Located in a stunning townhouse across from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Goethe Institut is New York City's German culture center. It offers gallery shows, lectures, readings and occasional film screenings, as well as other events. The Institut, part of a worldwide network, also serves as a resource center. It has a large library of German writers and material about Germany, and offers material for use in German-language classes. Most of the gallery shows are free; times vary, so call for information.
