This is a historic settlement of free African-Americans, which was founded in 1838 in what is today the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn. During violent draft riots of 1863, the community served as a refuge for hundreds of African-Americans who fled Manhattan. The houses were designated as a New York City landmark in 1970. This is worth a trip if you have children, since most of the tours are geared towards students from grade one to twelve. Review © 2009, Wcities |
