The management takes pride in the balanced symbiosis between "man and machine" at the Acropolis; the smooth functioning necessary to host large events combined with the spirit and passion necessary to make them memorable. It is conveniently and centrally located, accessible on foot from most tourist destinations and by public transportation. See website for current programming and rental information. Discover Asian arts & tradition |
405 Promenade des Anglais, Arenas Près de l'aéroport international de Nice Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6200 France +33 4 9229 3700 http://www.arts-asiatiques.com/ |
This museum shows the sheer breadth and diversity of Asian art and culture, with pieces from many different regions. The collection of traditional costumes is outstanding. Just by the Phoenix Park, this museum opened in 1998 and is one of the most beautiful and well-designed in the city. The architect, Kenzo Tangé, has constructed a masterpiece in white marble, resting on round and square bases symbolizing the sky and the earth. The museum stretches out towards a small artificial lake where swans and ducks swim. Review © 2007, Wcities |

An open-air museum for plant life |
78 Corniche Fleurie Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6200 France +33 4 9229 4180 http://www.nice.fr/mairie_nice... |
Nice's botanical garden really couldn't be anywhere else but on the aptly named Corniche-Fleurie, meaning 'Flowered Balcony'. Literally a museum out in the great wide open, spread over three hectares, this garden grows an impressive quantity of different Mediterranean floral species. Remarkably well kept throughout, it's somewhat of a surprise that so few Niçois actually come to visit. A car-park is available. Review © 2007, Wcities |

History of the Franciscan way of life |
Place du Monastère de Cimiez Colline de Cimiez Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côted'Azur 6000 France +33 4 9381 0004 |
Up on the hill in Cimiez, within the 17th-century monastic buildings, you'll find Nice's Franciscan museum, which charts the history of the Franciscan way of life from the 13th century to the present day. Visitors can admire the numerous works of art and various religious documents. In the 15th-17th century church, it is worth taking time look at the work of painter Louis Bréa: his portrayal of a recumbent Christ as well as a large baroque altarpiece in gilded wood. An archaeological museum, the Chagall museum and the Matisse museum are all nearby. Free entry. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Situated on one of the city's most prominent hills, far from the hustle and bustle of the town center, Nice's archaeological museum is renowned for its remarkably well-preserved Roman baths dating back to the 2nd & 3rd centuries C.E. Objects on display, such as vases and jewelery, have either been found during excavations or brought in from other sites. A small boutique offers a range of books on the 'Cemenelum' (Cimiez) site and Nice in general, as well as reproductions of some museum pieces. Free for everyone the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month. Baroque palace in old Nice |
15 Rue Droite Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6300 France +33 4 9362 7240 http://www.nice.fr/mairie_nice... |
This Genoese-style palace was built in the middle of the 17th century for the Lascaris de Vintimille (a small Italian town near Nice); it was their family home until 1802. Tucked away in a narrow street, the richly coloured and decorated façade of this palace is flanked by old red and ochre buildings typical of Nice's old quarter. The interior is in sumptuous baroque style, its vaulted ceilings decorated with frescoes above huge sweeping staircases. There are also 12th century furnishings, Flemish tapestries, and on the ground floor a recreation of an 18th century pharmacy (and the gift shop). Admission is free. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Works by Giacometti, Calder et al., close to Nice |
623 Chemin Gardettes Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6570 France +33 4 9332 8163 http://www.fondation-maeght.com/ |
Art lovers who find themselves on the French Riviera should make sure they pay the Maeght Foundation a visit. The buildings alone are a delight to behold, with a bright, airy spaciousness that's balanced and restful, incorporating terraces, gentle slopes, stonework and terracotta paving, amidst lush Mediterranean vegetation. This is the ideal temple in which to glorify 20th-century art. On display are original and prestigious works of art including Giacometti bronzes (Annette, his walking men) and sculptures and paintings by Joan Miro, Calder and Marcel Duchamp. Several temporary exhibitions are held each year. Always impeccably organized, the themes are wisely chosen and the works on show are often either extremely well known or rarely exhibited pieces, on loan from magnificent private collections. Painter, poet & mystic |
Avenue Docteur-Ménard Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6000 France +33 4 9353 8720 http://www.musee-chagall.fr/ |
Marc Chagall is famous for his works inspired by Jewish folklore, and this museum reveals a deeply mystical poet. Chagall was born in Russia in 1887 and died near Nice at St Paul-de-Vence in 1985. His interpretations of the Bible are presented on vast canvasses, blending candid forms with a poetry of colors. This bright and spacious (900m²) museum shows the works off to their full advantage. At the entrance, a small bookshop stocks a number of publications about Chagall and his art, as well as prints of his work. Admission to the permanent collection EUR6.50 (EUR4.50 for students and each Sunday), free for children and the 1st Sunday of the month. Entrance to temporary expositions is an additional EUR1.20. Matisse: The Man & His Work |

