1 Esplanade du Président Kennedy Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6300 France +33 4 9392 8300 http://www.nice-acropolis.com/ |
The Acropolis Exhibition Centre, composed of the Palais des Congrès and the Palais des Expositions, is a modern and well-equipped facility that stages business events, performances, conferences, concerts, and anything else an event-planner can dream up. The management takes pride in the balanced symbiosis between "man and machine" at the Acropolis; the smooth functioning necessary to host large events combined with the spirit and passion necessary to make them memorable. It is conveniently and centrally located, accessible on foot from most tourist destinations and by public transportation. See website for current programming and rental information. Public gardens with children's carousel |
Place Masséna Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6000 France |
This is the ideal place to take a break and unwind before continuing a tour of the city. It is a haven of tranquility with a large lawn, fountains, pine and palm trees, and inviting blue chairs, perfectly placed to connect Vieux-Nice, the city centre and the seaside Promenade des Anglais. The kids will be delighted to ride in the charming wrought-iron merry-go-round, playing cheery tunes when it is in operation. You cannot miss the towering sculpture en forme d'arc created by artist Bernard Venet. The Albert I garden is among the oldest in the city and was named after the Belgian king in 1914. This museum shows the sheer breadth and diversity of Asian art and culture, with pieces from many different regions. The collection of traditional costumes is outstanding. Just by the Phoenix Park, this museum opened in 1998 and is one of the most beautiful and well-designed in the city. The architect, Kenzo Tangé, has constructed a masterpiece in white marble, resting on round and square bases symbolizing the sky and the earth. The museum stretches out towards a small artificial lake where swans and ducks swim. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This private stretch of beach is ideal for families with young children - it even comes complete with an adventure playground and swimming pool. What's more, the deckchairs are far enough apart to give each sun seeker the privacy they need. All in all, an attractive private beach in the heart of town that should please the whole family! A Gothic building in the city centre |
37 Bis Avenue Jean-Médecin Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6000 France |
Unlike most of the churches in the old town, which have been strongly influenced by the Italian baroque style, the lines of this building appear unashamedly Gothic. In fact it's a reproduction that only dates back to 1868 and was designed by the architect C. Lenormand! It is Nice's largest church and its first modern religious building. The church stands proud and serene in the middle of one of the city's main thoroughfares, Avenue Jean Médecin. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Nice's botanical garden really couldn't be anywhere else but on the aptly named Corniche-Fleurie, meaning 'Flowered Balcony'. Literally a museum out in the great wide open, spread over three hectares, this garden grows an impressive quantity of different Mediterranean floral species. Remarkably well kept throughout, it's somewhat of a surprise that so few Niçois actually come to visit. A car-park is available. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Butterfly paradise |
306 Avenue Mozart Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6600 France +33 4 9333 4949 http://www.marineland.fr/ |
A good 25km from Nice (but just 200m from the biot train station), this park takes you on a voyage through the tropics and on a discovery tour of its wildlife. An entire jungle has been recreated here beneath the dome in which magnificent butterflies of many different and often rare species fly free. This is also home to other animals native to the same tropical climate, such as spiders, crocodiles and bats. This visit can often be combined with a trip to Marineland, the Petite Ferme (little farm), Adventure Golf or Aquasplash, all located on the same premises. With this in mind, day passes valid for 2 or 3 parks or a 2-day/5-park passport available from 1 July until 31 August, may prove worthwhile. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A symbolic figure in the history of Nice |
Place St-Augustin Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côted'Azur 6300 France |
Catherine Ségurane is a symbolic historical figure in the city of Nice, which has named one of its streets (where the antique shops are to be found) after this famous washer-woman or lavandière. Several metres away you'll find a small commemorative plaque in honour of this courageous young lady. In many ways Nice's equivalent of Joan of Arc, Catherine Ségurane is said to have played a major role in saving the city from its Turkish assailants during the siege of August 1543. She symbolises the courage of the women of Nice during these hostilities. Legend has it that this lavandière made the enemy flee by showing them her behind! The memorial built in her honour in 1923, designed by Bagotti, can be found just opposite Saint Augustin church where people come on November 25th each year to pay her tribute. Baroque Masterpiece |
Place Rossetti Nice 6300 France +33 4 93 62 34 40 http://www.nice.fr/mairie_nice... |
