Overlooking Nice |
176 Avenue de Rimiez Aire Saint Michel, Gairaut Nice 6100 France +33 4 93 84 49 66 |
Au Rendez-vous des Amis is an especially pleasant place to dine, as the name suggests, in the company of friends or family. At this restaurant, located but a few kilometers from the city, the vibe is authentically French and rustic. The setting is simple and welcoming, and in the summer months you can eat outside in a charming garden, where you'll enjoy deliciously prepared regional specialties. Like its neighbor, Chez Simon, Au Rendez-vous des Amis serves tasty, filling French fare. All the necessary ingredients are here for you to enjoy a great meal! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Café with live shows |
5 Rue St-Vincent Vieux Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6300 France +33 4 9380 2733 http://www.bardesoiseaux.info/ |
Tucked away in a corner of the old town, this original café is about as easy to find as a needle in a haystack. Once you find it, Bar des Oiseaux offers a refreshing blend of live theater, concerts and philosophical discussions. It has built up a considerable following among locals, and weekends are particularly lively. Owing its fame to talented Nice actress Noëlle Perna (who performs here when other commitments allow), it's a good place to get a taste of the very special Niçois sense of humor and way of life. Authentic local cuisine |
39 Rue Beaumont Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côted'Azur 6300 France +33 4 9389 1794 |
This restaurant is ideal for those who love traditional rustic cuisine. The décor is as welcoming as the food, with all kinds of instruments on display: a gramophone, scales, and an old piano, giving the whole restaurant a nostalgic and homey feel. The famous Helène Barale has a menu full of typical local dishes, such as Chard Pie, Pissaladière and Gnocchi. Chez Barale, the golden rules are quality, freshness and authenticity. Cheese galore in a cellar |
29 Rue Benoît-Bunico Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6300 France +33 4 9313 0783 |
Indulge your passion for what France does best: cheese and wine. Hidden from view, down a steep flight of stairs, the dining area is tucked away in a beautifully refurbished former stone cellar with vaulted ceilings. Around fifty cheeses are kept in peak condition before being used in the seasonal dishes featured on the menu. Indulge in one of the delicious offerings of melted cheese with potato, onion and other ingredients, complemented by a bottle of wine selected from the display upstairs. Capacity: fifty diners. Lebanese cuisine |
9 Rue de la Préfecture Vieux Nice Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6300 France +33 4 9392 9232 |
Step inside and you will find a warm Lebanese welcome in Byblos, named for a charming Lebanese fishing village. The cuisine is varied and plentiful. If you cannot decide on what to have, take the easy way out and try the mezze, an assortment of traditional dishes: taboulé libanais (a couscous dish with parsley), kefta (meatballs flavoured with spices), houmos (chickpea purée). The décor in the two dining rooms is typically Lebanese with trompe l'oeil frescoes in shades of brown, orange and beige and a bar made of dark wood. Review © 2007, Wcities |

