This festival, put on by the city of Port Colborne, is in honour of the world-famous Welland Canal, which starts here and winds its way to Lake Ontario. Over 100,000 visitors come for a community-wide celebration that includes tall ship cruises, multi-cultural events and cuisine, a kids' area, live concerts, an antique car and motorcycle show, and a massive fireworks display. Admission is free. While you're in the area, about a 15-minute drive south from the Falls, visit some of the local attractions such as Historic Fort Erie. A major annual event, this 16-day folk arts festival in downtown St Catharines celebrates the cultural diversity of the area and brings together the arts, cuisines, crafts, and entertainment from various communities that have settled here. Sponsored by the St Catharines Downtown Association, the festival kicks off with a three-day folk arts event at Montebello Park, followed by more than 30 events featuring local artists, merchants, restaurateurs, and musicians. Located on Merritt Island in the middle of the city of Welland, south of Niagara Falls, this annual two-day food festival is a veritable gourmet delight. Over 40 restaurants from across the region prepare dishes, and wine from the region's world-class wineries is provided for sampling. The festival also offers replenishment for the spirit, with wonderful musical entertainment, and culminates with a spectacular fireworks display sponsored by Casino Niagara. Admission is free. Celebrating one of the region's most successful products, several wineries invite guests to come out and take part in icewine making, sample some of the goodies, and enjoy a fine meal. Among the wineries involved in the two-day event in late January are Chateau des Charmes, Joseph's Estate, Inniskillin Wines, and Hillebrand Estates. The various wineries each offer their own take on the icewine festival, from simple tastings to full-blown meals. Located at the Niagara Regional Exhibition Grounds in Welland, south of the Falls, it provides four days of fun for the entire family. This annual fair is in the magnificent gardens of the Festival Theatre, gives fans an opportunity to meet members of the Shaw Festival company in a more informal setting. The fair features a dunk tank starring one of the brave actors, games and races for the kids, homemade goodies and local preserves, and off-the-cuff entertainment. Welland's signature annual event, the June rose festival celebrates the town's cultural diversity, sports, arts and crafts community, and the coming of summer. Featured in the celebrations are a LobsterFest, coronation ball, baby show, juried arts show, and day in the park. For kids, there's an illusionist and a day-long fishing derby. The festival culminates with the parade, which runs along the West Canal between Ontario and Humberstone Roads. Touted as Canada's largest light festival, this annual event from the first Saturday in November through the beginning of January combines incredible landscape lighting with live concerts, parades, fireworks, and a spectacular New Year's Eve celebration shown live around the world all with the Falls as a backdrop. The festival kicks off with several weekend Disney shows, making this event a perfect family outing. As well, there's the Annual Niagara Talent Showcase, Candles in the Park, and a Tribute to Elvis.
