Albert Ier Garden

Public gardens with children's carousel
Place Masséna
Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6000
France
This is the ideal place to take a break and unwind before continuing a tour of the city. It is a haven of tranquility with a large lawn, fountains, pine and palm trees, and inviting blue chairs, perfectly placed to connect Vieux-Nice, the city centre and the seaside Promenade des Anglais. The kids will be delighted to ride in the charming wrought-iron merry-go-round, playing cheery tunes when it is in operation. You cannot miss the towering sculpture en forme d'arc created by artist Bernard Venet. The Albert I garden is among the oldest in the city and was named after the Belgian king in 1914.

Basilica of Notre Dame

A Gothic building in the city centre
37 Bis Avenue Jean-Médecin
Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6000
France
Unlike most of the churches in the old town, which have been strongly influenced by the Italian baroque style, the lines of this building appear unashamedly Gothic. In fact it's a reproduction that only dates back to 1868 and was designed by the architect C. Lenormand! It is Nice's largest church and its first modern religious building. The church stands proud and serene in the middle of one of the city's main thoroughfares, Avenue Jean Médecin.

Catherine Ségurane Monument

A symbolic figure in the history of Nice
Place St-Augustin
Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côted'Azur 6300
France
Catherine Ségurane is a symbolic historical figure in the city of Nice, which has named one of its streets (where the antique shops are to be found) after this famous washer-woman or lavandière. Several metres away you'll find a small commemorative plaque in honour of this courageous young lady. In many ways Nice's equivalent of Joan of Arc, Catherine Ségurane is said to have played a major role in saving the city from its Turkish assailants during the siege of August 1543. She symbolises the courage of the women of Nice during these hostilities. Legend has it that this lavandière made the enemy flee by showing them her behind! The memorial built in her honour in 1923, designed by Bagotti, can be found just opposite Saint Augustin church where people come on November 25th each year to pay her tribute.

Cathédrale Sainte Réparate

Baroque Masterpiece
Place Rossetti
Nice 6300
France
+33 4 93 62 34 40
http://www.nice.fr/mairie_nice...
This cathedral's calm green façade belies its astonishingly luxurious interior. Marble columns, furnishings decorated by mosaics in colored stone (marquetry), gold mouldings, and massive murals combine to create true baroque splendor. Built by architect Jean-André Guibert - one of baroque art's greatest supporters - between 1650 and 1699 in honor of Saint Réparate (the city's patron saint), the church consists of three naves and a magnificent chancel. The bell tower was added almost a century after the cathedral was completed. Relics abound, as do several interesting paintings, including one by early 19th-century local artist Hercule Trachel.

Church of St. Martin and St. Augustine

Place Saint-Augustin
Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côted'Azur 6300
France
+33 4 9392 6045 / +33 4 9214 4800
Although this is a little-known and seldom-visited church, its architecture is very much worth a look. Rebuilt at the end of the 17th Century, the church remains today much the same as it did then; in spite of some changes made during the 19th Century, the baroque arrangement on the church's façade has remained intact. Do take the time to have a look at the Pietà panelling in the chancel and the surrounding décor which is the work of the famous painter Bréa. Also worth seeing is the fine polychrome marble work.

Standing proudly in the Albert I gardens in the heartof the city, and directly opposite the sea, is the memorial that commemorates the annexation of Nice to France (also known as the Monument du Centenaire). Incredible though it may seem, it's now roughly two centuries since Nice became French! This memorial, testimony of the inhabitants of Nice decision to join France, was unveiled in 1896. The sculpture - recently restored - that stands at the top of the garden completes the surrounding harmony. Admission is free.

Martyred in Palestine in 250AD at the tender age of 15, local legend has it that she was washed ashore one autumn evening in a small boat guided by a dove. Situated on the roof terraces of Nice's modern art museum, musée d'Art Moderne et d'Art Contemporain (MAMAC), this little garden and wall walk is a curious sight. Nevertheless, the garden boasts a truly wonderful view over Nice - the modern city as well as the old town with its red-tiled rooftops, and the range of hills that encircle the city. A few artistic works are scattered along the length of this Garden of Eden, and sound recordings create the impression of being in the heart of the forest, treating your ears to birdsong and rustling leaves. Access to the garden can only be gained through the museum.

