Cave of the Winds

Catwalk adventures behind the falls
Exit 141 off I-25
Niagara Falls, NY 14303
Canada
+1 716 278 1730
Short of going over the falls in a barrel, there are fewer places closer to the action than this series of walkways beneath Bridal Veil Falls. Located on Goat Island, this was once a cave but water erosion has made it too dangerous to explore. An elevator takes visitors to the base of the American Falls where wooden stairs and pathways bring them within 25 feet of the falls. You're advised to wear the raincoat and foot coverings as splashings are frequent. There is also a walk called the Gorge Trip with an incredible view.

It all began 12,000 years ago when a huge trench was carved to create this spectacular natural wonder. At the time, the Falls were about 7 miles down river in the Lewiston-Queenston area. In their present position, the Horseshoe Falls (170 feet high and 2,500 feet wide) on the Canadian side and the American Bridal Veil Falls (180 feet tall and 1,100 feet wide) are eroding at the rate of about 6 feet each year. Together, they pour about 200,000 cubic feet of water every second over the brink.

If the thunder of the Falls isn't enough to stir the soul, then this display of lighting legerdemain should definitely do the trick. Operating on the auspices of the Niagara Parks Commission, the nightly illumination features 21 xenon lights with 18 in the Illumination Tower near the Queen Victoria Park area, and three opposite the American Falls. How bright are these lights? One spotlight gives off 250 million candlepower! That's quite a step up from the first lights used in 1879 with an illuminating power of 32,000 candles.

This is the reward for all the times your parents punished you for playing in the tub. Waves is a one of a kind indoor water park in the city that loves water. A retractable roof covers the 25,000 square foot water park which includes body slides of all sizes, a beach entry wave pool, interactive play structures and an arcade. If you think this place is only for toddlers, think again. Waves also has a 16 person hot spa and a full service food and bar service to satiate the appetite that's bound to be worked up!

Designed by Spanish engineer Leonardo Torres Quevedo in 1913 and opened in 1916, tWhirlpool Aero Car offers a fantastic view of Niagara's Whirlpool, the Gorge, and the Falls about 3 kilometres to the south of the Falls. The round trip, in a suspended 40-passenger car held by six steel cables, is about one kilometre and takes 10 minutes. The car has been modernized, with the latest update taking place in 1987.

Located at the narrowest point of the Niagara River, a few kilometres north of the Falls, this adventure offers visitors a spectacular view of some of the wildest whitewater anywhere. You can walk along a boardwalk a few feet away from the swirling waters. You can even see the remains of the Great Gorge Scenic Railway, once used to ferry people around the Gorge and now being slowly destroyed by the waters.

Many couples choose to celebrate their wedding ceremonies here, in either the Niagara Wedding Chapel or the Falls Wedding Chapel. The garden is a glass-enclosed tropical space with waterfalls, ponds and 7,000 trees. A relaxing place to visit—be it in between sightseeing tours or on a rainy day. Admission is free.

What do you get if you cross a play-school with a zoo with a birthday party with an amusement park? You get ZOOZ! A hop-skip and jump away from the Falls, Zooz is a wildlife nature park spread over 44 hectares housing over 400 domestic, exotic and endangered species. It also has a petting zoo that kids can never seem to get enough of. That's not all. Zooz has a catch-and-release fishing pond, plenty of open space for kite flying, a children's play area, a splash pool, movies, concerts and lots more. Phew! It's is an ideal excursion destination for schools or as a fun day out as a family. It's tiring being a kid, but with a place like this, who's complaining?!