This cathedral's calm green façade belies its astonishingly luxurious interior. Marble columns, furnishings decorated by mosaics in colored stone (marquetry), gold mouldings, and massive murals combine to create true baroque splendor. Built by architect Jean-André Guibert - one of baroque art's greatest supporters - between 1650 and 1699 in honor of Saint Réparate (the city's patron saint), the church consists of three naves and a magnificent chancel. The bell tower was added almost a century after the cathedral was completed. Relics abound, as do several interesting paintings, including one by early 19th-century local artist Hercule Trachel. Where Dufy & Matisse are laid to rest |
Place du Monastère de Cimiez Colline de Cimiez Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côted'Azur 6000 France |
The thought of visiting a cemetery is certainly not one that appeals to everybody. However, bathed in light and overlooking the city from the hilltop at Cimiez, this one hardly inspires morbid or lugubrious thoughts. Practically all the graves are very old, the majority being individual miniature white-marble chapels, some of which are adorned with beautiful sculptures. But the true allure of this cemetery lies in two graves in particular: those of painters Raoul Dufy and Henri Matisse, who both ended their days in Nice. Dufy's - a small, discreet grave, and very low - is almost hidden from view and a little difficult to find. To point you in the right direction, head for the gate that links the Monastery garden to the cemetery - it is level with this. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Hidden in the old town |
Place Saint-Augustin Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côted'Azur 6300 France +33 4 9392 6045 / +33 4 9214 4800 |
Although this is a little-known and seldom-visited church, its architecture is very much worth a look. Rebuilt at the end of the 17th Century, the church remains today much the same as it did then; in spite of some changes made during the 19th Century, the baroque arrangement on the church's façade has remained intact. Do take the time to have a look at the Pietà panelling in the chancel and the surrounding décor which is the work of the famous painter Bréa. Also worth seeing is the fine polychrome marble work. Genuine Nice wine! |
Quartier Saint-Roman-de-Bellet Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6200 France +33 4 9337 8157 |
Of course, Nice and its immediate surroundings aren't exactly world-renowned for their wine production. And yet, Nice is the proud owner of a stretch of vineyards where the grapes are harvested and transformed into Appellation Contrôlée wine (wine carrying a guarantee of origin or 'AOC'), called Vin de Bellet (AOC certified since 1941). In the Saint-Romain district of Bellet, which has preserved a certain amount of cultivable land, the Bellet vineyard - among others - produces a nice little local wine with a subtle, attractive aroma. Connoisseurs or amateurs take note - Nice has some excellent wine too! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fairy-tale castle on the hill |
29 Avenue Jean-Lorrain 176, boulevard Carnot Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côted'Azur 6300 France |
On Mont Boron you can't help but notice the large pink castle amidst the throng of stunning villas. It's a rather peculiar sight, like something created out of a fairy tale as a treat for a good little girl. This fascinating structure was built in 1858 for Robert Smith, the English colonel of the Indian army which not only explains where the name 'Château de l'Anglais' (The Englishman's Castle) comes from, but also the astonishing architectural blend of Gothic forms and Hindu palace influences. Nowadays it is divided into private apartments. Review © 2007, Wcities |

It is a fine example of Italian baroque influence in the religious buildings in the region, particularly around Vieux-Nice, with its rounded form, mock marble, golden stuccoes, beautiful paintings and Trompe L'oeil illusions. Construction of the chapel took place between 1740 and 1786. It was handed over to the Brotherhood of Black Penitents - a religious order founded in 1422 clothed only in black, in keeping with the funerary role they fulfilled. Brotherhoods such as these originated in the Middle Ages and are still widespread today in and around Provence. There are beautiful seventeenth-century canvases as well as two altarpieces dedicated to the Virgin in the sacristy: one by Miralhet (1429), the other by Bréa (1485). Free entry. Panoramic peak at 220m |
Route du Fort du Mont Alban Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côted'Azur 6300 France |
The Fort du Mont Alban is a fine example of 16th-century military architecture. Built on the hilltop at 220m above sea level, it offers a striking 360° panorama. To one side you have Nice itself, the bay opening out onto the sea, the airport and the Lower Alps region. To the other side your eyes wander over the pretty little towns and villages such as Villefranche and Cap Ferrat. The landscape is wild and densely covered in typically Mediterranean vegetation, such as scrubland, pine and oak trees. For the trivia-mongers among you, Elton John owns a vast estate just 300m from the fort, but unfortunately neither the actual fort nor the singer's home are open to visitors. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Mont Boron is one of the many hills bordering the city of Nice. Stretching out above the port, it is a favorite walking spot for families and nature enthusiasts. Dating back to 1860, this forest features vegetation native to the Mediterranean, such as the Aleppo pine and the Holm oak. When you reach the heights, stop a while to take in the beautiful panorama over Nice and the surrounding bay. With 11km of signposted footpaths, it is the perfect place enjoying the fresh air while hiking or mountain biking. Don't miss the nearby fort on Mont Alban - a magnificent example of 16th-century military architecture. Review © 2007, Wcities |