This Genoese-style palace was built in the middle of the 17th century for the Lascaris de Vintimille (a small Italian town near Nice); it was their family home until 1802. Tucked away in a narrow street, the richly coloured and decorated façade of this palace is flanked by old red and ochre buildings typical of Nice's old quarter. The interior is in sumptuous baroque style, its vaulted ceilings decorated with frescoes above huge sweeping staircases. There are also 12th century furnishings, Flemish tapestries, and on the ground floor a recreation of an 18th century pharmacy (and the gift shop). Admission is free.

Masséna Pedestrian Zone

An oasis of calm amidst the traffic
Rue Masséna
Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6000
France
Always a great favorite in large cities, pedestrian precincts are places where human hustle and bustle takes over from the noise of the wheeled traffic. In Nice, the Masséna Zone is the perfect place for a coffee break, trying one of the many fine restaurants or going on a shopping spree. There are clothing options for everyone, for all tastes and budgets. Street artists can often be seen performing here--jugglers, musicians, mime artists--and the warm atmosphere extends throughout the day and into the evening, when everyone takes advantage of the summer months to dine al fresco.

Misericordia Chapel

Baroque chapel on market street
Cours Saleya
Vieux-Nice
Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6300
France
This delightful chapel stands amid Cours Saleya, a bustling pedestrianized street with a fantastic Provençal market. It is a fine example of Italian baroque influence in the religious buildings in the region, particularly around Vieux-Nice, with its rounded form, mock marble, golden stuccoes, beautiful paintings and Trompe L'oeil illusions. Construction of the chapel took place between 1740 and 1786. It was handed over to the Brotherhood of Black Penitents - a religious order founded in 1422 clothed only in black, in keeping with the funerary role they fulfilled. Brotherhoods such as these originated in the Middle Ages and are still widespread today in and around Provence. There are beautiful seventeenth-century canvases as well as two altarpieces dedicated to the Virgin in the sacristy: one by Miralhet (1429), the other by Bréa (1485). Free entry.

You have to climb a significant number of steps before the stunning panorama over the Baie des Anges comes into view and only then do you reach the museum. Looked at objectively, this naval museum is really rather small, but worth visiting for those who find the world of sailing and ships appealing. You can admire the array of arms and weaponry, engravings and paintings and the fascinating navigational instruments. The extremely minute detail of the model boats is remarkable.

On the edge of the old town, this pretty square was created at the end of the 18th century under the supervision of Antoine Spinelli, who also designed one of the square's most beautiful buildings, the Chapelle du Saint-Sépulcre. In the center of this square stands the statue of Joseph Garibaldi, "Hero of the Two Worlds", built in 1891 by Etex and Gustave Deloye. On the square, you can enjoy a drink or two, or sample the excellent seafood dishes of the famous Grand Café de Turin. Several narrow, winding little streets open out into this square, which appears like an oasis of light from the labyrinth of shady streets and old, leaning buildings. The city's baroque Cathédrale Sainte Réparate has a place of pride here. Adding to the square's authentic character is the gray stonework, complemented by a small, charming fountain made of white stone. It's also here that you can taste the city's best ice cream at Glacier Fenocchio. A rather steep climb up Rue Rossetti will take you directly to the Parc du Château.

Place Saint-François

Place Saint-François is just 50-metres from Place Garibaldi. Although smaller in size and less imposing, this square has just as much to offer architecturally. Take time to admire the beautiful eighteenth-century bell tower, a remnant of the Franciscan monks' presence in Nice - needless to say they named this square after their patron saint, François. Standing opposite is the fine building known as the Palais Communal, built in the 16th century and renovated during the 17th and 18th centuries. In the centre of the square, a pretty fountain has flowed since 1938, courtesy of François Aragon. Called 'The Dolphin Fountain', it reminds us that a fish market is also held in the square.

If you've a passion for architectural curiosities, here's something that will make your day. Just a stone's throw from the main railway station, this strikingly unusual red brick building stands tall. The use of red brick in architecture is extremely rare around Nice, but this rather strange edifice was built at the beginning of the 20th Century - in 1935 to be precise - and is still in use today as a Post Office building.

Nice's much-loved promenade
Promenades des Anglais
Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6000
France
A big favorite with locals and visitors alike, attracting roller-bladers, cyclists and dog owners, this much-loved promenade hugs the seashore for several kilometers. The promenade's characteristic blue chairs, scattered along the way, provide the perfect vantage point from which to take in the expanse of azure blue stretching as far as the eye can see. It took its current form in 1822, when Lewis Way, an Englishman who lived in Nice during the winter months, financed the two-meter wide path. It is free of charge to stroll, bask in the sun, and enjoy the pleasures of Nice's beaches.

