633 Osceola Avenue Orlando, FL 32789 United States +1 407 647 6294 http://www.polasek.org |
This sculpture collection is housed in a Mediterranean-style building that served as home to the renowned Czechoslovakian sculptor from 1949 until his death in 1961. Prior to his Florida retirement, Polasek had served more than 35 years as chair of the Chicago Art Institute's sculpture department. Visitors can stroll through three galleries and a three-acre sculpture garden, gazing on the master's paintings and his classical sculptures. The latter are heroic in style, chiseled with an attention to muscle and sinew reminiscent of Michelangelo's works. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A great preserve |
South of Orlando, at the headwaters of the Everglades Orlando, FL United States +1 407 935 0002 http://nature.org/ |
Two powerful environmental concerns have come together here, with the Nature Conservancy and Walt Disney World joining forces to preserve and protect this 12,000-acre ecosystem. In this region are the headwaters of the Everglades, that "shallow river of grass" so eloquently described by author Marjorie Stoneman Douglas, whose efforts helped save this vast swampland from destruction. Water from this region in the center of Florida flows inexorably south, covering much of the land down the center of the state and into southern Florida before flowing into the sea. At this vast preserve, you can get a look at pristine plant communities, wildlife, and waterways. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This museum is housed in an Orlando mansion, once a private residence, converted in 1998 to show off the work of a single artist, Earl Cunningham (1893-1977). His work is considered "primitive genius." Cunningham, who was a St. Augustine native, attempted to capture the haunting landscapes of the Sunshine State. The Everglades proved a favorite subject. The museum's permanent 50-piece Cunningham collection was a bequest to the City of Orlando by collectors Marilyn and Michael Mennello. In addition to showing Cunningham's work, the museum plans a series of rotating exhibits. Call ahead for admission price and other details. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This glistening structure, highlighted by the dome of the John Young Planetarium, looks like the product of a meeting between Greco-Roman architects and Star Trek engineers. The analogy applies to inside activities as well: the museum strives to teach kids (and adults) about classical science using modern, hands-on, sometimes high-tech activities. With 207,000 square feet, the museum houses 10 themed exhibit halls where patrons can explore the human body, modern technology, the solar system and other topics. Take classes in flying and fighting, then rise to great heights in a World War II aircraft! This is the real thing, not a virtual game, and it's all recorded on film for you viewing pleasure. Located next to the museum, this adventure is designed for pilot wannabes. The instructor sits in back and guides the action with voice instructions and other help, if need be. Water slides and games |
6073 West Irlo Bronson Highway 192 Orlando, FL 34747 United States +1 407 396 2626 / +1 800 527 3092 http://www.watermania-florida.... |
Water Mania is a stripped-down version of its bigger brothers, Wet 'n Wild and Disney's Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon. Fortunately, this smaller approach is reflected in ticket prices, which are USD19.95 for adults and USD16.95 for children 3-9. However, you'll hardly notice the difference once you dive right in and get your feet wet! More than 36 acres of water fun await with wave pools, Tot's Town for the kids and plenty of watery diversions. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Snorkel in a spring |
1800 Wekiwa Circle Orlando, FL 32712 United States +1 407 884 2008 http://www.floridastateparks.o... |
Florida's fresh water comes from underground springs that rush through the state's underlying limestone base, or aquifer. Often, those springs bubble to the surface. You can see how it all works at this 7,000-acre park where the waters are crystal clear and stay at a comfortable 72 degrees all year. At this scenic spot, (the headwaters of the Wekiwa (pronounced wahk-EYE-vah) River), you can hike, camp, fish, go canoeing and, if you're lucky, spot some wildlife. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Wet 'n Wild |
6200 International Drive Orlando, FL 32819 United States +1 407 351 1800 / +1 800 992 9453 (WILD) www.wetnwildorlando.com |
Amusement Business Magazine calls this Wet 'n Wild venue the nation's best-attended water park. With the variety of rides offered, it's no wonder. Adults love thrill rides such as the Blue Niagara Slide, 300 feet of intertwined looping tubes twisting six stories high. Children enjoy milder thrills at the Kids Park section. The whole family can kick back on the Take It Easy offerings, including the mile-long Lazy River for tubing. Pools are heated in the winter. If all this activity leaves you hungry, you can fill up at one of the park's several snack bars. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Has science gone crazy? |
9067 International Drive Pointe Orlando Entertainment Complex Orlando, FL 32819 United States +1 407 351 8800 http://www.wonderworksonline.com/ |
This museum bills itself as the museum "where science has gone crazy." While not as cerebral as some other area attractions, such as the Orlando Science Center, this attraction will amuse both children and adults and they can pick up some quirky scientific information along the way. This bright place offers more than 100 hands-on exhibits, including: the Bridge of Fire walk-through, simulating the power of 250,000 watts of electricity; a Mystery Lab, in which water flows up, against the force of that pesky gravity; and the Earthquake Experience simulation room. Orchids, orchids, orchids |
2501 North Old Lake Wilson Road Orlando, FL 34747 United States +1 407 396 1887 http://www.aworldoforchids.com... |
This 10-acre exhibit is a horticulturalist's paradise. Opened in 1993, it is the brainchild of Kerry and Chris Richards, Miami nursery owners active on the international orchid circuit. The pair wanted to build a world-class exhibit honoring the flower they love, and they have certainly succeeded. Here you'll find a rainforest conservatory boasting huge, flowering plants, waterfalls, and exotic birds and fish. A nature walk takes visitors around ponds and through rainbow-hued orchid gardens. The center also offers an extensive list of plants for sale. Review © 2007, Wcities |
