French baker Jerome Mantel's philosophy is simple: use the finest ingredients and bake fresh every morning. His formula has been a roaring success. Close to the Byward Market, this spacious bakery has a colourful eat-in area at the back, making it a perfect lunch stop. Prices range from CAD6.95-9.95 for such dishes as lemon chicken, braised duck or chickpea crepes. Check out the art on sale at the coffee bar.

Planned by an industrial designer to resemble a sherbet-coloured factory, the bar offers more than two dozen flavours of homemade gelato in cones, cups, frappes and shakes —all are made with fresh fruit and Italian cream. Friendly staff, bright halogen lights and upbeat music make it impossible not to be cheerful here. Patrons can also choose from a variety of specialty coffees, fruit smoothies, biscotti, chocolates and flavoured tartufo. Cash and debit cards only.
