This tour covers many of the famous museums on the city's Upper East Side, near Central Park.

Guggenheim Museum - The Guggenheim is located at Fifth Avenue and 88th Street. Take the number 4, 5 or 6 train to 86th Street. Upon exiting the train, walk west on 86th Street to Central Park. Turn right, walking north, parallel to the park and the Museum will be on the right.

Designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright, this mammoth spiral structure inspires as much debate as the art it houses. The museum permanently displays works by Chagall, Picasso, Kandinsky, Klee, Van Gogh and many others. The Guggenheim also mounts temporary shows.

Upon leaving the Guggenheim, cross Fifth Avenue and turn left. Walk south, parallel to Central Park for several blocks. As you walk, you will see some of New York's poshest apartment buildings facing the park along Fifth Avenue.

Metropolitan Museum of Art - Built in 1870, the vast Metropolitan Museum of Art houses numerous collections that rank among the finest in the world. Tours and talks are available. Popular exhibits include the Egyptian Collection and the Temple of Dendur, European Paintings and the Medieval Art Room.

Whitney Museum of American Art - Exit the Met and cross Fifth Avenue. Turn left on 82nd Street and walk to Madison Avenue. Cross Madison Avenue and turn right. Walk south on Madison until you reach 75th Street. The Whitney Museum of American Art is located at 75th and Madison. There is a small permanent exhibit, but the focus is on temporary shows.

Frick Collection - Exit the Whitney and cross Madison Avenue. Turn right on 74th Street and walk west towards Fifth Avenue. Turn left on Fifth Avenue. The Frick Collection is located on Fifth Avenue at 70th Street.

The Frick Collection building impresses as much as its art collection. Once the private mansion of steel magnate Henry Clay Frick, it reminds New Yorkers of the city's opulent past. Its collection includes masterworks by Rembrandt, Vermeer and El Greco.

Right in the heart of Manhattan stands this oasis of rolling pastures and gardens, stretching from Midtown to Harlem. It was created in 1857 by Frederick Law Olmstead and Calvert Vaux. These days walkers, rollerbladers, bikers and joggers compete for space. Lovers meet at Bethseda Fountain on Bethseda Terrace. To the north, others wonder at the mystery of Belvedere Castle. Nearby is the Delacorte Theater, where you can watch plays in the summer. Across the park lies a charming Central Park Wildlife Conservation Center, and children of all ages love the restored carousel.

This impressive Fifth Avenue mansion was the former residence of coke and steel magnate Henry Clay Frick. It was the owner's wish that his art collection remain on display there after his death. The mansion was built in 1914, but was made to look much older. The gilded, ornamental décor is the perfect setting for exhibits which include masterpieces by Vermeer, Goya and Rembrandt. Stroll in the tranquility of the beautiful outdoor garden. Enjoy a Friday evening carafe of wine in the Garden Court, cash wine bar available after 6:30pm.

Guggenheim Museum

Modern art in Manhattan

New York, NY 10128-0173

The Guggenheim is admired as much for its architecture as its art. The building was designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The bright white exterior and glass-domed interior combine to give the museum a modern, clean feel. Renovation work, undertaken in the early 1990s, added a 10-story tower; the extra space contains a sculpture collection and café overlooking Central Park. Exhibits include work by the impressionists Kadinsky, Paul Klee and Picasso.

Upper East Side

New York
United States
This part of Manhattan, the area between Central Park and the East River, has some of the most expensive real estate in the country. Park, Fifth, and Madison have always been posh avenues; whether in the gilded mansions of yesterday or the area's highrise modern apartments, old money and high society have long made their home here. Consequently, shops to serve them line Madison Avenue, while Baby Gap coexists with art galleries and antique shops. Further east, new money has overtaken the old Yorkville slum. Manhattan hosts some of the world's most famous museums and cultural institutions, and the string of them along Fifth Avenue is called "Museum Mile." The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim, the Jewish Museum, and El Museo del Barrio are just a few, and they will be joined by the Museum for African Art in 2008.

Whitney Museum of American Art

American museum
945 Madison Avenue at 75th Street
New York, NY 10021
United States

This museum places an emphasis on modern American art. It has grown in popularity in recent years, and thanks to an expansion in 1998 there is now a permanent collection on display. Select pieces are housed in the Leonard and Evelyn Lauder Galleries on the fifth floor, including art by Edward Hopper, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Alexander Calder. The building itself is an extraordinary sight, designed by Marcel Breuer, it resembles an upside down pyramid.
