Tribute to glorious victory |

Situated within Queenston Heights Park about 10 kilometres north of the Falls, this monument serves as a tribute to Major-General Isaac Brock, the British commander who lost his life here defending the area during the War of 1812. Fifty-six metres high, the impressive monument was built in 1856 and replaces an earlier one blown up by a massive gunpowder blast in 1840. The last remaining local example from the Golden Age of funiculars in the late 19th century, this incline railway transports visitors from the Falls view area parking lot to the Table Rock observation plaza, a rise of 100 feet. The railway carries close to three-quarter million passengers a year for a trip that takes under a minute. Owned and operated by the Niagara Parks Commission, the railway began operating in 1966 and has been ferrying 1600 passengers an hour ever since. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Administered and cared for by the Niagara Parks Commission, this clock presents an ever-changing display April to October and attracts visitors like bees to honey. Located close to the shores of the Niagara River and directly across from the city power reservoir about 10 km north of the Falls, the clock was first set up by Ontario Hydro in 1950. It all began 12,000 years ago when a huge trench was carved to create Niagara Falls—spectacular natural wonder. At the time, the Falls were about 7 miles down river in the Lewiston-Queenston area. In their present position, the Horseshoe Falls (170 feet high and 2,500 feet wide) on the Canadian side and the American Bridal Veil Falls (180 feet tall and 1,100 feet wide) are eroding at the rate of about 6 feet each year. Together, they pour about 200,000 cubic feet of water every second over the brink. Come the Winter holiday season, the Falls are beguilingly decked out for the annual Winter Festival of Lights. Built by the Niagara Parks Commission in 1945, this greenhouse serves as a display for visitors and also as the seed house for the plants used throughout the Niagara Falls parks system. Just 500 yards south of the Falls, the greenhouse features a reception centre and a garden for the visually impaired with all plant tags in Braille. Described by Winston Churchill as "the prettiest Sunday afternoon drive in the world," the Niagara Parks Commission adminstered trail, runs 58 kilometres from Historic Fort George in Niagara-on-the-Lake to Fort Erie. Used by non-motorized traffic, the trail divides into four sections, each taking up to two hours by bike. The trail records the history of the region and was a popular route for both American and British troops during the War of 1812. If the thunder of the Falls isn't enough to stir the soul, then this display of lighting legerdemain should definitely do the trick. Operating on the auspices of the Niagara Parks Commission, the nightly illumination features 21 xenon lights with 18 in the Illumination Tower near the Queen Victoria Park area, and three opposite the American Falls. How bright are these lights? One spotlight gives off 250 million candlepower! That's quite a step up from the first lights used in 1879 with an illuminating power of 32,000 candles. Built in 1937 to serve as the formal entrance to Queen Victoria Park, this amphitheatre combines natural flower and shrub elements with a fan-shaped pergola, Queenston limestone and ornamental gates to create a wonderful space for concerts and other events held throughout the year. The theatre, maintained by the Niagara Parks Commission, was once the site of the Clifton Hotel, and part of the hotel's foundation has been incorporated into its design. Scene of one of the fiercest battles in the War of 1812, this park located at the northern end of Niagara Falls along the river also marks the start of the Bruce Trail. The park features two significant monuments: one to Major-General Isaac Brock for his victory here; the other to Laura Secord, who warned the British that the Americans were about to attack. As the name indicates, it overlooks the Robert Moses Plant Reservoir where there are plenty of fish biting. Then, when the white stuff falls, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and sledding are the seasonal favorites. Anytime, a quiet walk along the nature trail is a peaceful way to end the day. Towering 775 feet above the Falls, this tower is so high and close to the border, it needed special permission from both Canadian and U.S. authorities to be built. It has three glass-encased elevators that bring you to a top-floor observation deck, two restaurants; the Revolving Dining Room and the Summit Suite Dining Room; a shopping center and a large amusement arcade. Designed by Spanish engineer Leonardo Torres Quevedo in 1913 and opened in 1916, tWhirlpool Aero Car offers a fantastic view of Niagara's Whirlpool, the Gorge, and the Falls about 3 kilometres to the south of the Falls. The round trip, in a suspended 40-passenger car held by six steel cables, is about one kilometre and takes 10 minutes. The car has been modernized, with the latest update taking place in 1987. Located about 2.5 miles north of the Falls, this park offers a spectacular view of both the Giant Whirlpool on the Canadian side and the vicious rapids at the 90-degree bend in the Niagara River. The first is visible from the top of the Gorge; the other at the base following a 30-minute hike. The park's 109 acres feature biking trails, picnic tables, playground, fishing, and cross-country skiing in the winter. Located at the narrowest point of the Niagara River, a few kilometres north of the Falls, this adventure offers visitors a spectacular view of some of the wildest whitewater anywhere. You can walk along a boardwalk a few feet away from the swirling waters.
