Public gardens with children's carousel |
Place Masséna Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6000 France |
This is the ideal place to take a break and unwind before continuing a tour of the city. It is a haven of tranquility with a large lawn, fountains, pine and palm trees, and inviting blue chairs, perfectly placed to connect Vieux-Nice, the city centre and the seaside Promenade des Anglais. The kids will be delighted to ride in the charming wrought-iron merry-go-round, playing cheery tunes when it is in operation. You cannot miss the towering sculpture en forme d'arc created by artist Bernard Venet. The Albert I garden is among the oldest in the city and was named after the Belgian king in 1914. A Gothic building in the city centre |
37 Bis Avenue Jean-Médecin Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6000 France |
Unlike most of the churches in the old town, which have been strongly influenced by the Italian baroque style, the lines of this building appear unashamedly Gothic. In fact it's a reproduction that only dates back to 1868 and was designed by the architect C. Lenormand! It is Nice's largest church and its first modern religious building. The church stands proud and serene in the middle of one of the city's main thoroughfares, Avenue Jean Médecin. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Vestiges of ancient Nice |
160 Avenue des Arènes de Cimiez Entrée avenue Montecroce Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6000 France +33 4 9381 5957 http://www.nice.fr/mairie_nice... |
Situated on one of the city's most prominent hills, far from the hustle and bustle of the town center, Nice's archaeological museum is renowned for its remarkably well-preserved Roman baths dating back to the 2nd & 3rd centuries C.E. Objects on display, such as vases and jewelery, have either been found during excavations or brought in from other sites. A small boutique offers a range of books on the 'Cemenelum' (Cimiez) site and Nice in general, as well as reproductions of some museum pieces. Free for everyone the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month. Matisse: The Man & His Work |
164 Avenue des Arènes de Cimiez Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6000 France +33 4 9381 0808 / +33 4 9353 4053 http://www.musee-matisse-nice.... |
Housed in a magnificent red building, this museum stands on Cimiez hill, close to the city's Arènes (ancient amphitheatre) and the Musée archéologique. Matisse lived in Cimiez from 1917 until his death in 1954. Paintings, drawings and some of his earliest works are on display, along with pieces that reveal his lesser-known talents as a sculptor. Several black and white photographs offer glimpses of the artist's private life. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Panoramic peak at 220m |
Route du Fort du Mont Alban Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côted'Azur 6300 France |
The Fort du Mont Alban is a fine example of 16th-century military architecture. Built on the hilltop at 220m above sea level, it offers a striking 360° panorama. To one side you have Nice itself, the bay opening out onto the sea, the airport and the Lower Alps region. To the other side your eyes wander over the pretty little towns and villages such as Villefranche and Cap Ferrat. The landscape is wild and densely covered in typically Mediterranean vegetation, such as scrubland, pine and oak trees. For the trivia-mongers among you, Elton John owns a vast estate just 300m from the fort, but unfortunately neither the actual fort nor the singer's home are open to visitors. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Stunning collection of 1950s art to present day |
Avenue de Saint Sébastien Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6300 France +33 4 9362 6162 http://www.mamac-nice.org/ |
This museum is not only a bastion for modern art, but an architectural triumph. The Carrara marble towers are linked with glass footbridges; at the top, a terrace/walkway (known as the Jardin d'Eden) gives visitors a bird's-eye view of the city. Works from the 1950s to the present day are featured in the permanent collection, including some fine Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein Pop Art pieces. Temporary exhibitions and the Ecole du Louvre lecture series are held here (November to April), as well as monthly film screenings. There is an excellent museum shop on the ground floor which offers design pieces and books. Admission: EUR4; reduced EUR2.50; free 1st & 3rd Sundays. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Maritime marvel |
Place du 8 Mai 1945 Parc du Château Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6300 France +33 4 9380 4761 |
Only the determined get to visit this museum! You have to climb a significant number of steps before the stunning panorama over the Baie des Anges comes into view and only then do you reach the museum. Looked at objectively, this naval museum is really rather small, but worth visiting for those who find the world of sailing and ships appealing. You can admire the array of arms and weaponry, engravings and paintings and the fascinating navigational instruments. The extremely minute detail of the model boats is remarkable. Magnificent Italian opera house by the sea |
