Nice is a major tourist destination all year round, and has a remarkably comprehensive selection of hotels, catering to all tastes and budgets.

Négresco & Along the Promenade des Anglais

Fans of the belle époque should head straight for Nice's most famous hotel, the centenarian Négresco, which occupies pride of place on the city's magnificent seaside walkway, the Promenade des Anglais. It is among the most expensive hotels in the city, but not without good reason. Every room offers a panoramic sea view and its beautiful architectural style is a constant source of inspiration for photographers; the white façade, crowned with pink domes that stare tirelessly out to sea, is featured on many a postcard. This gem of a hotel also harbours many more treasures inside with rare antique furnishings and exquisite works of art.

Many other hotels line the Promenade including the Westminster, the West-End and the Beau Rivage. For those with more modern tastes, the stylish comfort, central location and sea view of the Méridien makes it an ideal choice, with the added bonus of the Ruhl Casino on the ground floor. The Radisson hotel is another luxury option near the airport.

Near Villefranche

Still in the same vein, but further away from the commotion of the city, is the four-star Palais Maeterlinck, situated near the pretty village of Villefranche. Overlooking the sea, and with a delightful swimming pool, it is a wonderfully atmospheric place. The hotel restaurant, Le Mélisande will introduce you to some of the very best in French gastronomy. The Elysée Palace on the other hand is destined to captivate the hearts of art lovers. The building comprises two blocks, between which a feminine statue seems to glide – a construction of monumental proportions (26m tall) that is the work of sculptor Sacha Sosso, one of the exponents of the artistic trend known as the Nice School of Art.

Finally, two slightly less luxurious hotels but just as charming in their simplicity, are the Grand Hotel Aston, overlooking the gardens of Place Masséna, and La Pérouse, facing the sea just by the Cours Saleya, a lively pedestrian area full of markets and café terraces.

Port Area

Hotel Apogia, a three star option, is close to the peaceful port area. Part of the big hotel chains are the very centrally located Holiday Inn on Rue Victor Hugo, and the four Mercure hotels: Mercure Promenade des Anglais, Mercure Centre Notre-Dame, Mercure Nice Californie – a little way out of the centre – and Mercure Nice Marché aux Fleurs. The décor is fairly standard in each of these hotels, but you can't fault them for great comfort and service.

Practical Options

For travellers with more practical requirements, especially those on business trips, there is the Kyriad St-Isidore and the Novotel Nice Centre. The Kyriad Saint Isidore is situated near the airport and motorways, and the prices are extremely reasonable. The rates are a little higher at the Novotel Nice Centre, which is located between the Palais des Expositions and the Acropolis conference centre, and is easily accessible to the motorway and airport.

The area around the station also has a large number of hotels. The large hotel, Ibis, with its 199 rooms represents good value for money. This area is also home to some of the more inexpensive accommodation in the city.

Cheap & Cheerful

Still in the lower price bracket but more centrally located, the following two and three star hotels are well maintained and are good values. The beautiful ochre-coloured building of the Paradis Hotel can be found in the pedestrianized precinct. The comfy rooms are very welcoming and some even come with a balcony. Small in size, the Hotel Normandie is both a friendly and comfortable place to stay.

Nice's much-loved promenade
Promenades des Anglais

A big favorite with locals and visitors alike, attracting roller-bladers, cyclists and dog owners, this much-loved promenade hugs the seashore for several kilometers. The promenade's characteristic blue chairs, scattered along the way, provide the perfect vantage point from which to take in the expanse of azure blue stretching as far as the eye can see. It took its current form in 1822, when Lewis Way, an Englishman who lived in Nice during the winter months, financed the two-meter wide path. It is free of charge to stroll, bask in the sun, and enjoy the pleasures of Nice's beaches.
