This museum is dedicated to those who have tried to tame the Niagara Falls in some way; be it Nicola Tesla and his power generation, or Sam Patch who, in 1829, jumped from a 70 foot high platform into the Niagara River. Close to Lockport's historic Erie Canal district, this museum, a complex of historic buildings, features a comprehensive history of the region over the last two centuries. By constantly updating displays and tours, the museum includes everything from toys and medical memorabilia to a Victorian parlor and Civil War room. Among the buildings on the complex are: Pioneer and Transportation with the first air-conditioned car; Fire House with antique pumper; and Yates Farm Barn with blacksmith display and old sleds. Sponsored by the New York Power Authority, this spectacular visitors' center in Lewiston is located approximately 35-minutes north of Buffalo. The center features hands-on displays, a virtual tour of a generating plant and computer games involving electricity. The free-admission center, which attracts more than 150,000 visitors annually, is perched 350 feet above the Niagara Gorge for a once-in-a-lifetime view. A USD1.2 million fishing pier at the base of the center allows anglers to try their luck directly in the Niagara River. Facilities include a fish cleaning station and public restrooms. Once an important military post during the War of 1812, this fort today serves as a faithful recreation of those times, complete with guards dressed in period clothing, rooms frozen in time and re-enactments of the battles of the day. Reconstructed and administered by the Niagara Parks Commission, the fort features a gift shop, snack bar, picnic area, and playground for kids. Located north of the Rainbow Bridge in the Niagara Reservation State Park, this geological museum offers visitors a multi-screen show on the 12,000-year history of the Niagara Gorge and Falls. Built in 1971 on the site of the Schoellkopf Hydro Electric Generating Station #3, destroyed by a rockslide in 1956, the museum was designed to look like a water turbine.