Housed in a magnificent red building, this museum stands on Cimiez hill, close to the city's Arènes (ancient amphitheatre) and the Musée archéologique. Matisse lived in Cimiez from 1917 until his death in 1954. Paintings, drawings and some of his earliest works are on display, along with pieces that reveal his lesser-known talents as a sculptor. Several black and white photographs offer glimpses of the artist's private life. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Stunning collection of 1950s art to present day |
Avenue de Saint Sébastien Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6300 France +33 4 9362 6162 http://www.mamac-nice.org/ |
This museum is not only a bastion for modern art, but an architectural triumph. The Carrara marble towers are linked with glass footbridges; at the top, a terrace/walkway (known as the Jardin d'Eden) gives visitors a bird's-eye view of the city. Works from the 1950s to the present day are featured in the permanent collection, including some fine Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein Pop Art pieces. Temporary exhibitions and the Ecole du Louvre lecture series are held here (November to April), as well as monthly film screenings. There is an excellent museum shop on the ground floor which offers design pieces and books. Admission: EUR4; reduced EUR2.50; free 1st & 3rd Sundays. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Exceptional collections |
60 Boulevard Risso Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côted'Azur 6300 France +33 4 9713 4680 http://www.mhnnice.org |
The natural history museum in Nice was closed for many years and only reopened in December 2002. It has an impresive collection of zoological, geological and botanical specimens from the Mediterranean, including 200,000 fossils, 40,000 shells, and 7,000 birds. The museum has made its permanent collection more interactive, with audio-visual and light-sound effects. Temporary exhibits take place regularly, and real fans will want to request access to the vast museum research library. Guided tours are every Wednesday at 3p. Entry is free. Review © 2007, Wcities |

All honour to the Middle Ages! |
59 Avenue St-Barthélémy Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6100 France +33 4 9713 3415 http://www.nice.fr/mairie_nice... |
Quite a way from the centre of Nice, hidden in a quiet street, the Prieuré du Vieux Logis will not deny you its treasures (provided you make it during the short opening hours). It's well worth the effort in spite of the obstacles, as this former villa houses a magnificent collection of religious art from the Middle Ages. An entire medieval universe re-emerges through an inventory of everyday objects and furniture from the 14th to the 16th century. Take time to linger and admire the 15th-century Flemish Pietà. Free admission. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Maritime marvel |
Place du 8 Mai 1945 Parc du Château Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6300 France +33 4 9380 4761 |
Only the determined get to visit this museum! You have to climb a significant number of steps before the stunning panorama over the Baie des Anges comes into view and only then do you reach the museum. Looked at objectively, this naval museum is really rather small, but worth visiting for those who find the world of sailing and ships appealing. You can admire the array of arms and weaponry, engravings and paintings and the fascinating navigational instruments. The extremely minute detail of the model boats is remarkable. The work of a genius in Antibes |
Place Mariéjol Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur 6600 France +33 4 9290 5420 http://www.antibes-juanlespins... |
The Château Grimaldi buildings are a magnificent sight, with their high, rugged dry-stone walls facing the sea. This fortress shelters some truly captivating works of art; contained within these walls is a great collection of works by Picasso that will make your eyes light up in wonder and delight. You won't find any of Picasso's blue period or Cubist pieces here, rather works radiating an intense and clear light, fruits of the years the artist spent on the Côte d'Azur. The museum also has some very fine paintings by artists who are connected with the region. One not to be missed is Nicolas de Staël's piece, 'Le Piano Rouge'. The museum is currently closed for restoration and will reopen in the beginning of 2008. You can enjoy the entire collection at Palazzo Grassi in Venice, Italy. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Not far from the port, the modern building housing this little museum stands on the very place where the 400,000 year old prehistoric site of Terra Amata was discovered. The exhibition describing prehistoric fauna, flora, climate and tools, is educational and easy to understand. Information is in French and English, and selected exhibits are translated into Italian and German. At the end of the visit, a series of small models recreate the evolution of prehistoric man's environment. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Reconstruction of an Ancient Greek residence |

Villa Grecque Kérylos juts out over the sea and is surrounded by high, rugged cliffs, just a couple of kilometres from Nice. Enjoy an authentic recreation of life as it would have been in Ancient Greece. Although built at the beginning of the 20th century, this building takes you back several thousands of years. The guided tour of the villa is most informative and offers a better understanding of the subtleties of this ancestral architecture. As for the furniture, the richness of some of the materials used is astonishing. Review © 2007, Wcities |