39178 Rue Saint-François de Paule Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6300 France +33 4 9217 4000 http://www.opera-nice.org |
Going at least once to a performance at the Opera de Nice is a must, even if it's just to admire the fairy-like theatre and its enormous chandelier. Each year the Opera de Nice puts on no less than 7 operas and 15 concerts! The productions are always of very high calibre. Good seats need to be reserved in advance for the operas. Concert tickets are obtained more easily. The Corvesy parking garage, rue Alexandre Mari, offers a special price upon presentation of your ticket. Check their website for the upcoming events and performances. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Somewhere to relax a while |
Port de Nice Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6300 France |
If you're someone who likes quiet surroundings and moments spent in peaceful contemplation, then come for a stroll on the sea wall that leads to Nice's lighthouse. The stones take on a dazzling white appearance under the sun's rays and the light playing on the waves makes the sea glisten and sparkle with a brilliance that makes it a dancing blur before your eyes. Listen to the lapping of the water against the Pains de Savon (literally: 'blocks of soap'), the enormous stones put in place to protect the sea wall. Here, silent fishermen - sometimes snoozing - wait for the fish to bite, while other people sunbathe - except when the sea is rough when you may get showered in sea spray! This refreshingly simple walk right in the heart of the city will do your senses the power of good! Review © 2007, Wcities |

The focal point of the city |
Place Masséna Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6000 France |
Place Masséna is without a doubt Nice's most famous square, and the most majestic. Surrounded by contrasting greenery of the Albert I and Masséna gardens, the imposing red-colored buildings command the eye and demand admiration. During Carnaval, the King's float takes pride of place in this very spot. Place Masséna is also one of the city's key central points: Vieux-Nice is within easy reach, as well as the sea and the main shopping thoroughfares. You're bound to pass through it at some point! A gem of Vieux-Nice |
Place Rosetti (Rue Rosetti et Rue Centrale) Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6300 France +33 (0)4 9392 8282 (Tourist Information) |
Several narrow, winding little streets open out into this square, which appears like an oasis of light from the labyrinth of shady streets and old, leaning buildings. The city's baroque Cathédrale Sainte Réparate has a place of pride here. Adding to the square's authentic character is the gray stonework, complemented by a small, charming fountain made of white stone. It's also here that you can taste the city's best ice cream at Glacier Fenocchio. A rather steep climb up Rue Rossetti will take you directly to the Parc du Château. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Restored to its former glory |
1 Place du Palais-du-Justice (Rue de la Prefecture) Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6300 France |
This square recently received a lengthly (and long overdue) restoration process. Today, you see it at its best, with attractive stone paving in warm colors and a pretty fountain that catches the beautiful bright Mediterranean sunlight. From the top of an impressive staircase, the recently renovated law courts are a highlight of the area's architectural beauty. On the right, there's a small bell tower with a series of archways running behind. Pleasant café terraces dotted throughout the square are the perfect place to soak up the Mediterranean atmosphere. At the Port |
Quai Amiral-Infernet Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côted'Azur 6300 France |
Located in the heart of the city, the Port of Nice is situated just 4 miles from the Nice Côte d'Azur International Airport and a few minutes on foot from the city's main tourist attractions. It is the only French port with an NGV (High Speed Ferry) service to Corsica. The island can be reached within 2.5-3 hours, making day trips to Corsica possible; the crossing on traditional ferries otherwise takes between 6 and 8 hours. Two companies provide services to and from the island; these are Corsica Ferries and SNCM Ferryterranée. Services offered by the two ferry terminals include a tourist office, car park, WC, showers, baby changing facilities, games room and drinks & sweets machines. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Nice's much-loved promenade |
Promenades des Anglais Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6000 France |
A big favorite with locals and visitors alike, attracting roller-bladers, cyclists and dog owners, this much-loved promenade hugs the seashore for several kilometers. The promenade's characteristic blue chairs, scattered along the way, provide the perfect vantage point from which to take in the expanse of azure blue stretching as far as the eye can see. It took its current form in 1822, when Lewis Way, an Englishman who lived in Nice during the winter months, financed the two-meter wide path. It is free of charge to stroll, bask in the sun, and enjoy the pleasures of Nice's beaches. Review © 2007, Wcities |