37 Promenade des Anglais (Hôtel Négresco) Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6000 France +33 4 9316 6400 http://www.hotel-negresco-nice... |
This restaurant, which is part of the world famous Hôtel Négresco, is the only one in Nice to have been awarded two stars in the Guide Michelin. Complemented by the luxurious surroundings of the restaurant's belle époque dining room, the chef's exquisite selection of French cuisine and local fare should satisfy the most refined palates. Service is of equally high standard, and seasonal dishes are always on the menu. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Local specialities in a rustic setting |
1 Rue Pairolière Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côted'Azur 6300 France +33 4 9392 0573 |
A Nice institution, this place has been treating its clientèle since the 1970s with great local cuisine that includes pan-Bagnat (a kind of sandwich), stuffed sardines, courgette and aubergine fritters, small fried fish, Swiss chard pie and Socca (a kind of soft crêpe made from chickpea flour). Chez René is self-service: diners order and help themselves at the bar, then sit down to eat at one of the large wooden tables outside. There's also a dining room inside. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Chez Simon, located just outside the city, serves tasty regional specialties complemented by a simple, welcoming ambiance. The atmosphere is warm, and feels like a friend's home. While not much fuss has been taken over the décor, the food more than makes up for it. Take your time over a good meal, a glass of French wine, and relax. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Ideal location on pedestrian market |
1 Cours Saleya Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6300 France +33 4 9380 8059 |
La Civette du Cours has one of the most famous terraces in the lively pedestrian precinct of Cours Saleya. The restaurant is a popular location to enjoy a drink with friends and watch the bustling passersby, for locals as much as tourists in need of a rest. If you want a bite to eat then snacks with meat, fish, or brochettes (kebabs) are available for a reasonable price, particularly considering the prime location of your table! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fish dishes a speciality |
2 Avenue Jean-Lorrain Cap de Nice Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côted'Azur 6300 France +33 4 9389 3926 |
This restaurant overlooking the sea and Nice's lighthouse has been in business since 1936. The specialty here is, unsurprisingly, fish--most of which are caught that very morning. Large bay windows make the interior wonderfully airy and bright, and the traditional local recipes are sublime. The wine list contains a range of good Provençal options. The restaurant is just beyond the harbor, located in a calm spot far from the bustle of the city center. Valet parking service available. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A small Dutch pub |
6 Rue Mascoïnat Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6300 France +33 4 9392 4285 |
Amongst the many pubs surrounding Vieux-Nice, this one is unique in being Dutch rather than British. Photos of Amsterdam, a mannequin in fishnet stockings, and other mementos give this friendly establishment its Dutch flavor. Beer fans take note: the pub serves an international array of brews (Dutch, Danish, Irish, Scottish, English, Belgian or French) totaling 100 beer choices. Happy Hour, when everything is available at half price, runs from 5:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. Their motto is: The best place in town if you like beer... and the local regulars agree. One of Nice's best |
5 Rue des Ponchettes Nice 6300 France +33 4 93 85 67 95 |
The chefs at Don Camillo serve gourmet cuisine prepared using the freshest of produce bought from that morning's market in nearby Cours Saleya. The restaurant is simply yet tastefully decorated and the food delicious. Waiting staff are particularly attentive, and even the most sophisticated palates will find this a delightful dining experience. The market-fresh menu is available for around EUR29 and the lunch menu (main course, dessert, coffee and glass of wine) for around EUR18. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Ice cream heaven |
2 Place Rossetti Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6300 France +33 (0)4 9380 7252 http://www.fenocchio.fr/ |
It doesn't take long to figure out why this long-established ice cream shop facing Cathédrale Sainte Réparate is so popular. Its choice location certainly helps, but what really draws a crowd is the huge range of home-made ice creams: 70 different flavors are available in total. Old favorites like Café Liégeois and Peach Melba feature alongside more unusual flavors like Comté de Nice (mandarin ice cream with whipped cream, pine nuts and candied mandarins) and Négus (six different chocolate flavors). Situated in attractive Place Garibaldi, this is one of the city's most authentic café-bars that has been around since the 1950s. Highlights include a superb terrace with delightful archways. The restaurant serves wonderful seafood all day (even at breakfast), and shellfish are always fresh. Reservations are not accepted, and the café is often full by 7p, so be sure to arrive early. L'Horloge is one of Nice's trendiest eateries. Situated in the city center, close to Place Masséna, the restaurant is attached to the famous Grand Hotel Aston Nice. Traditional French cuisine is prepared here with great finesse. For something to write home about, try the frogs' legs accompanied by a ratatouille (a regional specialty). Review © 2007, Wcities |

This hotel's splendid early 20th-century architecture and enviable seafront location overlooking the Promenade des Anglais have made it a legend on French Riviera. Bedrooms are the last word in luxury and magnificent works of art and antique furniture abound. Gourmets can choose to dine in the hotel's Le Chantecler restaurant or top-class brasserie La Rotonde, which boasts an unusual carousel-style décor complete with wooden horses. Among the many distinguished past guests of the hotel are Claudia Schiffer, Orson Welles and Michael Jackson. Breakfast is offered for around EUR22. 30 Boulevard Maurice Maeterlinck Basse Corniche Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côted'Azur 6300 France +33 (0)4 9200 7200 http://www.palais-maeterlinck.... |
This hotel stands on top of a small cliff between Nice and Villefranche-sur-Mer, overlooking the Mediterranean horizon. A private funicular shuttles guests to the hotel's exclusive private beach. Within the three hectares of grounds lies a magnificent swimming pool surrounded by colonnades and tall cypress trees. Former private home to the Belgian writer (and Nobel prize winner) Maurice Maeterlinck, both the architecture and décor are the height of elegance. The hotel's fine restaurant, Le Mélisande, serves Mediterranean cuisine with a focus on local products cultivated on small farms. While the location is a bit remote, this hotel is a peaceful paradise between sea and sky! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Famous and busy |
6 Place Charles Félix Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6300 France +33 4 9385 7410 |
It's easy to see why this café-brasserie, situated in the heart of bustling Cours Saleya, has long been a favorite with both locals and tourists. Brasserie L'F attracts a young, chic clientèle, coming to see and be seen from the huge terraces lining the street. It's the perfect place to watch the world go by. In winter, heaters ensure that the terraces outside stay busy (and warm). Be sure to try the fabulous bruschetta with an espresso (EUR2) or a beer (EUR3). Review © 2007, Wcities |