This is the most attractive tourist information office in the city, something which its location - on the Promenade des Anglais - guarantees. As a result, you'll have no trouble finding it by just walking along the seafront, lined as it is with prestigious hotels. The offices are quite big and a considerable wealth of documentation (maps, leaflets on places to visit) is at your disposal. What's more, all the information you need is provided in a friendly and professional manner.

Saint Giaume Church

Baroque style
1 Rue de la Poissonnerie
Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6300
France
In sharp contrast to the solemn exterior, the interior of this church is full of cabled columns, polychromatic marbles, gilding and mouldings. Pure baroque! The adjoining chapels are as richly decorated and the most inspiring of these is that dedicated to Saint Rita, the much venerated patron saint of hopeless causes. This saint occupies a very special place in the hearts of the people of Nice since it is their city's patron saint.

St. Etienne Church

Near Avenue Malausséna
32 Rue Vernier
Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6000
France
+33 4 9388 9642
Saint-Etienne's is quite a modern church situated in the new town, just above the railway station, close to both Avenue de la Libération (where a large market is held every day) and Avenue Malausséna. Particularly outstanding are the church's stained-glass windows, which represent a clever interlacing of pretty geometric patterns and floral motifs. Two parallel colonnades form the main body of the interior, resulting in a beautifully harmonious architectural ensemble.

Built by Tsar Nicolas in 1912, this church is a work of art. Representative of the Russian presence in France it is a key tourist attraction today, with its gorgeous wood work and collection of icons. The interiors are ornamental and unique and are a definite must see. This exotic and colorful cathedral is home to many historical and religious objects that were transferred here when Russia was in the throes of civil turmoil. Come and visit or attend the church services held every Sunday.

St. Paul Church

Peace on the outskirts of the city
26 Avenue de Pessicart
Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6100
France
+33 4 9397 2232
Saint-Paul's, situated in the north of the city, is not one of oldest churches in Nice, but it is a wonderfully proportioned building, quite large and very beautiful nonetheless. Graced with archways, the square in front of the church is decorated with mosaics made from pebbles. The building is stone-built and the windows are contemporary in stlye. This is a restful, soothing place that invites you to partake in a little spiritual reflection.

St. Suaire Chapel

Chapel art & architecture near Cours Saleya
8 Rue Jules Gilly
Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6300
France
The Saint-Suaire Chapel - home to the Red Penitent Order - can be found in the old town, close to Cours Saleya. In common with all penitent brotherhoods that formed during the 14th Century, the red penitents are a lay association practising religious devotion as well as offering help to those in need. In addition to the chapel's architecture, art lovers will be able to enjoy some very beautiful paintings inside, particularly the 'Saint-Suaire' (1660), a canvas by Nice artist Baldoino, and Paul Emile Barbéri's 'Saint Trinité'(1840).

Thiers Central Station

19th-century railway station
Avenue Thiers
Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6000
France
If you didn't arrive in Nice by train and you like architecture, then the city's main railway station, known as the Gare Central, is worth paying a visit to. Found at the juncture of Avenue Jean Médecin and Avenue Thiers, it is an imposing building, falling perfectly within the codes of beauty as far as 19th-century stations are concerned, with brickwork, mouldings and vast open spaces. Designed by architect Bouchot, it was built under his supervision in 1865. A really beautiful building that's definitely worth a look.

Avenue Thiers
Avenue de Thiers
Nice 6000
France

There are many positive things about this tourist information office. The opening hours are particularly helpful (especially for early birds!) and it's also worth noting that the office is open on Sundays. Its central location means that it is easily accessible. You'll find it right in the city centre, at the top end of Avenue Jean Médecin (the main shopping thoroughfare). The offices in fact, take up part of the right wing of the railway station building. You'll find a large number of brochures and leaflets at your disposal, and there are four members of staff ready to help you find what you're looking for.

Venet Arc

Gigantic outdoor sculpture
Jardin Albert Ier
Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6000
France
Come and experience modern art outdoors! Close to the famous Place Masséna and set in the beautiful surroundings of the Albert I Garden, towers Bernard Venet's huge arc. It stands over several tens of meters high and seems almost to touch the sky. Despite its gigantic proportions, the structure has an amazing feeling of lightness about it. This contemporary work of art has had no trouble winning the hearts of the people of Nice and has become a modern symbol of the neighborhood.
