A night at the New York City Opera is like an elegant excursion through time and culture. Since it came into existence in 1943, the institution has provided the public with reasonably priced tickets earning the name "the people's opera company." In a genre full of old standards, the NYCO features performances of contemporary and often overlooked works. In addition, many works performed are from American authors. The company makes its home at the New York State Theatre in Lincoln Center.

New York Shakespeare Festival in the Park

The Bard in Central Park
81st Street
(Delacorte Theater)
New York, NY 10024
United States
+1 212 539 8500
http://www.publictheater.org/
The plays produced by the New York Shakespeare Festival and held in the Delacorte open-air theater every summer are free. In the past, they have attracted such big-name actors as Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline and Christopher Walken. However, the wait for tickets is certainly a test of endurance the line stretches forever, and it is quite possible that after suffering from the heat, bugs and lack of shade, you will be told that a show is sold out. If you manage to get a ticket, the recently renovated theater provides a lovely setting.

New York's St. Patrick's Day Parade, held in March, is one of the city's largest and most popular parades and one of the oldest in the country; it began in 1762. Large crowds line Fifth Avenue to watch the pipe bands, soldiers, Irish-American organizations, leprechauns and scores of local politicians as they make their way along the Upper East Side. One of the best places to view the parade is on the steps of St. Patrick's Cathedral on the corner of 51st Street and Fifth Avenue. Admission is free.