One of France's most imposing memorials |
Place Guynemer Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côted'Azur 6300 France |
Facing the sea, this magnificent monument to the dead inspires contemplation. A magnificent monument, it is one of the most imposing memorials in France. Built entirely from white stone, light transfigures this highly stylised building whose features include a huge open space, enormous urn and bas-reliefs punctuating the monument throughout. Should you get a bit closer, it is possible to read some 3655 names displayed in remembrance. The registration numbers of all these fallen soldiers have been placed in a reliquary inside the urn. A place to remember! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Stunning collection of 1950s art to present day |
Avenue de Saint Sébastien Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6300 France +33 4 9362 6162 http://www.mamac-nice.org/ |
This museum is not only a bastion for modern art, but an architectural triumph. The Carrara marble towers are linked with glass footbridges; at the top, a terrace/walkway (known as the Jardin d'Eden) gives visitors a bird's-eye view of the city. Works from the 1950s to the present day are featured in the permanent collection, including some fine Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein Pop Art pieces. Temporary exhibitions and the Ecole du Louvre lecture series are held here (November to April), as well as monthly film screenings. There is an excellent museum shop on the ground floor which offers design pieces and books. Admission: EUR4; reduced EUR2.50; free 1st & 3rd Sundays. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Quite a way from the centre of Nice, hidden in a quiet street, the Prieuré du Vieux Logis will not deny you its treasures (provided you make it during the short opening hours). It's well worth the effort in spite of the obstacles, as this former villa houses a magnificent collection of religious art from the Middle Ages. An entire medieval universe re-emerges through an inventory of everyday objects and furniture from the 14th to the 16th century. Take time to linger and admire the 15th-century Flemish Pietà. Only the determined get to visit this museum! You have to climb a significant number of steps before the stunning panorama over the Baie des Anges comes into view and only then do you reach the museum. Looked at objectively, this naval museum is really rather small, but worth visiting for those who find the world of sailing and ships appealing. You can admire the array of arms and weaponry, engravings and paintings and the fascinating navigational instruments. The extremely minute detail of the model boats is remarkable. Seaside activities |
Promenade des Anglais Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6000 France |
This is arguably one of the finest private beaches to be found along the large seaside walkway that follows the shoreline, known as the Promenade des Anglais, or la Prom to locals. You can find it level with the famous Belle Epoque palace-come-hotel Négresco. Take advantage of the superb range of activities on offer, including pedalo boats, jet-skis, parasending, sea-water swimming pool, adventure playground for the kids, swimming lessons, table tennis, a pontoon... all under the watchful eye of a qualified swimming instructor/lifeguard. You'll certainly be grateful for the sun loungers as the beaches in Nice are pebbled rather than sandy. You can also enjoy great cuisine on the beach itself with an excellent menu to choose from, served on a delightful shaded terrace. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The Notre-Dame du Port church is an impressive sight standing just in front of the harbour, and surrounded by beautiful buildings very typical of Nice-style architecture, dressed predominantly in red and adorned with shutters and tiles. Somewhere to relax a while |
Port de Nice Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6300 France |
If you're someone who likes quiet surroundings and moments spent in peaceful contemplation, then come for a stroll on the sea wall that leads to Nice's lighthouse. The stones take on a dazzling white appearance under the sun's rays and the light playing on the waves makes the sea glisten and sparkle with a brilliance that makes it a dancing blur before your eyes. Listen to the lapping of the water against the Pains de Savon (literally: 'blocks of soap'), the enormous stones put in place to protect the sea wall. Here, silent fishermen - sometimes snoozing - wait for the fish to bite, while other people sunbathe - except when the sea is rough when you may get showered in sea spray! This refreshingly simple walk right in the heart of the city will do your senses the power of good! Review © 2007, Wcities |

