If you find yourself in Omaha on a sunny summer day, head to South Omaha. Start your day at the Henry Doorly Zoo, where you'll see animals of every shape and kind, the world's largest man-made tropical rain forest, an aquarium complete with a walk-through underwater tunnel, the second largest free-flight aviary in the world and more. Before heading out, be sure to take in a movie at the Lozier IMAX Theater. Later in the day, head across the street to Rosenblatt Stadium to catch an Omaha Golden Spikes Baseball Club game. Whatever you do, don't forget to stop for an ice cream treat at Zesto's, an Omaha institution.

If you're an outdoors lover, you'll find much to keep you busy at the I-80/Ashland interchange. This mecca of fun and adventure is located just 30 miles southwest of the city, halfway between Omaha and Lincoln. Here you'll find Eugene T. Mahoney State Park, the Strategic Air Command (SAC) Museum, the Lee Simmons Wildlife Safari Park, Quarry Oaks Golf Course and more, all located just minutes from the interstate. These attractions are so large that you will have to use your car to get from one to the other. If this area sounds like fun to you, plan on reserving a room or a cabin at Mahoney State Park and spend a few days enjoying the many activities available here. You'll love it!

Make sure the car windows sparkle before embarking on this drive-through adventure. A road leads visitors through several different lands featuring Sandhill Cranes, antelope, deer and a large buffalo herd. Although on display, most of the animals freely roam this corner of the county. A special section called Wolf Woods does require a short walk. While out of the car, be sure to check out the interactive nature exhibits and gift shop. All facilities are accessible to the physically challenged.

Lozier IMAX Theatre

Movies come to life
3701 South 10th Street
(Henry Doorly Zoo)
Omaha, NE 68107
United States

"Larger than life" takes on a whole new meaning when you are sitting in this theater. The huge screen measures 60 feet tall by 80 feet wide. Combined with 12,000 watts of surround sound, the IMAX seems to put spectators in the middle of the action. Shows vary, so call the box office for titles and times. The theater is located at Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo. Parking can be difficult during the peak summer season. Admission is $6.50 for adults and $4.50 for children.

Of the area's most challenging golf courses, this one offers the best view. Designer John LaFoy took advantage of the natural peaks, dips and lush setting of Nebraska's Platte River Valley. The championship course is diverse, featuring a half-island green on the 17th hole. You do not have to be the best of the best to play here. All skill levels are welcome. Players will appreciate the state-of-the-art practice range.

South Omaha

Omaha
United States
If Omaha has a melting pot of ethnicity and culture, this is it. The city's Polish, Italian, Hispanic and Czech populations have thrived here for generations. The neighborhood was considered its own city until the early 1900s. Many South Omaha residents settled here because of its proximity to the meatpacking plants, the area's main source of business. Most of these plants are long gone, having been replaced by bustling shopping centers and business parks. Some of the city's most popular attractions are located in South Omaha, including Henry Doorly Zoo, Rosenblatt Stadium, Sokol Auditorium and Hitchcock Ice Rink. If Mexican food is what you're looking for, be sure to try the enchiladas at El Alamo. Bellevue, Nebraska's third largest city, is located just south of South Omaha. Originally a riverside fur trading post, Bellevue now boasts a thriving residential community and business district.