This Scottish pub features cozy wood paneling and a remarkable centerpiece of a painting consisting of four Scots clad in mini-kilts. It is located in a bustling pedestrian zone in Vieux-Nice, just next to the Place du Palais-de-Justice and the Cours Saleya. In addition to the huge choice of beer (30 brews) and whiskeys, Master Home also has a cyber-café. There are popular theme nights every week, including disco, Scandinavia, cowboys and more. The clientèle is young and trendy, with a healthy representation of ex-pats hailing from the British Isles. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Hillside forest - superb for scenery & strolling |
Boulevard du Mont-Boron Route forestière et chemin des Hespèrides Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côted'Azur 6300 France +33 (0)4 9392 8282 (Tourist Information) |
Mont Boron is one of the many hills bordering the city of Nice. Stretching out above the port, it is a favorite walking spot for families and nature enthusiasts. Dating back to 1860, this forest features vegetation native to the Mediterranean, such as the Aleppo pine and the Holm oak. When you reach the heights, stop a while to take in the beautiful panorama over Nice and the surrounding bay. With 11km of signposted footpaths, it is the perfect place enjoying the fresh air while hiking or mountain biking. Don't miss the nearby fort on Mont Alban - a magnificent example of 16th-century military architecture. Review © 2007, Wcities |

If you fancy trying some regional specialties, order the specialty at Chez Pipo called socca (a kind of soft crêpe made from chickpea flour). It has been called the best socca in Nice; never too greasy, and fresh from the oven. Wine is available by the glass and there is a good home-made Tiramisu that is worth saving room for. Unfortunately, the restaurant does not take reservations so it is a good idea to get here early and beat the crowds, or be prepared to wait! Review © 2007, Wcities |

A gem of Vieux-Nice |
Place Rosetti (Rue Rosetti et Rue Centrale) Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6300 France +33 (0)4 9392 8282 (Tourist Information) |
Several narrow, winding little streets open out into this square, which appears like an oasis of light from the labyrinth of shady streets and old, leaning buildings. The city's baroque Cathédrale Sainte Réparate has a place of pride here. Adding to the square's authentic character is the gray stonework, complemented by a small, charming fountain made of white stone. It's also here that you can taste the city's best ice cream at Glacier Fenocchio. A rather steep climb up Rue Rossetti will take you directly to the Parc du Château. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Favourite eatery |
43 Rue Masséna Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6000 France +33 4 9387 8421 |
This restaurant, located in one of the city's busiest shopping districts, promises great pizza no matter what time of day. Service is non-stop and there are dining areas both inside and outside on the huge terrace. However, if you are looking for somewhere intimate, forget it! Dining here may be a bit of a squeeze, but it hasn't stopped the likes of actor Johnny Depp and opera singer Ruggero Raimondi from dropping in. In addition to pizzas, the restaurant serves regional and Italian dishes (not quite what you would expect, given the Canadian name), including ravioli, fresh pasta carbonara and fried squid. Original, tasty cuisine |
4 Quai Papacino (Rue de Foresta) Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côted'Azur 6300 France +33 4 9356 2527 |
This is a fairly original Italian restaurant: not a plate of pizza or spaghetti in sight! The chefs at La Zucca Magica consistently prepare a tasty, changing vegetarian menu using ingredients fresh from that morning's market. When in season, pumpkin (Zucca) is a popular ingredient, as well as a major motif in the decoration; it's Halloween all year long! The restaurant has a modest dining room with tiny tables, with cheerful waiters offering a single daily set menu. Lunch priced EUR17, dinner EUR27. Review © 2007, Wcities |
