Berra, so if you are a fan of the great man, make sure you visit it on your next visit. Tickets are available at the venue and all major credit cards are accepted.
