No trip to Omaha is complete without a visit to the Old Market, the city's most popular leisure-time destination. Several blocks of old brick buildings that once housed bustling produce markets and warehouses now play host to some of the hottest shops, restaurants, bars, art galleries and theaters in the area. Old Market visitors are enchanted by the charming atmosphere; corner musicians are on hand to serenade passersby; portrait artists set up shop under colorful umbrellas; and elaborate horse-drawn carriages complete with top-hat-wearing drivers stand at attention. This is a place to make memories, but don't get the wrong idea—this is not a ritzy, "coat-and-tie required" neighborhood. Sure, you'll see some tuxes and designer gowns roaming the streets, but you'll also meet the jeans-and-T-shirt set in great numbers. You'll find a burger, fries and cold beer joint just a few doors down from some of the most outstanding (and highest priced) restaurants in town. Everyone feels comfortable here, and that's what makes the Old Market so popular. The best way to get around is on foot, so park the car and hit the sidewalk. You could spend just a few hours or an entire day and evening discovering all the Old Market has to offer. Tandem bikes are available to rent for those who are looking for a workout. After dinner, stroll a few blocks north to Gene Leahy Mall, which hooks up to the Heartland of America Park. Feed the ducks and ride the ferry out to view the city's largest and most beautiful fountain.

If you're looking for an afternoon to occupy the kids, go just a few blocks west and sample the latest offering at the Omaha Theater Company for Young People. This internationally renowned children's theater produces outstanding works presented by an extremely talented resident company of actors, directors and designers. The theater is located inside The Rose, an historic vaudeville palace built in 1927. This grand old lady, once in disarray and in danger of demolition, has been completely restored to her former beauty. The interior is absolutely spectacular, so be sure to stop in for a look. After the show, walk a few blocks south and spend the remainder of the afternoon at the Omaha Children's Museum, where displays ranging from Humpty Dumpty's Puzzle Land to the Science of the Wizard of Oz will delight the entire family.

Here is a museum that not only appreciates a child's squeals and laughter, but also encourages them. The Toddler Farm gives children 4 and younger a place of their own, while imagination sets the tone in the creative arts and dress up areas. Young guests will realize the sky's the limit in the hands-on science gallery and television studio. Traveling exhibits make periodic stops.
