Euro Star Bistro

Great food, great prices

Run by sisters Jeanne d'Arc and Marie "Mama" Antoinette, (yes, those are their real names) this unassuming Lebanese restaurant on Ottawa's trendy Elgin Street is a must visit for anyone looking for something a little different. The food is excellent and inexpensive, and available 22 hours a day. Favourites include the Shawarma Platter and the Club Sandwich. There are also several vegetarian dishes. What really distinguishes this establishment, however, is the eclectic, late-night clientele - no one is turned away, no matter how "different" they might be.

Hooker's Beavertails

Delicious snack food
Williams & George Streets
Byward Market
Ottawa, ON K1N 5T2
Canada
+1 613 241 1230
Beavertails are scrumptious, deep-fried, flat pastries in the shape of, you guessed it, beaver tails. Pam and Grant Hooker opened their Byward Market flagship stall in 1980 and haven't looked back since. Made with whole-wheat flour and cooked in 100 percent soya oil, plain beavertails are actually a relatively healthy snack. For the more adventurous, toppings include cinnamon and sugar or grated cheese.

Canada

Recline into plush crimson seats at one of a dozen or so hardwood tables at this cozy basement pub; order a single malt scotch or an imported brew and relax. Authors read their works periodically during the week and the famed Sunday brunch was voted "Best Brunch" two years running by readers of Xpress, Ottawa's entertainment newspaper. No wonder, with goodies on the menu like Eggs Ireland (two poached eggs with sautéed spinach and béarnaise sauce on an Irish muffin) and stout French Toast stuffed with bananas. Traditional pub grub, including Shepherd's Pie and burgers are offered, as well as more upscale choices, like Moroccon Stew and grilled salmon.

Dubbed as "World Famous," this Westboro Village culinary landmark is home to the Elvis Presley Sighting Society, a group of die-hard Elvis fans who believe the King is alive and well and living in semi-retirement in Tweed, a small town about 90 minutes west of Ottawa. Not surprisingly, the walls are covered with Elvis memorabilia. The menu contains such mainstay items as pizza and pasta dishes, burgers, sandwiches and chicken. A breakfast special of two eggs, choice of meat, home fries, toast and coffee goes for less than CAD5. A children's menu is also available.