The Château Grimaldi buildings are a magnificent sight, with their high, rugged dry-stone walls facing the sea. This fortress shelters some truly captivating works of art; contained within these walls is a great collection of works by Picasso that will make your eyes light up in wonder and delight. You won't find any of Picasso's blue period or Cubist pieces here, rather works radiating an intense and clear light, fruits of the years the artist spent on the Côte d'Azur. The museum also has some very fine paintings by artists who are connected with the region. One not to be missed is Nicolas de Staël's piece, 'Le Piano Rouge'. The museum is currently closed for restoration and will reopen in the beginning of 2008. You can enjoy the entire collection at Palazzo Grassi in Venice, Italy. Review © 2007, Wcities |

On the edge of the old town, this pretty square was created at the end of the 18th century under the supervision of Antoine Spinelli, who also designed one of the square's most beautiful buildings, the Chapelle du Saint-Sépulcre. Several narrow, winding little streets open out into this square, which appears like an oasis of light from the labyrinth of shady streets and old, leaning buildings. The city's baroque Cathédrale Sainte Réparate has a place of pride here. Place Saint-François Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6300 France |
Place Saint-François is just 50-metres from Place Garibaldi. Although smaller in size and less imposing, this square has just as much to offer architecturally. Take time to admire the beautiful eighteenth-century bell tower, a remnant of the Franciscan monks' presence in Nice - needless to say they named this square after their patron saint, François. Standing opposite is the fine building known as the Palais Communal, built in the 16th century and renovated during the 17th and 18th centuries. In the centre of the square, a pretty fountain has flowed since 1938, courtesy of François Aragon. Called 'The Dolphin Fountain', it reminds us that a fish market is also held in the square. Baroque style |

In sharp contrast to the solemn exterior, the interior of this church is full of cabled columns, polychromatic marbles, gilding and mouldings. Pure baroque! If you didn't arrive in Nice by train and you like architecture, then the city's main railway station, known as the Gare Central, is worth paying a visit to. Found at the juncture of Avenue Jean Médecin and Avenue Thiers, it is an imposing building, falling perfectly within the codes of beauty as far as 19th-century stations are concerned, with brickwork, mouldings and vast open spaces. Designed by architect Bouchot, it was built under his supervision in 1865. A really beautiful building that's definitely worth a look. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Pocket-sized paradise |
Avenue Jean Lorrain Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côted'Azur 6300 France |
Just a few metres from the sea at the foot of Mont Boron and near the Cap de Nice, you'll find a tiny patch of greenery - the Théodore de Banville garden. This is a very beautiful part of the city, a less built up area with a slightly village feel to it. The garden fits perfectly into these surroundings. A couple of rather large trees provide some welcome shade during the summer months and from one of the benches in the garden, visitors can gaze out over the sea. A beautiful sculpture adds even more charm to this neat little park, which is an ideal place for a picnic of delicious 'pan-bagnats' - the region's own special spin on the traditional sandwich. There are many positive things about this tourist information office. The opening hours are particularly helpful (especially for early birds!) and it's also worth noting that the office is open on Sundays. Its central location means that it is easily accessible. You'll find it right in the city centre, at the top end of Avenue Jean Médecin (the main shopping thoroughfare). The offices in fact, take up part of the right wing of the railway station building. You'll find a large number of brochures and leaflets at your disposal, and there are four members of staff ready to help you find what you're looking for. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Gigantic outdoor sculpture |
Jardin Albert Ier Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6000 France |
Come and experience modern art outdoors! Close to the famous Place Masséna and set in the beautiful surroundings of the Albert I Garden, towers Bernard Venet's huge arc. It stands over several tens of meters high and seems almost to touch the sky. Despite its gigantic proportions, the structure has an amazing feeling of lightness about it. This contemporary work of art has had no trouble winning the hearts of the people of Nice and has become a modern symbol of the neighborhood. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Reconstruction of an Ancient Greek residence |

Villa Grecque Kérylos juts out over the sea and is surrounded by high, rugged cliffs, just a couple of kilometres from Nice. Enjoy an authentic recreation of life as it would have been in Ancient Greece. Although built at the beginning of the 20th century, this building takes you back several thousands of years. The guided tour of the villa is most informative and offers a better understanding of the subtleties of this ancestral architecture. As for the furniture, the richness of some of the materials used is astonishing. Review © 2007, Wcities |
